Barrier ‘cut into Mandela death car’

Members of the Mandela family, including Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, her daughters Zindzi and Zenani, and the child’s mother Zoleka were in court yesterday, as was Mankazana’s mother

A STREET barrier penetrated the rear right of the car in which former president Nelson Mandela’s great-granddaughter Zenani Mandela died in 2010, the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court heard yesterday.

Johannesburg metro police officer Henry Miller, a scene investigator and photographer, described how he found the barrier ripped from its bolts. It had been dragged behind the out-of-control luxury car.

Miller was giving evidence in the trial of Sizwe Mankazana, the driver on the night 13-year-old Zenani died.

Describing the accident scene, which took place on the M1 North just before the double-decker section, Miller said the speed limit in the area was 80km/h.

He outlined how the car hit a concrete barrier, then swerved across two lanes and hit the steel barrier.

Mankazana was driving Zenani home from the Soccer World Cup concert at Orlando Stadium on June 11 2010 when their car crashed.

Members of the Mandela family, including Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, her daughters Zindzi and Zenani, and the child’s mother Zoleka were in court yesterday, as was Mankazana’s mother.

Miller said he had stopped the morning before the accident at the exact spot where the accident occurred a few hours later. He had noticed the steel barrier had been damaged and was very close to the white line.

He told the court he tried to bend the barrier back into place. Eventually he used a length of cable to force it back by between 50cm and 70cm. In the early hours of the following morning he was back at the same spot, at the scene of the crash that claimed the child’s life.

The trial continues.

Absa Premiership: The battle for honours and survival!!

Benni McCarthy @ Backpagepix

There seem to be a general consensus in South African football now that it’s way too early to predict the destination of the Absa Premiership trophy this season.

To say the league race is tight will be both an exhausted cliché and maybe an awful understatement. This one – this Absa Premiership title battle – will go to the wire.

On Tuesday, the race continues but it is Wednesday that is likely to have an impact in the log standings at the top.

The battle for number one is intensifying but another drama is playing itself out in the bottom half o the table where at least six teams are facing the prospects of relegation – three of those teams are desperately searching for renewed fortunes.

On Tuesday night Kaizer Chiefs – who are fourth – will travel to Polokwane to take on Maritzburg United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Chiefs have 40 points – six points shy of log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates who are on par with points.

Amakhosi though will be looking to narrow the gap. They have a lot in their plate following the ‘amicable’ split with long-term coach, Vladimir Vermezovic.

On Wednesday, Orlando Pirates will make the short trip to Dobsonville to take on Moroka Swallows in the Soweto derby. Bragging rights might be at stake, but it the motivation for both these teams will be to keep up with the leaders.

Pirates are second but Gordon Igesund has built a formidable Fort in this Swallows sides and they are also still in the mix to claim top honours. Swallows are currently third with 42 points. A win will take them within touching distance to the leaders.

Sundowns, who have been leading the log since the start of the New Year will host Platinum Stars – a side that has seemingly turned the corner and undergone reincarnation.

At the bottom, Santos will be looking to bounce back from their Cup competition exit when they welcome SuperSport United at Athlone. Santos are second from bottom with 20 points.

Jomo Cosmos, rooted rock bottom, will travel to their alternative home ground in Port Elizabeth to face Bloemfontein Celtic at the Nelson Mandela Stadium. Cosmos, who are on 16 points, need both goals and results.

There is no denying that they have been playing romantic football, but ask any hopeless romantic – romance alone doesn’t pay bills. Results, and that alone, will elevate their position in the log.

Fellow strugglers, Black Leopards will travel to Charles Mopedi to play tricky Free State Stars.

Kaizer Chiefs will look to make up ground in the Absa Premiership title race when they host Maritzburg United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Chiefs come into the game having claimed a 2-1 win away to Platinum Stars in their last league outing. They have picked up three wins, two draws and two losses in their last seven matches.

