‘You cannot eat our food…..you owe us, Jan Kempdorp pupils told’

BY KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

THE department of education in Northern Cape said the reports that suggested that they denied the pupils food at Landbou Agricultural High School in Jan Kempdorp, were untrue.

According to reports, some of the parents said the school refused to give food to the pupils who reside at the school dormitory and have the outstanding balance.

The departmental spokesperson, Ohentse Stander said that learners were accommodated on the basis that their parents or guardians will keep up with the fees. “The parents agreed to pay hostel fees to cover all dwelling costs incurred by the school. Currently the school has 99 learners who are boarders,” Stander said.

He said 60 of those pupils were still in the hostel because their parents and guardians responded positively to the request by the school to pay outstanding hostel fees.

“The school manager and SGB met with the parents/guardians who could not pay and they decided to remove their kids from school hostels. We have no record or whatsoever of learners being denied food at the hostel,” he said.

Stander said that the School Governing Body (SGB) reached that decision after no payments were made by parents over a period of time.

Landbou Hoerskool made headlines this year after white pupils allegedly sexually assaulted a black pupil with a broom.

Family finds wrong corpse in casket

352158587

Kimberley – A grieving Platfontein family were shocked to be presented with the wrong body in a casket, instead of that of their 34-year-old son.

Bereaved family members and mourners were gathered at home and were awaiting the arrival of the deceased from about 7am so that he could be buried on Friday.

By noon they indicated that they had not seen sight of their dead relative.

José Cambinda, the father of the deceased, said that the funeral undertakers transported the body in a ordinary vehicle and not a hearse.

“They showed us the body outside the house to confirm identification, but instead of my eldest son, Joseph Cambinda, there was a woman inside the coffin. The family is very upset and hurt about the mix-up.”

Kimberley – A man’s desperate search for diamonds on Sunday afternoon ended in a rescue from Kimberley’s Big Hole after he was spotted on the edge of the water at the bottom of the famous tourist attraction.

The 29-year-old man gained entrance to the hole after climbing over the fence in North Circular Road. De Beers is currently putting up a new fence around the perimeter of the hole and it is believed that the man got in at a section of the old fence.

“The man told us that he was looking for diamonds that he could sell. We found him on the edge of the water . . . and he was walking towards it. We shouted at him to stop because he was very close to the water and we were afraid that he might fall in.”

Middle-class must pay extra for water

953563308

Middle-class people and the rich should pay more for water.

This is according to University of Johannesburg academic Mary Galvin, who was speaking at the start of the World Social Science Forum in Durban on Sunday.

Galvin said if the middle class used water more than reasonably, they would have to pay extra for it.

She said this could help curb water usage. However, she was doubtful rich people would change their habits because they could afford increases.

In her talk, “Of Water and Stones: Citizens’ Attempts to Access Water in South Africa’s Liberal Democracy”, she said this was one of the solutions on the table to try to deal with the drought gripping the province.
