Underperforming schools under spotlight as fundamental protocols and strategies were ignored

Monitoring processes at underperforming schools in North West revealed that there were fundamental protocols and educational strategies that were not followed adequately. These startling revelations were exposed during a meeting held at Seasons Conference Centre in Mahikeng on Friday.

North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi convened a meeting with principals and circuit managers from underperforming schools following the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. Motsumi said as a result, the school management teams are now required to account for these deficiencies.

“Schools performing under 70% are subject to monitoring and assistance. Our province ensures that any schools that saw a decline in their average score below 70%, would be subject to appropriate monthly monitoring. With an increase of 1,8%, the province’s national matric results in 2023, placed it in fourth place with 81,6%.

“In this regard, the department works harder to guarantee that it strengthens its position by supporting every school in the province. To guarantee that all schools increase their performance and that no school decreases its performance, it will be necessary to expand the school-based intervention program this time around,” she said.

Motsumi further said this means that schools will receive support based on their unique set of conditions. She added that they have an enormous effort ahead of them and that they will not forsake the people of the province, especially learners.

“The monitoring of these underperforming schools will be conducted monthly to ensure continuous improvement and better year-end results,” said Motsumi.

Meanwhile, the North West Department of Education’s acting Superintendent- General, Maropene Seshibe, emphasized the importance of accountability and support. Seshibe said circuit managers need to account for the level of support they provide to these principals.

“The diagnostic reports will guide us in resolving these issues. Based on these findings, we will develop solutions to enhance overall learner performance. We do this because we are committed to reaching a top 2 position in the forthcoming results announcement.

“Therefore, we are implementing stringent measures to engage with underperforming schools,” she said.

A family friend sentenced to two life terms imprisonment for rape

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

A man (36) was sentenced to two life terms imprisonment by the Galeshewe Regional Court for rape. The accused raped a minor who was 11 years old during the commission of the crime.

On 1 May 2022 and 2 May 2022, the accused who was 34 years of age, raped the victim while residing with the family of his victim. The accused was a family friend of the victim and had known the family for years making him a part of the family.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the accused, who the family trusted as he had helped raise the children, shared the sleeping with the children in the same room, where he slept on the floor because of the limited space in the house.

Senokoatsane further said the family of the victim trusted the accused so much and felt sorry for him. He added that he shared a room with the victim and her other three siblings.

“While being accommodated by the family, the accused took advantage of the situation and began to rape the victim on 1 May 2022. Both rape incidents happened at the victim’s parental home, while the rest of the family was sleeping in the same house.

“The victim informed her mother and her stepfather about what the accused had done to her. The matter was reported to the police and the accused was arrested. The victim was taken for medical examination, which proved that she had injuries and the DNA was also taken to bolster the state’s case,” said Senokoatsane.

He said the accused was remanded in custody until the conclusion of the matter. Senokoatsane said during the trial, the victim testified via intermediary services and comprehensively accounted for how the rape had affected her life.

“The victim and her mother through a Victim Impact Statement, compiled with the assistance of the Court Prep Officer, Thandi Kraai, detailed how the family had considered the accused as a fatherly figure and how he had betrayed their hospitality and trust by assaulting the victim. When presenting his testimony in court during the trial, the accused denied ever sexually assaulting the child.

“The forensic analyst was also called to testify by the state. The state prosecutor, Advocate Shareen Theresa argued that the evidence against the accused was overwhelming and that the victim was a very good witness even though she was a minor and a single witness, hence the cautionary rule according to law is applicable,” he said.

Senokoatsane said the prosecution further argued that the court should sentence the accused to life sentence on both counts, as he had shown no remorse and that a clear message had to be sent to other perpetrators of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). He said the accused was declared not to possess a firearm according to Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act.

“The court also made an order for the accused’s name to be entered into the National Register of Sexual Offenders. The NPA envisages that these sentences will provide some justice and closure to the victims and their families.

“They will also endure that violent criminals are removed from our streets,” said Senokoatsane.

Bafana’s AFCON qualifiers opponents confirmed

Picture: The AFCON trophy

By REGINALD KANYANE

Africa Cup of Nations bronze medalists, Bafana Bafana now know the identity of the teams they will face during the qualifiers for the 2025 edition of the continental tournament after the draw was held in Johannesburg on Thursday afternoon. Coach Hugo Broos’ charges were drawn in Group K and they will face Uganda, Congo and South Sudan in the race to qualify for the 35th edition of the biennial continental tournament.

South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan, Vice Presidents Anastasia Tsichlas and Linda Zwane, and CEO Lydia Monyepao, attended the event in Randburg on Thursday.

“This draw is different from previous draws. You find that the teams are spread, and more groups are created and therefore more teams will participate and more teams will have the opportunity.

“I think there are going to be quite some interesting results. We must not just look at the teams, there are going to be quite some interesting results. For ourselves, I think we must just focus and win the games at home and make sure that we go back,” said Jordaan.

He further said it is important that they build consistency of performance in Bafana Bafana. Jordaan added that it is very important that they look forward to this campaign and hope that Bafana Bafana will qualify.

The two top finishers will qualify for the tournament to be hosted in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
