2024 NSC Final Examinations Kick-off To A good Start In North West

By BAKANG MOKOTO

21 October 2024- The North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi said the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) final examinations kicked-off to a good start today. Motsumi said there are no major disruptions recorded across the province.

She visited Tlamelang Special School in Gelukspan and Kgosi Kebalepile Secondary School in Mmabatho, near Mahikeng, to oversee the administration of the first NSC paper. Motsumi further said NSC candidates across the country began their exams today with the morning session dedicated to English Paper III.

“Tlamelang Special School, which caters to learners with special needs, has 13 candidates sitting for the NSC exams at three different centres. These learners are provided with accommodations and concessions, including among others, an additional 20 minutes per hour, as well as a scribe and a reader, depending on the severity of their needs.

“These provisions are in line with the South African Schools Act of 1996, the National Education Policy Act of 1996 and SAIS policy. In 2023, Tlamelang Special School achieved a commendable 77% pass rate, and the department hopes to see similar success this year,” she said.

Motsumi added that, at Kgosi Kebalepile Secondary, 149 candidates across four centres also began their exams without any disruptions. She expressed her satisfaction with the smooth start of the examination process at both schools.

“It is encouraging to see that our learners, especially those with special needs, are receiving the support they need to succeed in their exams.

“We wish them continued success as they progress and we remain committed to ensuring that every learner has a fair and equal opportunity to achieve their academic goals,” said Motsumi.

This afternoon, candidates sit for a three-hour Afrikaans Paper III from 2pm.

Meanwhile, the provincial Convenor of the Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM), Pastor Lesiba Kgwele said: “In appealing for support and no disruption, MRM wished all learners who started with their examinations the very best and urged them to stay focused and not to be distracted from the task at hand.

“We urge communities to allow learners the opportunity to write their final exams in a peaceful and conducive environment. The sacrifices and extra effort they have had to put as part of preparing for the exams throughout the year, must be safeguarded so that they achieve their objective to pursue their dreams.”

21 October 2024– Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements, Nocks Seabi said he has learned with shock of Princess Sbuyiselwe Angela Buthelezi’s sudden death. Seabi said it is with complete shock and disbelief that they learned of Buthelezi’s untimely passing.

“Death has once again robbed South Africa of a devoted public representative, who showed a deep commitment to the delivery of quality human settlements to the people.

“Buthelezi’s passing is more gut-wrenching because the committee just returned from KwaZulu-Natal two weeks ago on an oversight, where she participated comprehensively over long days,” he said.

Seabi further said it was only on Friday that she interacted with all of them on the committee’s WhatsApp Group in preparation for the upcoming meeting. He said Buthelezi’s commitment to serving the people of South Africa was unquestionable.

“She passes on with her boots on. So, on behalf of the committee, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Buthelezi family, Buthelezi’s daughter, and her political home, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

“May they be comforted by the knowledge that Buthelezi was an embodiment of dedication and service,” said Seabi.

Mosenogi embarks on oversight visits to various police stations

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

21 October 2024- As part of the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme-Thuntsha Lerole Reloaded, the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, embarked on an operational and capacity assessment of the Sun City and Mogwase Police Stations in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality.

On behalf of the governance cluster, the North West MEC for Treasury, Kenetswe Mosenogi was joined by the Community Safety and Transport Management Head of Department, Dr Hans Kekana and the Chief Director for District Development Model, Mike Keetile on the oversight visit.

Amongst issues hindering the ability of the Sun City Police Station from optimal service delivery, is the worn out building, which poses health risks to officials and the public. Mosenogi said there is a need to look at alternative measures regarding the occupation of police officials as an interim solution, while processes of relocation are being accelerated.

“The safety of officials and the public is a concern at this point. We believe it is urgent to address issues of the building, which is putting the lives of police members at risk.

“At this point, we need to seek alternative solutions to address the challenge. It would also require the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Public Works and Roads, Provincial Treasury, to come together and see how best we can intervene with a sustainable solution,” she said.

