Cardoso to Chiefs ‘will go through’

Free State Stars defender Daniel Cardoso has confirmed that his reported move to Kaizer Chiefs is “pretty much done”.

The newly capped Bafana Bafana centre-back is widely understood to have signed a three-year deal with the Absa Premiership champions, although the deal was not confirmed as was expected at a big Chiefs press conference last week.

Cardoso says he is waiting for his new club to announce the deal before he can talk freely about the move.

“There isn’t any more news, I want them [Chiefs] to make the announcement first,” Cardoso tells Sport24.

NWest man guilty of attempted murder

Rustenburg – A man accused of strangling his girlfriend and setting a shack alight while she was inside was found guilty of attempted murder in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Jimmy Kgokgome, 26, was sentenced to five years imprisonment for strangling 19-year-old Palesa Malesa.

Passing the sentence, Regional Court Magistrate, Christaan Nel, told Kgokgome that problems could not be solved through violence.

“If a problem cannot be solved in peace, it could not be solved in war. People must be reminded that there are peaceful ways to solve problems,” he said.

Nel said that Kgokgome did not seek medical help for Malesa after he throttled her, which resulted in her losing consciousness.

“You did not seek medical help. Instead you and your pastor prayed. You later went to a tavern to have few drinks. She was of no concern to you at that stage…You decided to destroy the evidence in that you killed her,” Nel said.

Prosecutor Rudolph Smit urged the court to impose a lengthy jail term and said he doubted that Kgokgome was remorseful.

“His action was unnecessary,” he argued.

Kgokgome’s lawyer, Norman Ngwenya, asked the court to have mercy on his client, pleading with the court to consider his age and that he was a first time offender.

“The accused was remorseful,” said Ngwenya.

“He outlined to the court what happened.”

During the trial, Kgokgome told the court that he felt “bad” about what happened.

“If I could change things, I could turn back things to normality, but unfortunately I cannot reserve what I have done,” Kgokgome said.

Kgokgome strangled Malesa in Lethabong outside Rustenburg on June 16, 2012. He said they had argued over R500 he had spent at a tavern drinking with friends.

He pushed her and throttled her. When she fainted, he put her on a bed and went back to the tavern. When he returned that night, he tried to wake her up but she did not respond. Later on Sunday, his church priest visited him and he told the priest that he had killed his girlfriend.

“He did not believe me, and we prayed together,” he told the court.

On Monday morning,, Kgokgome torched the shack, thinking that Malesa was dead. Dr Andrew Nkosi, testified in court that Malesa was alive when the shack was burnt, and that she had died of severe burns to her body.

Nkosi said she had burnt to such an extent that her stomach burst, and her internal organs were burnt. Her arms and legs, he said, were amputated as a result of the fire. She could not be measured or weighed due to the nature of her burnt body.

Kgokgome smiled to family and friends when he was escorted by court officials to the holding cell.

‘Warner wanted $7m to help Egypt’

Cairo – The former head of Egypt’s football federation said on Sunday that ex-Fifa vice-president Jack Warner asked for $7-million from Egypt, suggesting it could help with Egypt’s bid to host the 2010 World Cup.

Al-Dahshouri Harb told Reuters in a telephone interview that Warner expressed interest to him in being an adviser to Egypt’s bid and had said the money could be used to support poor football associations in Latin American countries.

Harb quoted Warner as saying at a meeting in the United Arab Emirates: “I have many votes in Latin America and I could be your adviser in Europe. I have many friends (there).”

Harb said Warner asked for $7-million, saying he would not take the money for himself but to give to “the poor clubs and federations in Latin America”.

The meeting took place before 2010, said Harb, who did not elaborate.

Warner could not immediately be reached for comment. He is among nine current and former Fifa officials and five corporate executives charged by the US Department of Justice with running a criminal enterprise that involved more than $150-million in alleged bribes.

Warner has denied the charges against him and has said he never took a bribe. “I have been afforded no due process and I have not even been questioned in this matter,” Warner, who is from Trinidad and Tobago, said in a statement last month. “I reiterate that I am innocent of any charges.”

Egypt famously failed to receive a single vote when the host of the 2010 World Cup was announced in 2004. The tournament ultimately went to South Africa.

Aley Eddine Helal, Egypt’s minister of youth and sports from 1999 to 2004, told an Egyptian TV show on Thursday that Harb had told him about the offer to help Egypt after their meeting.

“He came back and informed me that (Warner) had said: ‘If you want to win, you must pay $6-7 million. One vote costs $1 million’,” said Helal.

He said Egyptian authorities had rejected the offer.

Reuters could not immediately reach Helal for further comment.
