Motsumi embarks on oversight visit to a school project

By REGINALD KANYANE

31 July 2025- The North West MEC for Education has conducted a monitoring visit to the construction site of Batho Batho Primary School in Mareetsane village, near Mahikeng today. In November 2023, Motsumi conducted a site handover for the project and officially transferred responsibilities to Kgosi Motshegare, along with his council and the Mareetsane community to initiate the construction of a school.

She further said this project was scheduled for construction duration of 18 months. Motsumi added that she conducted an onsite assessment to evaluate progress and identify potential challenges encountered during the construction phase as the project is nearing the end.

“I am impressed with the progress registered to date and the quality of work advanced at the site. I am happy to observe that the building of the school is at a highly advanced stage. The quality of work that has been demonstrated by the contractor gives one courage to announce that the contractor has so far done wonderful work.

“I also want to commend the community of Mareetsane for not having disturbed the project through any protest like we sometimes encounter in other communities. The recruitment and sub-constructing process was also reported fair and transparent to the community members who qualified to do some work during the construction process,” she said.

Motsumi said as a result, it is clear that the relationship between Motshegare and all stakeholders was very conducive. She said she is also delighted to observe that most of the sub-contractors for the project were women from the community.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank not only the contractor, but the whole community of Barolong Baga Kgosi Motshegare. The allocated amount of more than R59 million was therefore used profitably to benefit the children of the people of Mareetsane.

“The contractor reported that the community has demonstrated strong support and has been cooperating effectively with the project team. Recent torrential rainfall events resulted in minor delays; however, the project remains ongoing without any human related impediments,” said Motsumi.

She said the current scope of work for the construction project encompasses the erection of a Grade R block comprising three classrooms, a science laboratory facility, an administrative block, four classroom blocks, each containing four classrooms, four Heads of Department (HOD) office spaces, a multipurpose center incorporating a computer laboratory and library, an NSNP kitchen with two dining areas, a water storage tank, pump houses and fire protection infrastructure.

“A total of 82 community members are employed through the project, benefiting directly from its initiatives. The Mareetsane community has expressed strong satisfaction and gratitude towards the North West Department of Education for implementing this project, which is expected to enhance the quality of education within Mareetsane,” said Motsumi.

Growth Hub will unlock fresh economic pathways

By OBAKENG MAJE

31 July 2025- The North West Premier, Lazarus Mokgosi accompanied by the North West MEC for Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), Bitsa Lenkopane and Executive Mayor of Rustenburg, Sheila Huma, launched the North West Growth Hub today at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng.

The Growth Hub, based at Shop No. 17 at OR Tambo International Airport, is a game-changer for local Medium, Small, and Micro Enterprises (MSMEs), providing enhanced visibility in competitive markets, support in accessing digital platforms, and opportunities to collaborate across industries.

Mokgosi further said with a strong focus on showcasing their rich biodiversity, cultural heritage and entrepreneurial spirit, the Growth Hub will unlock fresh economic pathways across agriculture, conservation, manufacturing, and hospitality. He added that this strategic milestone is set to significantly enhance the province’s digital marketing and branding capacity, positioning the North West as a compelling destination for tourism, trade, and investment.

“The North West Growth Hub aims to amplify visibility for the province’s diverse Medium, Small, and Micro Enterprises (MSMEs), promote its rich biodiversity, and unlock growing economic opportunities.

“Through this Growth Hub we aim to amplify the visibility of the province to this lucrative market by exposing it to our rich biodiversity, and unlock growing economic opportunities across various sectors,” said Mokgosi.

He said the Growth Hub programme also aligns with the objectives of the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy, which will be launched in due course. Mokgosi said, however, at the centre of this initiative is to build a digitally enabled, competitive, and inclusive economy, which can help the province address the challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequalities in their communities.

“The Growth Hub is a flagship initiative of the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), aligning with the department’s digital transformation priorities as pronounced by Lenkopane during the 2025 Budget Vote.

“It is a core pillar in the province’s broader strategy to build a digitally enabled, competitive, and inclusive economy. Once fully equipped with modern digital infrastructure, the hub will serve as a sustainable platform for marketing the North West as a premier tourism destination,” he said.

Mokgosi said the hub will also accelerate the development of township economies and promote localisation.

Deputy President, Paul Mashatile to be reprimanded after he failed to disclose a diamond gift

By BAKANG MOKOTO

31 July 2025 – The Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests has resolved that the National Assembly should reprimand the Deputy President, Paul Mashatile and impose a R10 000 fine on him for his failure to declare a gift to his wife in the confidential part of his financial and registrable interests register. The committee, through the Office of the Registrar, received a formal complaint against Mashatile on 5 March 2025, for an alleged breach of the Code of Ethical Conduct and Members’ Interests.

The Co-Chairpersons of the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests, Lusizo Makhubela and Henni Britz said item 13(3)(f) of the code requires Members of Parliament (MPs) to disclose gifts received by their immediate family in the confidential part of the register.

Makhubela said following consideration of the complaint and perusal of the confidential part of Mashatile’s disclosed interests, the committee noted that the gift in question (a diamond from Mr Louis Liebenberg) was not disclosed. Makhubela said while the committee noted the Member’s response, among others, that he was waiting for the appraisal of the diamond to determine its value before a declaration was made and that he has since surrendered the gift to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the committee contended that ethical behaviour required that the gift be declared, with the value disclosed at a later stage.

“The committee found that the Member breached item 13(3)(f) as read with item 16(1)(a)(ii) of the code. As a result, the committee will recommend to the National Assembly to impose a reprimand in the House and a fine of R10 000 for a first offence of a breach of the code.

“The committee remains steadfast in its quest to ensure accountability of all Members of Parliament as demanded by the code. The disclosure process not only facilitates public trust in Parliament but also enhances its credibility,” she said.

Britz shared the same sentiments and said the full committee report will be published on the Announcements, Tablings and Committee Reports.

Government welcomes reduced repo rate

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

31 July 2025- The government has welcomed the decision by the South African Reserve Bank to reduce the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7%. The government said the move provides much-needed relief for South African households, many of whom continue to face financial pressure due to the rising cost of living.

Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) acting spokesperson, Nomonde said rate cut is expected to ease the burden on consumers by lowering the cost of borrowing, while also creating conditions more conducive to stimulating investment, supporting businesses, and driving economic activity. Mnukwa said the decision reaffirms the soundness of South Africa’s monetary policy framework and the importance of coordinated efforts to support inclusive growth.

“Government continues to implement structural reforms and improve the ease of doing business to unlock the full potential of the economy and create jobs,” she said.
