Over 1200 suspects arrested for various crimes during Operation Shanela

More than 1200 suspects were arrested for various crimes during Operation Shanela. They were arrested for crimes, including amongst others, 12 for dealing in drugs, 7 for murder, four for attempted murder, 97 for assault with the intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and 62 for common assault. 

The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said 17 suspects were arrested for drunk driving, 19 for burglary, 104 for illegal dealing in liquor, 143 for possession of drugs and 200 for possession of counterfeit goods. 

“The Operation Shanela is set to prevent and combat crime. It has proved to be successful after the first year in operation in the province. The arrest included 23 undocumented persons and 304 wanted persons.

“The arrests were effected through execution of several actions, which included stop and searches, patrols, road blocks, vehicle check points, visiting and inspecting of licensed liquor premises, Second-hand goods dealers, tracing of wanted suspects and many others,” she said.   

Myburgh further said during the operations, police confiscated liquor, vehicles, a rifle, cellular phones, tobacco products, copper cables and a variety of drugs. She added that all the arrested suspects are expected to make their court appearances in different courts this week.
