EXCO bids farewell to its Caretaker Director-General and Deputy Director General

Mahikeng- The North West Executive Council (EXCO) yesterday at its special sitting in Mahikeng bade farewell with a resounding round of applause to caretaker Director-General Johannes Rantete whose deployment contract comes to an end today.

The Deputy Director General for Policy and Governance Mr Danie Schoeman who is going on retirement was also given a befitting farewell.

Expressing the provincial leadership’s gratitude for the duo’s substantial involvement in stabilising and improving the provincial administration and its general performance, the North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo said their loyal, firm and profound technical stewardship was highly commendable.

Plucked from his post as an Advisor to Lindiwe Sisulu, the former Minister of Department of Public Service and Administration, Mr Rantete has been at the helm of the Provincial Administration since October last year and as EXCO puts it, he has diligently executed his assignment of strengthening the Provincial Administration” North West premier Supra Mahumapelo said.

Rantete was during his term of office as the caretaker Director-General, able to contribute significantly towards the current achievement of unqualified audit findings by seven Provincial Departments, the Office of the Premier and the Provincial Legislature.

“To ensure improvement in performance practices and governance compliance, Rantete ably facilitated the alignment of the provincial plan to the Medium Term Strategic Framework, and fostered the integrated ward-base planning in support of the Premier’s saamtrek – saamwerk philosophy” he said.

North West Acting Head of Communication Bonolo Mohlakoana said in recognising Schoeman’s wealth of experience in policy and strategy development, premier Mahumapelo committed his administration to ensuring that, even beyond his retirement, Schoeman’s capability continues to be used to the benefit of the province.

“Schoeman’s planning skill is certainly at the centre of our focus on anchor projects such as the Mahikeng Rebranding, Repositioning and Renewal Plan (MRRRP)”, emphasised premier Mahumapelo.

“Particularly because he was instrumental in the formulation and adoption of the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy in 2005”, said Mahumapelo who urged Schoeman to avail himself in future when needed for technical guidance and support.

Applauding Rantete and Schoeman for unselfishly applying their skills and experience in advancing the interests of the Province, Premier Mahumapelo said, “The main thing that you were committed to was to give everything you had, and we are happy that you did so meticulously,” said Premier Mahumapelo who disclosed that the duo’s dedication has received praises from the public servants and politicians alike.

“I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to work with the industrious men and women of this Province who have reliably demonstrated their will to serve the nation. This chance has truly been the highlight of my professional career,” remarked Rantete. Reflecting on his more than 25 years of public service, Schoeman said his has been a successful journey with many good stories to tell.

“I am throwing in the towel a happy person, as I am positive that the Province will continue from where we left off to perform its important duties with the honor and focus that the public expects”, said Schoeman as he bows out.

Jimmy Tau: he’s the pride of the Diamond City

images
Many remember him as the guy who went against the norm, moving from Orlando Pirates to Kaizer Chiefs in what was one of the most controversial transfers in the history of South African football.

But few people know that Jimmy Tau, the history-making former captain of both Pirates and Chiefs, hails from Kimberley in the Northern Cape.

A quiet man who these days hardly makes it to the front pages of local newspapers, Tau recently retired from a colourful career that saw him captain both the Soweto giants of the country’s football before playing for the senior national soccer side Bafana Bafana where his last appearance was at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations.

Matlosana financial intervention extended

471717483
Rustenburg – The North West executive committee (Exco) has approved the extension of the financial administration intervention in the Matlosana Local Municipality, local government MEC Collen Maine said on Wednesday.

“The initial intervention was for a minimum of six months and a maximum of 12 months which means the intervention ended in June 2014,” Maine said at a Matlosana council meeting.

“The extension of the intervention means that the powers or obligations of council of Matlosana on financial management will remain with the Provincial Exco for the duration of the intervention period which ends in December 2014.”

The municipality was previously placed under section 139(1)(b) intervention in March 2013, as a result of the deteriorating financial status which compromised delivery of basic services to communities, Maine’s office said in a statement.

In a S139(1) intervention, the provincial executive can intervene in a municipality when it fails to fulfil its obligations as set out in the Constitution or legislation.

The intervention allows for the provincial executive to assume responsibility for the relevant obligation.

Maine said the Exco approved additional funding for a forensic investigation into alleged maladministration, corruption and contravention of supply chain processes in the Matlosana Local Municipality.

Maine’s office said Matlosana mayor Kagiso Khauoe indicated the municipality’s acceptance of both the extension of the intervention and the investigation.

Khauoe told the meeting that the municipality had reached a common understanding with Eskom and the Midvaal Water Board.

Last year, Eskom reportedly threatened to cut electricity to Matlosana as the municipality was R91 million in arrears.

Former Scorpion accused of fraud

Crime-Scene
Pretoria – Former Scorpions advocate Jeff Ledwaba allegedly had R10 000 paid into the account of the prosecutor handling his fraud and theft case in an attempt to sabotage it, Beeld reported on Thursday.

The State alleged that the following day Ledwaba called the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) anti-corruption line and reported advocate Willem van Zyl as corrupt.

Ledwaba was appearing in the Johannesburg Regional Court with Elvis Manyama, who allegedly made the deposit, on charges of defeating the ends of justice, fraud, and corruption.

Ledwaba and Manyana would be back in court next month.

According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Rosina Schickerling, the money was deposited into Van Zyl’s account in Sunnyside on 29 October 2012.

Out on bail

He was not expecting payment and reported it to the NPA, the police, and the bank.

Van Zyl had taken over the prosecution after advocate Glynnis Breytenbach’s suspension by the NPA.

The cellphone number on the deposit slip belonged to Livingstone Gabara who said he made a deposit for Manyana.

Records show that Ledwaba made four calls to Manyana that day and withdrew R10 000.

Ledwaba had challenged a successful forensic voice match based on the telephonic tip off, and wanted one to be done overseas.

He is out on bail.

The NPA’s internal investigation found no grounds for the allegations against Van Zyl.

Ledwaba was found guilty in the original fraud and theft case and was expected to be sentenced on Friday.
