A 44 year-old man was arrested for stealing batteries from a cellphone signal tower near N12 in Kimberely. The police members reacted promptly to a call regarding a possible house breaking on Koppie Enkel, on N12 just outside Kimberley.
Northern Cape police spokesperson, lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana said the police spotted a red double cab Toyota bakkie at the scene.
“The bakkie sped-off from the scene when they noticed the police were on their trail. A high speed chase ensued between the police and the suspects.Two of the suspects fled the scene on foot and one suspect was arrested.
“During investigation, 11 cellphone signal tower batteries were found loaded in the back of the bakkie’s loading bin and 13 batteries on the back seat. The value of batteries recovered is estimated to R1 million,” he said.
The suspect appeared before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of suspected stolen goods.
