Thandekile Sabisa re-elected at OR Tambo

Image

The leader of the ANC’s OR Tambo region, Thandekile Sabisa, was re-elected on Sunday in a closely fought contest, a spokesman for the region confirmed.

“Sabisa obtained 294 votes as chairperson, while William Mkhize, who was contesting him, received 284 votes,” said spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane.

“The contest was very tight.”

Qoboshiyane said counting had not yet finished for other positions on the executive.

Another spokesman said earlier results would be announced once counting had been concluded later on Sunday.

Earlier, voting had begun after 5am on Sunday for the top five positions within the regional executive committee, said ANC Eastern Cape chairman Pumulo Masualle in a statement.

“[This follows] the successful resumption of the conference yesterday evening,” he said.

“Upon resumption the conference discussed the report tabled by the Conference Steering Committee about the discrepancies picked up from the credentials of the adjourned conference.”

Delegate numbers were affirmed at the conference, with 582 out of 588 delegates attending.

Earlier this month, the original regional conference was adjourned before new leaders could be elected. Its shutdown came after allegations that membership figures were inflated, and that there were several “ghost” delegates.

The outcome of the region’s election would be integral to President Jacob Zuma’s bid to retain the leadership of the party at its national congress in Mangaung in December.

The region is the largest in the Eastern Cape, and the second largest ANC region in the country, after eThekwini in KwaZulu-Natal — Zuma’s home.

US Astronaut, Neil Amstrong dies at 82

Image

The first man to set foot on the moon, renowned US astronaut Neil Armstrong, has died, his family announced yesterday, prompting glowing tributes to his achievements and notably humble character.

Armstrong, who inspired a generation to reach for the stars, underwent cardiac bypass surgery earlier this month after doctors found blockages in his coronary arteries, but he died following subsequent complications. He was 82.

Praising Armstrong as a “reluctant American hero,” his heartbroken relatives expressed hope his legacy would encourage young people to “work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves.”

Armstrong and fellow Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin landed on the moon’s desolate surface on July 20, 1969.

His first words upon stepping on the lunar surface have since been etched in history: “That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The estimated 500 million people who watched the grainy black and white broadcast breathed a sigh of relief when Armstrong told mission control the module had landed safely, saying: “Houston, Tranquility base here. The Eagle has landed.”

But the lunar pioneer, who was decorated by 17 countries and received a slew of US honours, was never comfortable with his worldwide fame, shying away from the limelight.

Armstrong even stopped signing memorabilia after learning his autographs were being sold at exorbitant prices.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, recalled Armstrong’s legendary humility. “He didn’t feel that he should be out huckstering himself,” the former Ohio senator told CNN. “He was a humble person, and that’s the way he remained after his lunar flight, as well as before.”

A “deeply saddened” President Barack Obama yesterday hailed Armstrong as “the greatest of American heroes — not just of his time, but of all time.”

Armstrong joined NASA’s predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, in 1955

“He was the best”

His “legacy will endure — sparked by a man who taught us the enormous power of one small step,” said Obama, who was just under eight years old at the time of the historic Apollo 11 mission. Republican House Speaker John Boehner remembered Armstrong as a “true hero.”

“Ohio has lost one of her proudest sons. Humanity has gained a legend,” Boehner said.

Aldrin said he had hoped that he, Armstrong and Michael Collins, the third astronaut on the mission, would have met up in 2019 for celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. But the occasion will not come to pass.

“Whenever I look at the moon, it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from Earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone,” Aldrin said.

Collins, in a statement released by a NASA spokesperson, said of Armstrong: “He was the best, and I will miss him terribly.”

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the astronaut’s death “marks the end of an amazing era in human progress. “His example of service, accomplishment and modesty… will never die.”

Born in Wapakoneta, Ohio on August 5, 1930, Armstrong had an early fascination with aircraft and worked at a nearby airport when he was a teenager. He took flying lessons at the age of 15 and received his pilot’s license on his 16th birthday. A US Navy aviator, he flew 78 missions in the Korean War. Armstrong joined NASA’s predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, in 1955.

As a research pilot at NASA’s Flight Research Center in Edwards,  California, he flew on many pioneering high-speed aircraft, eventually flying over 200 different models, including helicopters,  gliders, jets and rockets. He reached astronaut status in 1962, and was assigned as command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission, during which he performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space.

After retiring from NASA in 1971, Armstrong taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati for nearly a decade and  served on the boards of several companies, including Lear Jet, United Airlines and Marathon Oil.

He also worked as deputy associate administrator for aeronautics at NASA headquarters, coordinating and managing the space agency’s aeronautics research and technology tasks.

His family said they had a simple request to people in memory of Armstrong’s life. “Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink,” it said.

Do not cry for me-Armstrong

Image

Lance Armstrong says he no longer wants to

Lance Armstrong was back on his bike yesterday, urging his supporters not to ‘cry’ for him a day after the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) decision to strip his seven Tour de France titles and ban him for life.

In his first public appearance since announcing he would no longer fight doping charges brought by USADA, Armstrong finished second in a 36-mile mountain bike race in Aspen, Colorado, five minutes behind a 16-year-old rider, Keegan Swirbul.

Wearing sunglasses and black and gold riding gear adorned with sponsors’ logos, Armstrong appeared unfussed by the media throng that had travelled to the mountain resort amid concerns his legacy has been irrevocably tarnished.

“Nobody needs to cry for me. I’m going to be great,” Armstrong told reporters.

“I have five great kids and a wonderful lady in my life. My foundation is unaffected by all the noise out there. I think people understand that we’ve got a lot of stuff to do going forward. That’s what I’m focused on and I think people are supportive of that. It’s great to be out here,” he said.

Despite giving up the fight against the charges, Armstrong has maintained his innocence and railed against what he says is an unfair witch-hunt. The Texas-born cyclist, who famously beat cancer and whose foundation Livestrong has raised hundreds of millions of dollars in the fight against the disease, has retained major sponsors and enjoyed the backing of many key cycling figures.

Nobody needs to cry for me. I’m going to be great.

No longer concerned about racing

Others, including WADA chief John Fahey, say his failure to contest his charges can only mean he is a drug cheat who has defrauded the cycling tour, his rivals and millions of sports fans for over a decade.

The Armstrong case has yet to rest, with cycling’s global governing body, the International Cycling Union, demanding USADA hand over its evidence. The Court of Arbitration for Sport could ultimately have a final say on his guilt or innocence.

The retired Armstrong said he was no longer concerned about racing.

“It’s more about staying fit and coming out here and enjoying one of the most beautiful parts of the world, on a beautiful day, on a very hard course,” said the 40-year-old.

“Some may say you’re a little sick to spend your free time doing stuff like this. I had a good time.”

Armstrong remained the ‘seven-time Tour champ’ to teenager Swirbul. “I’m so psyched right now,” he said. “I wanted to win this race so bad.”

Donations to his foundation on Friday were up more than 20 times their daily average, Livestrong staff said, and Armstrong received positive crowd support in Colorado.

“The people like the people who are standing around here or on the course, they voiced their opinion in the last 48 hours and are going to support us,” Armstrong said, adding that the future of cycling was in good shape.

“It’s cool to get your butt kicked by a 16-year-old when you know he has a bright future,” he said.

“There are a lot of good young guys. Cycling is going to be fine.”
