Johannesburg- Orlando Pirates was crashed out of MTN 8 cup after they were beaten 3-0 by rampant Supersport.

This happened at Orlando Stadium,Soweto on a second leg semi-final of the MTN 8.

Soweto Giants were reigning champions and played to a draw on the first leg while visiting.

The referee nearly lost the control of the game as we saw tackles flying.

Pirates started to push forward in the early minutes of the game search for an early goal, but their every move was monitored under chattering eyes of Supersport who were not in any give-away mood.

The complex of the game were rather changed after former Bafana Bafana’s all time leading striker, Benni McCarthy could not control his temper.

McCarthy was sent off for a second bookable offence after Klate fouled by former Mamelodi Sundowns player,Cale.

The striker went on to confront Cale and were booked both of them, but McCarthy went onto Cale again for confrontation.

The game went to an interval with both teams still 0-0.

On the sixty one minutes, Supersport received a free-kick and the ball was sent into te 18 yards of Pirates.Players of both teams crumbled for it and finally landed on Ashley Hartog’s feet and uleashed a wonderful shot that resulted into a goal.

Pirates started to push forward in search for an equaliser and that left them opened at the back.

Pirates supporters became very impatient and didn’t agree with some decisions made by Robert Smith.

They started to throw some missiles on the pitch and the game was stopped before being continued.

Clifford Mulenga received pass from evergreen Zuma and round-up Pirates defence before hitting apowerful shot that left Moneeb Josephs sprawling on the ground.

“We played well before McCarthy was sent out. Now we had to change our game plan because of that. We brought few changes and unfortunately some decisions made by referee were biase, but he also  human being” said Pirates coach,Palacious.

Supersport also pushed forward and kept Pirates at bay by clipping their wingers. The buyoed side worked as a unit, as they caught Pirates on counter.

“It was not easy playing an enterprising side like Pirates thrice in a week. We had to be very tactical and I am very glad about the respond I received from my players” said Supersport award-winning coach, Gavin Hunt.

Mabhuti Khanyeza hit a final nail on Orlando Pirates coffin five minutes before full time when a scored a beautiful goal.

Tshwane-side now will meet the winner between Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows in the final.

SAFA Streamlined Organisation taking shape

Image

By Obakeng Maje

On Saturday, 18 August 2012, the SAFA NEC endorsed a number of important matters regarding the SAFA re-engineering process currently underway.

Key decisions taken include the following:1. The approval of a proposed organisational structure which will guide the reshaping of the administration of SAFA, and will be used as the basis of the consultation process which has begun with staff on the matter;

2. The approval in principle of a budget framework for the Association which will be presented to Congress for approval at the end of September, which involves cost savings at all levels of the Association;

3. A significant reduction in Committees of the Association from twenty three to eight, accomplished by a clustering of related committees.

Speaking after the NEC meeting, SAFA CEO, Dr Robin Petersen, stated “it’s been a long road since the process of change began in November 2011 and a real challenge to streamline the structure in a manner that can facilitate the delivery of SAFA’s mandate and achievement of SAFA’s vision in an efficient, effective and sustainable business manner, but I truly believe that, through working together with the SAFA President and Ad-Hoc Committee tasked to assist me in this process, we now have that structure”. SAFA’s re-engineering process was initiated following an NEC mandate to ensure that the organisation’s cost structures stay within budget and revenue projections and projects a significant staff overhead reduction going forward.

“The next stage is one of detailed negotiations with SAFA staff , who have been consulted and kept advised along the way, and fitting as many as possible of the current staff complement into the new structure. It is a fact that not all staff will be able to be accommodated and, in these situations due process will be followed. It is also possible that not all vacancies will be filled by current staff members as some of the positions require different combinations of skills and experience, but we will take these steps one at a time,” added Petersen.

The new SAFA structure is due to come in to effect on 01 October 2012.

It is not only the SAFA Staff structure that is affected by the re-engineering process. The Association’s governance structures have also been subject to review with specific focus on the number of oversight committees. “The NEC has approved a substantial reduction in the number of oversight committees, down from 23 to 8. This has been achieved through clustering of functions and responsibilities in order to maximize the efficiency of SAFA’s governance structures with the additional benefit of a reduction in costs,” stated SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani. “The current committee structure will be disbanded and replaced by 8 oversight committees with a consequent reduction in committee members from over 230 to 80.”