The Soweto giants have a solid home record this season, with seven wins from 10 matches.

The Amakhosi are placed fourth on the Absa Premiership log with 40 points from 23 matches. Maritzburg drew 1-1 at home to Santos on their last league outing, their third successive draw.

The KwaZulu-Natal team has yet to win away from home this season, with seven draws and five losses from 12 matches.

The Team of Choice is placed 13th on the Absa Premiership log with 26 points from 24 matches.

In head-to-head stats, Chiefs and Maritzburg have met in 11 league matches since 2005/06.

The Amakhosi have claimed five wins and the balance of the matches are split evenly between draws and wins for the KwaZulu-Natal team.

Chiefs have won three of the five home matches they have had against Maritzburg, with one draw and one loss.

Legal dispute over e-tolls unfortunate – Sanral

South African National Roads Limited (Sanral) insisted on Tuesday it was not bullying motorists into registering for e-tolling.

The roads agency also described a legal challenge against e-tolling as “unfortunate”, saying it should not deter motorists from buying e-tags.

Sanral on Friday revealed penalties for drivers without e-tags will be up to three times higher than normal rates.

On March, the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance took Sanral and others to court, claiming consumer rights were being violated.

But Sanral’s Nazeer Alli said the courts will rule on this.

“As far as the legal case is concerned, it is a bit unfortunate that people have taken that particular route so late in the day, when they have known about the improvements to the Gauteng Freeway Project.”

Meanwhile, National Consumer Commissioner Mamodupi Mohlala confirmed she will look into complaints about the latest punitive rates.

ANC welcomes youth league’s stance

The African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday welcomed a statement issued by the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) distancing itself from controversial comments made by ANCYL’s Floyd Shivambu about Cyril Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa is the chairman of the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee of Appeals.

Deep divisions appear to have emerged in the youth league overnight.

Shivambu was first backed by the youth league’s Magdalene Moonsamy over his attack on Ramaphosa which was then denounced by the league’s Deputy President Ronald Lamola.

“We have seen the statement of the ANC Youth League and indeed we welcome it,” the ANC’s Jackson Mthembu told Eyewitness News.

The ANC said on Monday Shivambu brought shame and disgrace to the movement with his comments in a newspaper article over the weekend.

Shivambu criticised Ramaphosa’s decision to uphold his and Julius Malema’s convictions for sowing division within the ANC.

He said it showed Ramaphosa had sold out the revolution.

On Monday night Moonsamy put out a statement saying the youth league was worried about what it called “the ANC’s insulting of Floyd Shivambu”.

“Issues that have been raised by comrade Shivambu should be met with engagement,” she said.

An hour and a half later, Lamola said the league denounced and disowned that statement.

He also said Shivambu wrote the article about Ramaphosa in his personal capacity and it had nothing to do with the league.

Drogba puts Torres in the shade…!!!!!!!!

Didier Drogba’s 84 minute display was superb, but 10 seconds of Chelsea’s 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur should stand as proof that Roberto di Matteo must start him against Barcelona on Wednesday.

The Ivory Coast international may be 34 but his stunning goal at Wembley summed up why he should start against the Champions League holders – and extend his stay at Stamford Bridge

The moment came shortly before the interval. The Blues had just survived a pair of let-offs at the back as Rafael van der Vaart had had a header cleared off the line and a delicious cross had just evaded Emmanuel Adebayor before striking the post. It had been a cagey opening, but if anyone was going to break the deadlock it was Spurs.

Then, John Terry launched a long ball forward, as a method of pressure relief more than attacking intent. Drogba took control with his back to goal, held off William Gallas, flicked it out to his left in a move that seemed to take him away from a threatening position, a notion he dispelled immediately with a dexterous swivel and superb shot past Carlo Cudicini.

The Ivorian may be 34, but his strike was timeless, trademark Drogba – and it summed up completely why Barcelona will fear him far more than Fernando Torres.

