Taung- Community Safety and Transport Management MEC in the Bokone Bophirima Gaoage Molapisi appealed to the newly recruited traffic officers to serve the department with dignity and stay away from fraud and corruption.
Speaking at the welcoming event of the 50 newly appointed traffic officers, Molapisi said corruption is badly derailing government services to the people who deserve them. He said the newly appointed officers’ hands are clean and they must remain such.
“You are geared to maintain order and smooth flow of traffic, make sure that our people are and feel safe on our roads. I urge you to bring your professionalism, character, and training to all the challenges you will undoubtedly face during your traffic law enforcement career.
Be courageous, be honest, be caring, and know that you are doing one of the most important and necessary jobs to ensure the safety of our people on the roads.
“Treat our people with dignity and respect. My words of advice to you, is that your hands are still clean, you are pure, you are still our angels and I urge you to remain like that. Don’t be corrupted,” said Molapisi.
The officers have pass out from the Boekenhoutkloof Traffic College in Pretoria where they completed their 12 month training.
The youth were recruited by the department in partnership with the Department of Labour and the South African Safety and Security Training Authority (SASSETA) with an objective of increasing and intensifying law enforcement as well as addressing the shortage of traffic officers in the province.
MEC Molapisi said the department will continue recruiting unemployed youth and take them to Traffic College for training on Diploma Road Traffic Management through the departmental learnership programme. In 2011 the department recruited 20 officers and 50 in 2013.
He said the department intends to have at least 1200 traffic officers in the province, working towards providing 24 hours traffic management.
The recruitment and appointment of these newly appointed officers follows the department’s commitment to intensify traffic law enforcement operations and increasing the visibility of officers to reduce accidents and fatalities on all major roads of the province.
The 24-year-old Galaletsang Mere from Taung expressed her gratitude to the Department for giving her an opportunity to realise her dream.
From a family of eight, Mere completed her matric two years ago and she’s been unemployed all along. “I’m glad that we have successfully completed the course without any disappointment and today we commit to serve with dignity and dedication. We are going to save the lives of our people on the roads of the province and the country at large,” concluded Mere.
