Furman extends Oldham contract

RYAN COOPER

South African-born midfielder Dean Furman has signed a one-year contract extension at English League One side Oldham Athletic.

The 23-year-old, who was called up by former Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira for an international against Australia in 2008, joined Oldham a year later and was appointed captain at the start of this season.

“When I signed a three-year contract in 2009, there was an option to extend for another year,” he tells the club’s official website. “I am delighted to have accepted. I have enjoyed my football here and the last three years have flown by.”

Furman, who was born in Cape Town, came through the youth systems of Chelsea and Glasgow Rangers.

Youth agency wants to jail CEOs

The National Youth Development Agency wants the power to jail captains of industry who do not implement youth development policies.

The agency’s chairman, Andile Lungisa, said that, with 70% of the country’s jobless under 35, a more rigorous approach was needed to deal with the unemployment rate and the slow pace of youth development.

Speaking in Pretoria yesterday, Lungisa said the amendment of the National Youth Development Agency Act – which he hopes will reach parliament by June – would force both the public and private sectors to implement the national youth policy approved by the cabinet in 2009.

“We are currently amending the act. We want the act to be able to bite, and then we can hold people accountable, we can take people to jail, we can take people to the Human Rights Commission,” he said.

Lungisa said he hoped that government departments – under the oversight of Performance Minister Collins Chabane – would implement the policy guidelines.

He said the agency would use the National Economic Development and Labour Council to ask companies to promote youth development.

Lungisa said he was concerned that, in the private sector, youth development was moving at the pace of a “Beetle” instead of a “C-class” Mercedes-Benz.

He said some companies allocated their channelled funds from their charity budgets when asked to invest in youth development.

He also criticised the DA’s continued calls for Cosatu to stop opposing the implementation of the Treasury’s proposed youth wage subsidy at the council.

The launching of the subsidy, a R5-billion tax credit to be introduced over three years, was postponed this month.

Cosatu said the subsidy would lead to employers hiring younger, inexperienced workers to get the subsidy, and that they would then off-load their older employees.

“What will happen with the implementation of the subsidy: you put 200 young South Africans on the subsidy and then you subsidise big business.

“After two years … they are going to be off-loaded, they are going to go back on the street and take in other people. Is that addressing any challenges of unemployment?

“Why don’t we take that money and invest in skills, where young people will be able to start their own projects, where they can create their own jobs?”

Lungisa said South Africa should promote entrepreneurship, and cited Vietnam, which he said has an unemployment rate of only 3.5%.

Cosatu meets ANC to discuss tolling

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said it was due to meet with the African National Congress (ANC) again on Thursday to discuss possible alternatives to paying off the debt incurred in building the e-tolling system.

The trade federation announced plans to hold what it calls the “mother of all protests”.

E-tolling is due to go live at the end of the month.

Cosatu wants to find common ground on how to pay off the expensive infrastructure already in place for e-tolling.

It is adamant that regular drivers and passengers should not be the ones to spend years paying back that debt.

Cosatu said it will announce its final plans for protests soon and will keep a close eye on the legal challenge, which was launched to try and delay the launch.

That case will be heard in court next week.

South African National Roads Agency Limited meanwhile claims it is starting to see a pick up in the number of people buying e-tags.

SEVEN BOYS WHO GANG-RAPED 17 YEAR OLD GIRL APPEAR IN COURT!!!

BY Obakeng Maje

Seven suspects who allegedly gang-raped a 17 year old mental handicapped girl will appear in Rodepoort Magistarte Court this morning on charges of rape and kidnapping.

The girl was gang-raped three weeks ago and given R2 to buy her silence. Rape ordeal was filmed and the video since went viral around the country.

The seven boys aged between 17-20 were arrested and since after the rape took place, the girl went missing. But the girl was found yesterday afternoon and taken to the police station.

The MEC also visited the police station yesterday and had an eye-to-eye talk with the girl. SAP[S spokesperson, Kay Makhubela confirm the arrest. “We have arrested seven boys who allegedl;y gang-aped the young girl and the ordeal was filmed. And the suspects will appear before magistrate at Rodepoort Magistrate Court on charges of kidnapping and rape” he said.

NPA urge people who have the video on their cellphones to delete it and stop the distribution of it as that is illegal. This cost an outcry around the country.

Bucs thank Chiefs for Rantie

Orlando Pirates can thank Kaizer Chiefs for Tokelo Rantie because they had a hand in him joining Bucs. But now it will cost Pirates if they want to sign him outright.

“It was a Kaizer Chiefs fan who brought Tokelo (aged 14) to me,” recalls Farouk Khan, head of Stars of Africa Academy where Rantie was developed.

“He wanted me to take Tokelo to Chiefs (due to my contacts, having worked there) and I did, but nobody saw him when he was there at the time.”

So the 21-year-old from Parys developed at Khan’s academy and then moved to Sweden where he still has another year to go on his contract with IFK Hassleholm.