Much has been made of Torres’ recent upturn in form, but all of it centres around its gradual nature. His work-rate, build-up play – smart crosses from the right wing, even. His goal to round off Chelsea’s Premier League win at Aston Villa was an encouraging sign of instinct slowly returning, but slowly is clearly the operative word.

The Spaniard is still finding his feet again and carries a visible nervousness in front of the net. His talents are known but there is absolutely zero sense that he is on the verge of an explosive, game-changing moment of brilliance of the kind that Drogba produced at Wembley.

That is the key. Picking weaknesses in this totemic, era-defining Barcelona outfit may seem like pointing out a shred of unripped shirt on the sleeve of the Incredible Hulk, but the aura of impregnability in their defence has waned, and must be targeted by a genuinely threatening striker if any side is to profit against them.

If Drogba starts on Wednesday, Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol et al will be aware that his powers could flare at any moment. That lingering menace creates uncertainty which can be exploited.

He may not be as mobile as he once was, but Chelsea’s bastionary battering ram has proved yet again that he can produce on the big occasion. It is a lesson already learned once this season when he blasted the Blues past Valencia in the crucial final game of the Champions League group stage.

As his age advances, Drogba’s involvement across a whole season is of course decreasing, but it is for games like Wednesday’s for which Di Matteo must save him. It is a policy which should continue into next year.

Tsutsulupa: League title is within reach…!!!

Moroka Swallows skipper Lefa Tsutsulupa believes that they can win the League title this season.

“We are in a very good position to win the League title this year. When the season started, we were aiming for a top 8 finish. Now things have changed.”

These are the words of Tsutsulupa, who believes his team has the ability to complete their fairytale run by snatching the League title ahead of favourites Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

The Birds are third on the log with 42 points and pose the greatest threat to the title ambitions of Sundowns and Pirates, who are on 46 points.

In a chat with KickOff.com, the Swallows skipper attributes the team’s impressive performance to collective teamwork inspired by an experienced coach.

Veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvete and midfielder David Mathebula have been a major driving force for The Birds, scoring 19 League goals between them.

“We have worked hard as a team and deserve to be third on the log. Everyone has to be given the credit,” says Tsutsulupa, who has signed a new three-year deal with Swallows.

“As players we are focused on going all the way. Why should we think of winning the League next season when we have already built a good platform to achieve that this year?

“What is important is for us to win all our remaining matches,” adds Tsutsulupa.

Swallows meet Pirates in a League match at Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday but will be without Tsutsulupa due to a yellow card suspension.

Tinashe’s shoes are big’ – Katsande!!!

BY Obakeng Rachwene and Kickoff.com

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande says it will be a tough act for him to live up to comparisons with veteran Tinashe Nengomasha.

The Zimbabwean has replaced his countryman in Amakhosi’s midfield in recent weeks, leading many to question whether ‘The General’s’ time at the club has come to an end.

But Katsande, who started this weekend’s Nedbank Cup defeat to Free State Stars, insists Nengomasha still has a big role to play.

“I don’t feel I am here to replace Tinashe. You know back home in Zimbabwe, we normally play together,” he tells KickOff.com.

“The good thing is that people are comparing me to Tinashe, eish, it is a big challenge because Tinashe is great player. If people say that I am similar to him it makes me really happy. It is a great honour.”

And if he is in the process of replacing the established defensive midfielder, Katsande adds that his boots are big ones to fill.

“Tinashe’s shoes, eish, they are big – he is a great player and if you look at what he has achieved, he has done a lot. I will just try my best all the time,” the 26-year-old says.

While Nengomasha sits on the bench, Katsande is playing alongside Lucky Baloyi in the midfield and the Zimbabwean defensive midfielder admits he is enjoying his time.

“Lucky and I understand each other a lot, but we are still young and need to work hard to achieve our goals. We are always chatting about how to contain our opponents in the middle of the park, but I am happy to be playing regularly,” Katsande says.
