JOHANNESBURG – The Hawks investigating unit has arrested a bank employee for stealing nearly R2 million from his employer near Groblersdal in Limpopo.
The 30-year-old, who is responsible for loading money into ATMs, was arrested in a joint operation with local police today.
He is said to have been loading half of the intended amount, while replacing the rest with fake bank notes.

Cape Town – Sixteen years after the horrific gang-rape and brutal assault of her only daughter, Sylvia Farmer still clearly remembers the gruesome sight of Valencia sitting naked and bleeding on a pavement in Eucalyptus Street, Eerste River.
“I have been trying to forget seeing my child sitting in a tiny ball, so small and frail,” she said.
“But I can’t. It’s a picture that will stay with me forever.”
And while the arrest this past weekend of another suspect for the 1999 gang-rape and murder of the 14-year-old is reopening old wounds, a part of her is content.
“The wheels of justice are turning. This is good. Everyone who did this to my child must pay.”

Johannesburg – Sindisiwe Manqele, the girlfriend accused of killing hip hop star Nkululeko “Flabba” Habedi, denied in court that the couple often argued over his ex-girlfriend.
In fact, she told the High Court sitting in Randburg on Tuesday, she did not even have any knowledge of an ex-girlfriend, known as “Kea”.
Several state witnesses have testified that Flabba was stabbed to death after the pair argued over Kea.

VRYBURG- NALEDI municipality mayor Langa Modise could face an investigation after he was involved in a car accident that left him hospitalised at the weekend.
Allegations are that Modise was being driven by someone who was not an employee of the municipality at the time of the accident.
He was using a municipal pool vehicle.
He suffered minor injuries and had a few stitches before he was released yesterday morning. Speaking to the The New Age, Modise said: “I can confirm that the person who was driving the car was one of the security guards who works for Naledi Crime Patrollers.”

A TSWANA novel, Ga Ke Modisa (I Am Not Your Brother’s Keeper), written by Taung-born author, Sabatha Mpho Mokae has been prescribed for first-year Tswana students at the North West university from next year.
Tswana lecturer, Pappie Mashike said they had decided on using Mokae’s novel because it is current.
“It is a youth novel which deals with white-collar crime. We are indeed faced with certain government official being involved in fraud and corruption.
“The book is relevant to the situation we are living in. The students will associate with the life lived by characters in the book,”
“For the past 10 years our literature has not been growing. It has been too white, with most of our black authors resorting to writing in English. We have since 2001 managed to get three Tswana novels published, including Ga Ke Modisa,”
The book won M-Net Literary Award for best novel in Tswana as well as the M-Net Film Award in 2013.

Since its inception in the Bokone Bophirima Province in 2007, the Abattoir Hygienic Rating Scheme has grown in leaps and bounds and has proven to be a success for the Department of Rural, Environment and Agriculture Development (READ) in improving compliance of abattoirs to meat safety standards.
The scheme stood out during the routine assessment carried out by the Veterinary Services Unit in ensuring that it comply with the requirements as set out in the Meat Safety Act. Its regulations were awarded by the department for their sterling efforts in a glittering ceremony held at the Christiana Hotel on Friday night.
The departmental spokesperson, Thandiwe Moripe-Thabethe said these annual awards were targeted at standardizing and promoting compliance with the Meat Safety Act and its regulations. She said in doing so, all abattoirs were inspected at prescribed intervals by the department’s Veterinary Public Health officers using the Hygiene Assessment System (HAS).
“The Meat Safety Act also provides for measures in promoting meat safety, the safety of animal products and help in establishing and maintaining essential national standards in respect of abattoirs. The basis of this legislation is to ensure that abattoirs are fit to slaughter animals including poultry and that the processes meet the minimum requirements, therefore certify that the meat products are safe for human consumption,” she said.
The winners, who according to the assessment system are in compliance with the prescripts of the Meat Safety Act 40 of 2000, were announced during the award ceremony.
Tigane Supreme Poultry scooped the first position for the Poultry category, and was followed by Rainbow Chicken and Fouries Poultry Plant as position 2 and 3 title-holders respectively.
The Meat category was won by Doornplaat Abattoir with Rustenburg and Zeerust Abattoirs coming second and third respectively.
Kareespruit Abattoir and Ducko Processing went home with the low through put section accolades of Red Meat and Poultry whereas the recently introduced category of MEC Special Award which caters for Rural Abattoirs, was won by Orama Abattoir.
Congratulating the winners and all abattoirs that participated in the scheme, the Mayor for the Lekwa Taemane local municipality, Kagiso Palagangwe on behalf of the MEC for the Department of Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development Manketsi Tlhape, said the recognition bestowed upon these abattoirs confirmed that the meat and meat products from these abattoirs were of high quality and that the hygiene standard was not being compromised.
“We are hopeful that the standard set by the Hygiene Assessment System is a noble cause of promoting good health of our communities. We will be sustained as the department has invested extensively towards the implementation of agro processing projects in the rural areas of the province which I hope will go a long way in fostering economic development in Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies.”, he said.
Palagangwe said some food borne disease remained one of the public health concerns hence registered abattoirs as part of the meat processing process and a significant contributor to the food value chain were highly monitored for compliance.
The department said the AHRS scheme has over the years promoted better cooperation between the department and the industry and would therefore express the importance of the scheme in committing to extended stability within the province since Bokone Bophirima is one of the pioneers after Gauteng in implementing the project.

NORTH West police are looking for a 55 year-old man who went missing. According to police spokesperson, sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said, Ronnie Jan Rickets who resided at Reagile village in Koster went missing on August 22 this year.
“Anyone who could help the police with information could please call investigating officer, Constable P.O Morolodi at Koster police station on 014 543-8600. The missing person was last seen at Mozambique boarder,” Moleko said.

A 34 year-old man was arrested after he allegedly killed his girlfriend on Gedehoop farm near Stella on Sunday. North West police said the suspect forcefully took his girlfriend from Edenhof farm to Piet Plessis village.
The couple was both employed on the farm to Piet Plessis village.
“On their way the suspect allegedly started to assault the girlfriend. The family alerted the police after they looked for the victim, but with no avails. The deceased half-naked body was found in the bushes with multiple injuries sustained due to severe beating,” Molale said.
The suspect was arrested and will appear before the Ganyesa Magistrates’ Court soon for murder.
