DA- North West Government fails disabled athletes

BY OBAKENG MAJE
Mahikeng- The Democratic Alliance said they will ensure that the North West Provincial Government honours their responsibility to eight disabled athletes who were chosen to participate at the World Summer Games in Los Angeles from 20 July to 5 August 2015.

The DA MPL Portfolio: Education, Sports, Arts, Culture and Traditional Affairs, Dr Tutu Faleni said his party has learned with shock that the North West Government has not given any recognition to these athletes who will join 62 other athletes (from the remaining eight provinces in South Africa) for this prestigious international event.

“Special Olympics South Africa (SOSA) in North West, has also gone to great lengths to try and get financial assistance in order to ensure their participation in the event.

“SOSA is worried, because to date, all correspondence to the NWPG by SOSA (North West) were ignored. According to SOSA (North West) all the other provinces support their athletes in this venture,” Faleni said.

He said if the situation is not dealt with immediately, these eight athletes will have to withdraw from the event.

After SOSA’s plea to the Democratic Alliance for help, the DA said they will bring an urgent motion in the Legislature in order to help these athletes to participate on international level.

“The DA encourages and want to promote participation (to the fullest extent possible) of persons with disabilities in sporting activities at all levels.

“It is sad that this is a trend in the NWPG not to support athletes in their quest to success. However if athletes perform well, they only then get involved in the athletes life and claim the victory for themselves. They then use expensive showcase events to honour the athlete, but were never a crucial part of the athlete’s journey,” he said.
Our quest to get respond from department of Sport and Education in the province proved futile before publishing the story, however follow up will be done.

Despite the challenges, we have to go and play – Mashaba

Johannesburg- After three cancelled training sessions due to player unavailability, Bafana Bafana finally held their one and only training session ahead of the first leg 2016 CHAN qualifier against Mauritius which will take place on Saturday, 20 June 2015 at the Dobsonville Stadium.

Kick-off is at 15h00.

Bafana Bafana was this week rocked by player withdrawals with 12 of them leaving camp after Supersport United, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits and Ajax Cape recalled their players from the national team camp – only 10 remained in camp leading to cancelled training sessions.

Head coach Ephraim Mashaba went looking for replacements and managed to call-up more players – six of them were able to attend the squad’s only training session to bring the number to 16 – just 24 hours before the clash with Mauritius.

Two more players have since arrived in camp – Madisha Modjeka of M. Tigers and Ndumiso Mabena of Platinum Stars. This means eight players have heeded the national team call up, bringing the total number of players to 18, with one more expected tonight – Wandisile Letlabika of Bloemfontein Celtic.

“It doesn’t matter who you play for or against, preparation is very crucial. Normally the day before the match we hold our practice session at the match venue where we are given about an hour, and there is not much you can do in that time, so we had to change the venue so we can have as much to train as we want. But the flip side is that it is just 24 hours before a match so you also can’t over train – we had to try and find a balance,” said Mashaba.

“We have to go out there and do it, even if we have 13 players we will go and play because we don’t want South African football to be in bad books. The fixture is there and we have to honour it. What is happening is not something one can be happy about. This is a good thing to happen so that people can know what is happening and what we are going through.”
Mashaba has also issued a warning to Mauritius that despite Bafana Bafana’s challenges they must come prepared.

“There are those who when they hear the news of the challenges will be more motivated to come and play, and have more energy because the opponents are not organised. But at the same time it is a danger to them if they think because we have struggled to assemble a team the match will be a walk in the park, they are making a big mistake. These boys will also want to do well and hoist high the South African flag,” said the Bafana Bafana mentor.

“We have called up a few players but the challenge is that some of those players don’t have passports – and without it you cannot play. The whole thing that has happened is an administrative issue which I don’t want to dwell on, it will not help, we have a game to play and we will go and play. It’s not the first time this happens.”

A negative result for the national team will have far-reaching consequences in future.

“I have spoken about the FIFA rankings and said that a bad result will put us at a disadvantage when it comes to being seeded for tournaments. What has happened here will lead to that. Some nations will be seeded and we will be placed in difficult groups which will put a further strain on the team to qualify for those tournaments,” added Mashaba.

The coach believes this matter has affected everyone, including the players.

“Even though I don’t want to talk on behalf of the players, I can safely say they must be feeling bad. There is no one who can be happy about this situation, and the players are no different – whether the ones who have been recalled by their clubs or those that have stayed with the team. Eventually it will affect the performance of those who will play because psychologically they can’t be fine. But we have to soldier on and be like professionals,” said Mashaba.

Three more players were expected to report for national team duty tonight (Friday, 19 June).

KFC angry over rat ‘hoax’

JOHANNESBURG  – A South African spokesperson for fast food retailer KFC claims a California man tried to deceive the public with an online post about a dubious take-away meal.

Last week Thursday, Californian security guard Devorise Dixon posted photographs and pictures of deep-fried meat on Facebook.

On Thursday, 11 June 2015, security guard Devorise Dixon posted photographs of a KFC meal he ordered. Articles on the meal, which appears to resemble a rat, have been published worldwide. Photo: Facebook / Devorise Dixon

“The pic is hoax,” read a recent post on Dixon’s wall.

Another friend wrote, “Bro I will never go to KFC.”

“Damn I thought this story was fake until I came here to the page!”

While Dixon did not ouright claim the meat was that of a rat, he described himself noticing a piece of KFC was “very hard and rubbery” and “in a shape of a rat with a tail” in his post.

In a week, his original post has been distributed on social media over 22,000 times. One of several copies of a video of the meat has been viewed over 800,000 times.

The material was picked up by news agencies in the United States, Costa Rica, India and South Africa.

Doug Smart, the Managing Director for KFC Africa, has responded to local interest in the mateiral with a statement. It describes a legal battle underway over the “alleged rat” images in the United States.

“Images of this meal were posted on social media and have gained attention in the South African market,” said Smart.

They have requested the product be sent to them so that an independent lab can evaluate the product at their own expense, however, the customer refuses to provide it.

According to Smart and KFC’s version of events, Dixon is unwilling to co-operate by providing the meat for testing. “KFC is left to believe that he intended to deceive the public with this hoax and are considering all options.”

At least two KFC branches in South Africa were embroiled in controversy this year.

There was a public outcy in May after images and video emerged of Braamfontein staff washing chicken on the ground of a back yard. Soon afterward, another customer posted video of Gatemax staff in uMhlanga apparently sharpening knifes in the street.

KFC responded to both instances, saying a staff blunder was behind the Braamfontein incident and staff at the Gatemax outlet had been issued a sharp warning over the video.
