Department to provide emergency housing to the Bona-Bona impoverished family

Bona Bona Village – The Bokone Bophirima Department of Local Government and Human Settlements is to provide emergency housing to the impoverished families of Bona-Bona village near Morokweng in Kagisano-Molopo municipality.

This follows the discovery of the Kesentseng family which lives in dilapidated shack by departmental officials during the Setsokotsane Programme at Bona-Bona village in Kagisano Molopo Municipality recently.

85 year old Masa Puleng Kesengtseng is staying with her six (6) grandchildren in a shack erected with sticks after their mud house was reduced to rubble following the floods in the area last year.

Currently any harsh weather condition can bring down the shack which is at the verge of collapse and is posing a serious risk to the lifes of the children.

MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements Collen Maine said: “It is unacceptable that there are still families that are living under such horrendous conditions during this day and age. This case is extreme and the family needs our intervention fast. The family will be prioritised to top the list of the emergency housing and they would have long occupied their new house by Christmas holidays” said MEC Maine.

The Setsokotsane, which has shifted focus to remote rural areas, is a provincial government service delivery programme which is spearheaded by Premier of Bokone Bophirima, Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo.

The programme seeks to put into practice integrated planning of service delivery programmes and activities, whilst also giving government the platform to engage with local communities and solve their problems on the spot.

The Setsokotsane programme will continue through July in the Naledi, Greater Taung and Mamusa local municipalities before moving to other districts in the province.

MEC MAINE RECEIVES MADIBENG PROTEST MARCH MEMORANDUM

Brits – Officials from the Department of Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirima will as from today, move into Madibeng local municipality to conduct an audit on RDP beneficiary lists.

Yesterday, MEC Collen Maine’s decision to commission such as audit follows a peaceful service delivery march by the residents of Madibeng in which they complained that some of the RDP houses are occupied by unlawful beneficiaries.

MEC Maine said the audit should identify the rightful beneficiaries of these houses to root out any biased allocation including dealing with beneficiaries who have opted to rent out their houses as tuck shops or for any other purposes.

“It is only then that we would be able to decide on corrective measures which will ensure that we only have rightful owners in these houses”, he said.

MEC Maine also issued a stern warning against councillors who allocate RDP houses to their friends and relatives who are not necessarily on the beneficiary lists.

MEC Maine said all allegations of fraud, corruption, nepotism that the residents levelled against the municipality, will be thoroughly investigated.

He appealed to members of the community to come forward with information that would assist the investigations.

He said the water and sanitation intervention team that has was dispatched to camp in Madibeng since March this year, will continue to do the work at least until the water supply challenge, has been resolved.

“As the provincial government, we are aware that there is an elite group of people who want to control the resources of Madibeng to the detriment of the residents and we will not allow that to happen. Madibeng is not a playground”, he quipped.

As of March this year, the water and sanitation function is now performed by the Department of Local Government and Human Settlements and the Department of Water and Sanitation, whilst Magalies Water was appointed as an implementing agent to ensure the provision of water and sanitation to the community of Madibeng.

collen-maine.jpg
Coligny – Bokone Bophirima MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements has promised the formulation of a strategy that will assist in avoiding illegal occupation of completed low cost houses by wrongful people.

This comes at time when another illegal occupation was recorded at Coligny under Ditsobotla municipality in the newly built low cost houses.

MEC Collen Maine who was accompanied by MEC for Public Safety and Transport Management Gaoagwe Oageng Molapisi met with leaders of local residents at Ditsobotla municipal office recently to get to the bottom of the allegations.

Residents in the area took to the streets in the protest action alleging that there are people in the area who have illegally occupied the low cost houses.

MEC Maine ordered the investigation and the decisive conclusion to the illegal occupation concerns. He also appealed to those with the evidence to come forward.

“A permanent solution to avoid illegal occupation of the completed low cost houses in the province must be formulated. We are not going to allow any illegal occupation and the sporadic cases that erupt in different municipalities must be stopped. Beneficiaries are not going to be denied the opportunity to occupy their houses. We are going to do door to door and compare lists and those who have occupied the houses illegally will be removed” said MEC Maine.

Residents also wanted clarity from the department with regard to the 107 hectares of land which was purchased through Housing Development Agency (HDA) and got transferred to the municipality.

The land was purchased by the department on behalf of the municipality and it is expected to yield more than 1500 housing units in the area after professional work has been done which include feasibility studies.

Vuyisile Mokoma speaking on behalf of the community said ” We remain satisfied in the manner in which department has responded to our issues, this laid to rest lot of speculation which had misled us for quite some time; we are prepared to work with government to ensure that what we had agreed upon it got implemented expeditiously’’.

In his response MEC Collen Maine said, “The land was purchased for you the residents of Coligny for the housing project and it does not belong to anyone in the municipality or any political leader. The project is meant to alleviate your housing needs and it was not bought through any questionable means” said Maine.