These proposals were unanimously approved at the NEC meeting.

The new Committees with their Chairs are as follows:

1. Finance and Procurement – Mr Lefore Lerefore

2. Commercial, International Relations, Media and Strategic Studies – Ms Nomsa Mahlangu

3. Technical and Referees – Mr Lucas Nhlapho

4. Legal, Membership affairs, Players Status and Dispute Resolution – Mr Poobalan Govindasamy

5. Ethics and Fair Play, Safety and Security, Protocol – Mr Jan Koopman

6. Organising Committee for SAFA Competitions, Football, Women’s Football, Youth Development, Futsal, Beach Football, Medical – Mr Sam Masitenyane

7. Internal Audit – Andile Ndengezi

8. HR and Remunerations – Mr Mzimkhulu Ndlelo

“SAFA is confident that through the re-engineering process we will become a stronger football association with the best governance structures and an efficient administration that is attuned to the demands of the modern football environment”, concluded Nematandan

Cato Manor squad killed to enrich themselves

Image

Durban – Thirty police officers, who appeared in the Durban Regional Court on Friday, were an organised crime enterprise that enriched itself by killing, according to the indictment against them.

It described the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit (the original name for the Cato Manor branch of the Durban Organised Crime Unit) as an “enterprise”, headed by KwaZulu-Natal Hawks’ boss Johan Booysen.

“The unlawful activities of the enterprise began to manifest themselves from May 2008 to September 2011 through a pattern of racketeering activities,” the State claimed in the indictment.

“… In some of their killings, the unlawful activities were motivated by the desire to enrich themselves through state monetary awards and/or certificates of excellent performance…,” it continued.

The policemen have been accused of obtaining financial benefits from associations, businesses and individuals which were in conflict with the people they allegedly killed.

The indictment did not provide details of how the officers enriched themselves, or of the benefits they were said to have received.

According to the State, the officers acted with “common purpose”, but it conceded it does not know “when and where the common purpose was formed”.

The case against the officers – 28 KwaZulu-Natal organised crime unit members and two National Intervention Unit (NIU) members – has been postponed until 29 October to allow the prosecution time to provide the men’s legal team with documentation about the case.

According to the indictment, the policemen face two charges of racketeering, 19 of murder, one of attempted murder, nine of housebreaking, three of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 25 of unlawful possession of a firearm.

They also face, 24 counts of unlawful possession of ammunition, six of theft, three of unlawfully pointing a firearm, one of malicious damage to property, and 23 of defeating the ends of justice.

On Friday morning, family and friends of the officers gathered outside the court building. The courtroom was packed to capacity and security guards had to refuse entry to some people.

The Mercury newspaper reported on Friday that charges against another two NIU members were withdrawn earlier this year.

Griekwastad murder “over emphasised”

Image

Kimberley – The bail application of a 16-year-old boy in the Griekwastad Children’s Court was postponed on Friday.

Magistrate OS Maswi said he would make his ruling on 3 September.

Willem Coetzee, for the boy, told the court the State had no direct evidence to link the boy to a Griekwastad farm murder.

The teenager was arrested for the murder of Northern Cape farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christelle, 43, and daughter Marthella, 14, who were shot on the family farm Naauwhoek on 6 April.

“Nothing shows he committed the crimes. It’s all circumstantial, even the DNA is circumstantial,” Coetzee contended.

He was cross-examining case investigator Colonel Dirk de Waal, who maintained the evidence was solid.

Coetzee said the State and De Waal had over-emphasised the brutality of the murders. He submitted that the investigator’s approach to the bail application had no foundation and that he was making assumptions “without grounds”.

He contended the boy was at least, as a child, entitled to bail. Coetzee said the investigator was biased, but that it was expected of a policeman to believe in his investigation.

However, the assumptions he had made before the court were unfounded.

Prosecutor Hannes Cloete described the defence’s witnesses in support of bail as subjective. The witnesses included the family supporting the boy, and his social worker.

Cloete submitted the State would go to trial with a strong case.

“Yes, it’s circumstantial evidence, but sometimes circumstantial evidence is stronger than witnesses,” he said.

He submitted that a bail application was not about determining guilt or innocence, but whether the State had a prima facie case.

Cloete said the investigation was nearly completed and that an indictment and a trial date in the matter could be finalised with a month.

The boy would be kept at a facility in Kimberley until the bail ruling.
