Five arrested in Manthestad in connection of armed robbery

Taung- Five suspects ran out of luck on Wednesday when they were reprimanded by the community of Manthestad village, near Taung in North West.

Five men allegedly robbed a supermarket in Mothanthanyaneng village, 18km away from Manthestad.

They allegedly entered a supermarket owned by Pakistan national and pointed him with firearms and robbed him airtime vouchers, cigarettes and undisclosed amount of money before they fled.

Aziz Shakid who is a shop-owner said he was in the shop in the morning around 09:30 am and five men pounced on him.

“They pointed me with a firearm and demanded money. They threatened to kill me and they helped themselves with airtime vouchers, cigarettes and undisclosed amount of money before they fled” Shakid said.

The shop-owner ran outside to ask for help after the suspects fled. The members of the community in Mothanthanyaneng reacted swiftly and chased after the suspects.

“We chased after them but the minute we approach them, they fired some shots at us, so we called some of the people in Mathestad to be on the look out as we driving towards the area chasing criminals” Pakistan shop-owner lamented.

The Taung police were called and four of the suspects jumped out of the car and tried to fled on foot after realising that they were cornered. 

The villagers chased after them along with the police and eventually their attempt bear some fruit when the arrested four suspects.

One of the suspects was arrested near Kolong village after police’s thorough search.

“We are investigating a case of armed robbery and theft after five suspects were arrested in connection of armed robbery” Taung Police Station Commissioner, colonel Mothusiemang Kgwenyape said.

Police confiscated a firearm and a car that were used during commission of crime.-TDN
