Leaners at Matloding village outside Mahikeng in the North West face a bleak future as they have not been to school for more than two months. Violence has gripped the village as villagers support learners who are opposed to the relocation of their secondary school to a nearby village.
Schooling has been severely affected since April, as learners were ordered not to attend, until their grievances are met. Roads to the village are being blocked with huge stones, tree trunks and other debris.
A tribal office and a clinic were burnt by an angry mob. Now residents have no-where to go for medical assistance. This is a huge challenge to the elderly and pregnant women who now have to travel about three kilometres to the nearest clinic in Logageng village.
