SPRINGBOKS PLUNGE TO SIXTH IN RUGBY WORLD RANKINGS

JOHANNESBURG – To add insult to injury, South Africa has dropped drastically in the latest World Rugby rankings, this following heir shocking loss to Japan in their opening game of the Rugby World Cupon Saturday.

The Springboks  went into the tournament as the third best team in the world behind defending World Champions New Zealand and Australia, but wins for World Cup hosts England, Wales and Ireland have seen the three nations leapfrog ahead of Heyneker Meyer’s men.

GUGULETHU SERIAL RAPIST CASE REMANDED TO NOVEMBER

CAPE TOWN – The case against an alleged Gugulethu serial rapist has been remanded to November.

Siyamcela Ntombeni  is accused of raping at least three women along Voortrekker Road.

Police arrested the man last week.

He’ made a brief appearance in the Belville Magistrates Court today.

Ntombeni is charged with three counts of rape and three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

It’s believed he lured female victims on Voortrekker Road by offering them jobs.

BASIC EDUCATION: TEACHERS MUST PREPARE TO ADMINISTER ANA EXAMS

PRETORIA – The Basic Education Department has told teachers to prepare to administer the Annual National Assessment (ANA) exams despite an announcement by five unions that they will not participate in the process.

Sadtu, Naptosa and three other unions earlier today said that in its current form, the assessment is of no value, and it will only administer the exams after a diagnostic tool is remodeled.

ANC still wants fewer provinces

Johannesburg – The ANC is still looking at reducing the number of provinces, legislature and governance committee chairperson Nomaindia Mfeketo said on Monday.

“That policy is at the bottom of trying to find an effective way of making sure that the state is efficient and responsive and much closer to the citizens,” she told reporters in Johannesburg during a discussion on the National General Council documents.

Zim govt property in Cape Town sold for R3.7m

Cape Town – A property in Cape Town that belonged to the Zimbabwean government was auctioned off for R3.76 million on Monday to cover a legal costs order it owed AfriForum over that country’s land reform programme.

“This was the first time in history that a decision of a human rights tribunal in Africa led to the sale of a property of the country that has been guilty of human rights abuses,” The South African lobby group said.

Abuse of dual citizenship an issue – Bapela

Johannesburg – South Africans who use their dual citizenship to join the army in other countries are abusing the system, the ANC’s international relations subcommittee chairperson Obed Bapela said on Monday.

“We have 4 000 British who are in the Royal services of the UK… and rightfully so because they are also citizens of Europe,” he told reporters in Johannesburg at an engagement on the party’s National General Council documents.

Old wounds opened for family of murdered Valencia Farmer

Cape Town – Valencia Farmer’s mother, Sylvia, says the arrest of another person in the horrific murder of her daughter has opened old wounds.

Farmer, a single mother, was speaking as Elmario Maasdorp appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Monday for his alleged role in the 1999 crime.

Farmer was surrounded by women from the community and children’s rights organisations.

Maasdorp, dressed in a green fleece jacket, appeared briefly in court. He wrung his hands as he appeared on charges of murder and rape.

Firefighters ran out of water while battling a fire that gutted 20 upmarket homes on the Vaal River at the weekend, a resident told News24

Eighteen homes were completely destroyed, while two were partially destroyed in Sunday’s blaze.

Protestors started making their way to Grand West Casino on Monday ahead of US Grammy-winner Pharrell Williams’s concert.

Activist movement, Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions SA (BDS) is leading the protest where they say they are expecting 40 000 protestors.They are protesting Williams’s concert because he has partnered with retail chain Woolworths in a campaign.

“The boycott is not a malicious boycott or punitive. It’s simply aimed at how we can get Israel to end its occupation according to international law,” BDS’s Muhammad Desai told News24.

“Woolworths is a company that has in the past supported human rights and good human values. We believe that’s wonderful, and they have a good business journey,” he said.

Eddie Jones named new Stormers coach

Cape Town – Decorated international rugby coach, Eddie Jones, will take over the role as head coach of the Stormers at the start of the 2016 Super Rugby season.

The former Wallabies head coach and 2007 World Cup-winning Springbok technical advisor will assume the Stormers coaching reins from Allister Coetzee, who moved to Japan after the Stormers’ SA Conference-winning 2015 Super Rugby campaign.

“Our Director of Rugby, Gert Smal, always promised that he would deliver the best and in Eddie Jones I am more than satisfied that we have appointed the best coach to take over the reins of the Stormers,” said WPRFU President, Thelo Wakefield.

“Eddie is no stranger to South African rugby and we look forward to making him feel welcome and ensuring that he brings more silverware to Newlands.”

Having guided the Brumbies to Super Rugby success back in 2001, Jones coached the Wallabies between 2001 and 2005 – delivering Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup success, as well as taking them to the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final on home soil.
