SACP: EFF a dangerous cancer

Johannesburg – The Economic Freedom Fighters are a “dangerous cancer” trying to “smash” Parliament, the SA Communist Party said on Sunday.

“We call on all South Africans, including those members of the EFF parliamentary caucus who are themselves increasingly alarmed by the bus they have boarded, to isolate this dangerous cancer within our body politic,” SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande told journalists in Johannesburg following the party’s three-day central committee meeting.

“The leadership of the EFF is in Parliament in order to discredit and smash it.”

On Thursday, EFF leader Julius Malema objected to President Jacob Zuma’s reply to a question about when he was going to repay part of the R246m spent on security upgrades to his private Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete ordered the red overall-clad MPs out after they began to disrupt proceedings and started chanting “pay back the money”.

The MPs refused to leave, continuing to chant and shout slogans, forcing Mbete to adjourn proceedings.

Nzimande said Malema had long been supported by wealthy funders.

“We welcome reports that Sars is investigating the source of payments for Malema’s tax debt. It is Sars on behalf of the people of South Africa that needs to be saying to Malema and his dodgy backers ‘pay back the money’,” Nzimande said.

Malema was acting like someone who had nothing to lose, he said.

“His behaviour, not just in Parliament in Cape Town, but in the Gauteng legislature, continues along the same trajectory of anarchic plunder and wrecking anything in his way, that characterised his conduct in Limpopo and as leader of ANCYL.”

Sasol Banyana Banyana ease past She-polopolo

Johannesburg – Sasol Banyana Banyana beat Zambia 4-0 in an international friendly match played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka on Sunday, 24 August.

A first half goal by Shiwe Nongwanya, who plays for Bloemfontein Celtic ladies in the Sasol League and second half hat-trick by veteran striker Portia Modise from Gauteng Sasol League outfit Croesus, sealed the win for Vera Pauw’s charges.

This was the fifth match the Sasol sponsored women’s national team played as part of their preparations for the African Women’s Championships that will be hosted by Namibia from 11-25 October.

The home side enjoyed most of the possession in the opening 10 minutes of the match, putting Banyana Banyana under pressure and forcing them to play in their own half.

Goalkeeper Roxanne Barker made a great save by tipping the ball over in the fifth minute, denying She-polopolo ladies a chance to open the scoring.

In the 22nd minute, Banyana Banyana came close to breaking the deadlock after Simphiwe Dludlu made a cross into the box, but it fell into the Zambian keeper’s hands

Sasol Banyana Banyana opened the scoring on the half hour mark after Nongwanya received a great pass from Refiloe Jane, beating the defenders and scoring from inside the box.

Pauw made her first substitution of the match at the start of the second half, replacing youngster Thembi Kgatlane with Silindile Ngubane.

Banyana Banyana changed the pace of the game in the second stanza, enjoying most of the ball possession.

Modise doubled the score for Sasol Banyana Banyana in the 63rd minute after receiving a hard and low cross from Nongwanya, finishing with an easy tap-in.

Pauw’s charges took charge of the match, with Modise completing her brace in the 73rd minute and a hat trick in the 90th minute ending the match at 4-0.

Sasol Banyana Banyana travel back to South Africa on Monday afternoon to continue with their camp ahead of their next assignment in Polokwane against Tanzania on Saturday, 31 August 2014. That will complete what has been a successful women’s month.

Chiefs complete Dikwena rout

Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs set-up a Soweto Derby meeting with Orlando Pirates in the final of the MTN8 on September 20, courtesy of a 3-0 (5-0 aggregate) victory over Platinum Stars in their second-leg semifinal at FNB Stadium on Sunday.

George Maluleka scored a superb free-kick in the 29th minute to add a third goal to his tally in the semifinals, having already bagged a brace against the defending top eight champions in the first leg.

Amakhosi comfortably knocked out the defending champions in front of an impressive crowd at the iconic arena in Johannesburg.

The result was put beyond doubt 10 minutes after the half-time interval as Reneilwe Letsholonyane slotted home, before Katlego Mphela scored his first of the season in the dying minutes on a chilly afternoon in Nasrec.

Chiefs ensured a second derby meeting early in the season, following the Carling Black Label Cup in preseason, while at least two more derbies await when the fierce rivals clash in the league, home and away.

Pirates booked their spot in the final thanks to a 3-1 (5-1 aggregate) victory over Wits in Soweto on Saturday evening, securing a second successive appearance for the Buccaneers, who lost to Stars in the final a year ago.

Chiefs went in search of the opener from the off but failed to make any impressions after a quarter-of-an-hour, with George Lebese and Siphelele Mthembu both having a go, but none asking questions of goalkeeper Kabelo Dambe.

But when Letsholonyane saw his effort saved and deflected off the crossbar through Dambe’s intervention, the hosts looked the deadlier of the two and soon tightened their grip on the game.

Eric Mathoho was brought down in the edge of the area and that was all Chiefs needed to put Dikwena to the sword with less than half-an-hour on the clock.

An in-form Maluleka quickly hovered over the ball before curling a fine right-footed effort into the top left corner of Dambe’s goal, handing Chiefs a three goal margin and enough breathing space to start looking forward to the Derby on September 20.

Stars gave Chiefs a scare when Robert Ng’ambi broke through Itumeleng Khune’s gloves with a thunderous effort, which bobbled its way towards the line.

Tsepo Masilela, however, dashed backwards and cleared off the line, as television replays revealed referee Chris Mfiki made the right call not to award a goal.

Ahead at the break, Chiefs started the second period much the way they did the first and before long, Letsholonyane latched onto a pinpoint delivery from Masilela, side-footing home for his third of the season and his second in the top eight.

Stars had no reply and disappeared without a trace as they watched their defence of the top eight title fall by the wayside, Chiefs scoring in the second minute of additional time through Mphela, who tapped home and put the game to bed in the best way possible for Chiefs.

Arbitrator appointed in spy tape matter

Legal teams representing the Democratic Alliance (DA), President Jacob Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) have agreed on an arbitrator to review the full set of the so-called spy tapes records, DA leader Helen Zille has said.

“An agreement was reached today to appoint retired Supreme Court of Appeal [SCA] Judge Noel Hurt to act as an arbitrator,” she said yesterday.

“This appointment will now become an order of the SCA at a date to be determined by the court. Once the SCA has finalised this order, all spy tapes records will be released to the arbitrator.”

On August 15, a full bench of the SCA gave Zuma and the DA a chance to resolve their differences with regard to documents in the NPA’s possession involving the tapes.

At the time, the two sides agreed in principle to a third party, a senior legal mind, to be asked to judge what information formed part of the confidential representations of Zuma to the NPA.

The legal counsels had until 4pm yesterday to have an agreement delivered to the SCA.

An SCA court official confirmed yesterday that papers were sent to the court by the deadline.

In April 2009, then acting NPA head Mokotedi Mpshe withdrew fraud and corruption charges against Zuma.

In March last year, the SCA ordered the NPA to lodge a record of the documents on which the NPA based their decision, with the registrar of the high court.

The NPA refused to do so on the basis that it contained confidential representations by Zuma.

The High Court in Pretoria then ordered the NPA to adhere to the original order by the SCA for a reduced record of the documents that the DA was looking for. They included the so-called spy tapes.

Zuma appealed against this decision.

Zille said yesterday that only records determined by the arbitrator to be part of Zuma’s confidential submissions to the NPA, and therefore privileged, would not be released to the DA.

“The decision of the arbitrator will be final and binding on all parties,” she said.

“The DA’s legal team will then study the records on receipt to determine whether a high court review of the NPA’s decision is appropriate.”