The Mogwase Police Station currently services over 30 surrounding villages. A problematic crime trend for the station is domestic violence, mostly associated with liquor consumption.

Meanwhile, the North West Community Safety and Transport Management, Head of Department, Dr Hans Kekana said there is a need to escalate anti Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) campaigns in the area.

“Recently, we embarked on a crime imbizo in the community of Lerome village, with a stern focus on GBVF. The aim was to raise awareness on the dangers of violence against women, children and the elderly.

“We believe that there is a need to escalate and spread implementation of the campaigns to make a greater impact in the lives of our people,” said Kekana.

Banyana Banyana roar to go ahead of COSAFA Women’s Championship

Picture: Banyana Banyana players

By REGINALD KANYANE

21 October 2024 – COSAFA Banyana Banyana assembled in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape ahead of the start of the regional COSAFA Women’s Championship this week. The tournament gets underway on 22 October 2024. Banyana Banyana interim coach, Maud Khumalo, who is in charge of the youthful South African women’s side said she would have welcomed more time with her players.

Khumalo further said, she has to get on with it and prepare for the opening match against Namibia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and kick-off is at 5pm.

“To be honest with you, we do not have enough time. But there is nothing we can do about it. Remember that most of the players that are here were very active in the league.

“I think maybe that’s another reason they felt they’re still active in the league and they’re still in season,” said Khumalo.

She added that the only thing that is left for them as a technical team is to make sure they find the right combinations and also for the players to understand the mandate. Khumalo said she thinks the players that are here are eager to give their best and also show the fans what they are capable of.

“Namibia are a bit of a closed book as they are yet to submit their final squad list. We have seen some clips of Namibia because I remember we played against them last year in the Under-20s to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers at Sturrock Park.

“The challenge is that they have not finalized their squad yet and they just sent a preliminary squad. We expect a tough game against our neighbours and my charges will have to apply themselves fully if they are to emerge victorious,” said Khumalo.

Meanwhile, the host, South Africa were pitted against Namibia, Eswatini and Seychelles in Group A, while defending champions Malawi will fight it out with Botswana, Madagascar and Mauritius in Group B.

Zambia, Angola and Comoros are in Group C, while Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho complete the line-up in Group D.

North West Premier, Lazarus Mokgosi wishes Grade 12 learners well in their NSC final examinations

By BAKANG MOKOTO

20 October 2034- North West Premier, Lazarus Mokgosi said he would like to take this opportunity to wish the 2024 Grade 12 learners well in their final examinations. Mokgosi said he believes the province will do well given the enormous work that has been carried out to prepare for the examinations.

He further said this includes various intervention measures such as study camps that were initiated to make sure learners do not slack in their school work.

“The Department of Education has been hard at work to prepare learners for these examinations, and I have no doubt that, we will do well as a province.

“We have been on an upward trajectory in the last two academic years after receiving 79.78% and 81.63% in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

“Through the Accelerated Service Delivery Plan dubbed Thuntsha Lerole Reloaded, the government has been able to interact with communities to support School Governing Bodies (SGB), teachers and learners,” he said.

Mokgosi further said through this initiative, they have been able to attend to various challenges confronting the communities. He added that they continue to visit schools and attend to their needs.

“We were one of the first provinces to serve breakfast in our schools as part of the National School Nutrition Programme. All these measures have stabilized our communities and we no longer witness violent service delivery protests that were disrupting learning and teaching.

“Over 45 000 learners in 449 centres across the four districts of the province, will sit down for their examinations starting with English Paper I on 21 October 2024,” said Mokgosi.

He said the provincial government has, through the Department of Education, put various measures in place to deter any incident that might jeopardize the smooth running of examinations.

Meanwhile, the North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi said: “I will oversee the initial seating of examinations at Tlamelang Special School on Monday. We aim to motivate learners to excel in their first examination of the season.”
