The hospital gets medical equipment as donation

Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, donated medical equipment to the oncology department at Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberly on 12 March 2024. Otola who was accompanied by the acting Northern Cape Deputy Police Commissioner for Corporate Services, Major General Thabo Mphuthi, said they donated medical equipment, care packs and reading material to patients. 

“The donations are proceeds from the SAPS 10km Pink and Blue Walk in aid of cancer awareness that was held in Kimberly on 8 November 2023. The walk was hosted in conjunction with the SAPS Women’s Network, Men for Change, the Department of Health. 

“This includes the Community Policing Forum (CPF), the Department of Transport Safety and Liaison, Department of Correctional Services, the SOUTH African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the Provincial SAPS Management, Provincial Components and Stations within the greater Kimberley area,” she said.

Otola further said the purpose of the day was relayed by Mphuthi, who expressed her utmost gratitude to all the role players. She added that the hospital needs to be commended for the sterling job it is doing by serving the community with excellent medical care.

Meanwhile, the acting CEO of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital, Dr Esme Olivier lauded the police and other relevant stakeholders for their generosity.

The bridge construction project aims at improving responsiveness to emergency situations in rural communities

North West MEC for Public Works and Roads, Gaoage Molapisi conducted an oversight at the construction of the bridge at Montshioa Stad on Tuesday. Molapisi was accompanied by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) representative, Major Aaron Nguqu and Chief Director responsible for Infrastructure Coordination, Implementation and Maintenance , Sifiso Diko.

He further said the bridge is part of the Welisizwe Bridge programme designed to address the existing backlog of bridge infrastructure. Molapisi added that the programme further aimed at improving responsiveness to emergency situations in rural and disadvantaged communities.

“The programme is a collaborative effort between the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and National Department of Transport. Welisizwe Bridges will improve communities’ access to heathcare facililties, schools and economic amenities.

“The programme also seeks to create labour intensive working opportunities through the Expanded Public Works and Roads (EPWP). The project was among the 12 earmarked projects in the province as announced by president Cyril Ramaphosa during the 2023 State of the Nation Address (SONA),” he said.

He said the expeditious completion of the Welisizwe Bridges will go a long way to mitigate challenges caused by heavy rains and floods in the communities as experienced in the past.

IEC official fired over leaked ANC candidate lists

The African National Congress (ANC) has commended the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) for its speedy investigation into the unauthorised sharing of the ruling party’s candidate list. This comes after alleged that, the IEC has fired its official who leaked the ANC and MKP candidate lists to the media.

Last week, the ANC’s candidate list was leaked to the media and that raised eyebrows. Many people questioned IEC’s credibility on how it handles information with individuals’ personal information in potential contravention of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). 

The ANC national spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said, the ruling party has successfully submitted its National and Provincial candidate lists for the 2024 National and Provincial Elections via the IEC online candidate nomination system (OCNS) on 8 March 2024, as stipulated in the Electoral Timetable.

“We welcome the great public interest in the ANC’s collective of candidates, who represent the mosaic of South African diversity. However, we have noted with concern that ANC candidate lists that appear to emanate from the IEC online candidate nomination system were circulated on social media. 

“But, we are pleased to learn that this was not a result of a security breach, but rather the neglectful conduct of an individual. The conduct of the implicated official has jeopardized the personal details of all the individuals on our candidate list,” she said.

Bhengu-Motsiri urged all the appropriate authorities to swiftly address this matter. She further said they reiterate their full confidence in the IEC to deliver yet another free, fair election. She added that, they are still confident in the IEC’s proven track record of administering and overseeing free, fair, and credible elections over the past three decades.

“The IEC continues to do so with professionalism, impartiality and integrity, attributes, which have also extended to the secure management of confidential information,” said Bhengu-Motsiri.

Broos names final squad against Algeria

Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos has named his final 23-member squad for the FIFA Series international friendlies pilot project in Algeria later this month. The FIFA event will run from 18 to 26 March 2024 and Broos said, it is a great opportunity to call some new players to the South African senior men’s team. 

He further said certainly, he is also looking to the future. Broos added that already, there are a few players in the group who will be 35, 34, 36 when the FIFA World Cup is jointly hosted in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America in 2026. 

“So yes, we have to look for replacements also. Firstly, we have to see those games as an opportunity to give new players, younger players, to show if they are at Bafana Bafana level. 

“Secondly, we are playing against two different styles of opponents. On one side, you have Andorra and you can compare them to Namibia. So, a tough team, a team who will wait and try to be dangerous in transition,” he said.

Broos said, on the other side, you have Algeria, which is ranked 5th in the CAF rankings. He said, so that means you have two different styles, and it is good for the South African senior men’s team, certainly also to play against Andorra, but certainly to play against such a good team like Algeria.

“They have a new coach and will have new players also in their selection. So, it will be a good test for those new players who are with us to prove themselves. Therefore, those friendly games are important, and you have to get the results if you want to keep your 10th place or maybe progress even further in the CAF ranking.

“We will play the first match against Andorra at the 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba, Algeria, on 21 March 2024. We then face the hosts at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers on 26 March 2024 before returning home on the following day,” said Broos.

Counterfeit cigarettes worth R1 million confiscated

The police have confiscated counterfeit cigarettes worth R1 million. This comes after the Springbok K9 unit, Public Order Police, SAPS Border Police, Department of Home Affairs and SARS Customs, pounced on several Bangladesh shop owners in Springbok on 8 March 2024.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Col Sergio Kock said, the police received a tip-off regarding alleged counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco products in five shops in Bergsig, Carolusberg and Okiep in Springbok.

“The police confiscated 217 cartons of cigarettes and a large amount of Afzal tobacco with an estimated street value of R1 million. The owners were served with seven day notice to provide the original documentation of the purchasing of these goods,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, lauded the police for the unabated disruptive actions and reiterated that the police and all relevant role players, remain relentless in the efforts to uproot the illicit trade in counterfeit goods, as it has a detrimental impact on the economy of the country.

Parents embarked on protest after a Grade 6 learner allegedly gang-raped

North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi said she is appealing to the community of Mmabatho, near Mahikeng to exercise patience and calmness in the arrest of the four learners allegedly accused of raping a school learner from Thuto Botshelo Primary School.

Motsumi said on 7 March 2024, four learners from Kebonang Secondary School, allegedly raped a Grade 6 learner (14) from Thuto Botshelo Primary School within the school premises. She further said, after the incident, the community in the area were up in arms demanding the immediate arrest of the alleged perpetrators. 

“They burnt tyres and blocked the roads leading to the school with stones and trees. We plead with the communities to exercise patience on the arrest of the suspects.

“On behalf of the two schools affected by this incident, I would like to plead with our communities to allow the law to take its full cause. The police should be given space to conduct their investigations without any external interference,” said Motsumi.

She added that all of them, together with the family of the victim, want to see justice served. Motsumi said as the department, they are complying with the South African Police Services (SAPS). 

“Any disruption of learning and teaching will have a long effect on the year-end results. Therefore, let’s allow learners to study in peace. We continue to call for psychological support for both teachers and learners following the intimidating scenes taking place around the two schools.