But nobody saw him when he was at Chiefs at the time
– Farouk Khan

KickOff.com understands there is interest from Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza in keeping Rantie beyond the end of this season when his loan deal ends.

Rantie has scored six Premiership goals this season and Khan believes he has done enough to warrant a decent offer being put on the table to try and persuade the Swedes to sell him.

“I AM NO F*** ILLUMINATI”-KENNY KUNENE!!!

BY Obakeng Maje

Illuminati is one of the underground syndicate that believed to be ruling the world, financially and according to the reports it has been there in ancient years.

There are so many signs that we as human beings been using and some of those signs people believe they belong to the organisation itself.

We have seen world renowned superstars been associated with the revolution, but no one came out and confirmed the claims.

The likes of Rihanna,Jay-Z,his wife Beyonce,Lady Gaga,John Cena and the list is endless. We have seen many people using those signs, whether to them are just signs or there is a motive behind those signs no one will ever tell.

Even the reports once suggest that our first black democratic president,Dr Nelson Mandela he is allegedly been implicated in a matter.

We South Africans watched SO WHAT reality show on Monday, to our disbelief we saw Kenny Kunene using one of signs associated to the organisation. And guess what,we asked our readers what they think of those signs.

The ex-convict also responded to our burning question, where he explained and cleared the air.

“I am not f*** ILLUMINATI and you should have asked what does those signs mean, before jumping to conclusions” he said.

Then our crew gave him a platform to clear the air further regarding his use of the signs, but somehow he chickened out as he never responded to our messages.

Whether we will see more signs come to life from the former ZAR or maybe those were tame signs only time will tell.

Can someone please explain to me what illuminati is?

Much talent on show at Franchise Colts Week

The North West Cricket Union once again hosted a successful Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Colt Week when the event came to a wrap on Sunday in Potchefstroom. This Week is seeing results of the hard work of everyone involved as more youngsters are being fed into the domestic semi-professional scene.

Administrators, umpires, players and spectators were treated to a week-long cricket festival where young talent, as a result of the patience, perseverance and persistence, were able to show off the skills that they had learned over the past year since the inaugural Week which took place at the same venue last year.

CSA Senior Cricket Manager, Max Jordaan said: “This Week was put in place to remedy the skills gap that developed in the execution in the Three-Day competition. The Week presented scenarios where players could apply themselves and go on to score double hundreds, put in hard work to take five wickets in multiple spells as well as where captains could make innovative declarations.”

The Franchise Colts Week consisted of each team playing two three-day matches in an effort for players to measure themselves up against their peers and to show off what they are capable of as well as to gun for a place in the much sought after CSA Colts Performance Squad, which is a feeder to the High Performance Programme.

“A squad of 20 players was identified for further development that would be facilitated by the scouts and their local coaches. These scouts comprise of former international and first class players that include Paul Adams, Victor Mpitsang and Wendell Bossenger. This multi-pronged engagement of player, scout and coach would be characterised through discussion, dialogue and reflective engagement by all parties concerned,” Jordaan commented.

Players went above and beyond the call of duty this year with more centuries scored and five wicket hauls taken than in the Week’s inaugural year in 2011. A record 11 centuries were scored, with André Malan finishing the Week as the top scorer with 410 runs that include knocks of 214 and 175 for the Nashua Titans. Six bowlers claimed a five wicket haul during the week; a bowler from each team took a fifer with the exception of the Chevrolet Warriors.

Jordaan, who was present at the Week and was there to witness all the milestones reached by players is very happy with the manner in which the Week has been taken onboard by players, coaches and adminishtrators and is especially happy with the direction that a tournament like this will take the development of players who come after the under-19 stage in their career.

“The abundance of talent on display at this Week makes this project an important link within the cricket development continuum,” he concluded.

Journalist killed in blue-light crash

april 7 crime scene

A journalist and a VIP protection officer were killed in a head-on collision in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday evening, the Zululand Fever newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Tim Ncube, a seasoned journalist in radio, TV and print media, was killed when the driver of a blue-light vehicle, part of a cavalcade escorting King Goodwill Zwelithini from his Nongoma palace to a Richard’s Bay hospital, crashed head-on into Ncube on the N2.

According to the Fever, the VIP driver was reported to have been attempting to overtake another vehicle.

The accident took place in a 60-80km/h zone near the township of Kwamsane. It is unclear if both or one vehicle was speeding. However the damage to both vehicles was extensive.

A third vehicle crashed into the wreckage. Three other people were injured.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize sent his condolences to both families.

“Ncube played a significant role in the promotion of peace, reconciliation and fostering better relations between various communities as a journalist at the height of political violence in KwaZulu-Natal,” Mkhize said in a statement.

“He dedicated his energies on serving the people of this province while working for the SABC and when he became a freelance journalist and lately when he worked for Bay Community Television.”

Mkhize said the sergeant would be missed.

“That he died at his prime time is not only tragic but very painful to bear. It is a great loss to the South African Police Service and to the province as a whole.” – Sapa
