Amajimbos hit Mzansi after victory


Johannesburg- Dr Danny Jordaan, President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), invites members of the media to the arrival press conference of the triumphant South African Men’s Under 17 National Team (Amajimbos).

The squad is expected to land at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg just after 07h00 on Monday, 29 September.

Amajimbos qualified for the 2015 African Youth Championships in Niger after a 2-2 draw in Egypt on Saturday (27 September). The match took place Contractors Stadium in Cairo.

The South Africans precede 4-3 on aggregate.

Nene told Moyane he had landed the top job at the SA Revenue Service (Sars), replacing Oupa Magashula, who resigned last July after a recording laced with sexual innuendo surfaced of him offering a 28-year-old woman a Sars post without following proper recruitment processes.

Public works lost R35 billion in five years: report


The public works department has lost almost R35 billion to wrongful and wasteful construction or leasing of state buildings in the last five years, The Star reported on Monday.

The R34.98bn losses were uncovered during the department’s review of around 1.3 million transactions of the Property Management Trading Entity (PMTE) dating back to 2009.

The losses were revealed in a confidential report that The Star reported it had seen.

The losses were … “a result of supply-chain management processes not adhered to”.

It revealed however, that there was a steady decrease in the losses of public funds in the last five years.

Around R22bn was lost in the 2009/10 financial year, R4.9bn was lost in 2010/11 while R3.8bn was lost in the 2011/12 period.

The figure was R3.1bn in 2012/13 and R600 million in the last year.Around R1.1 billion was lost to fraudulent activities.

Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi was expected to reveal the details at a media briefing on Monday while the report would be released to the public once it was presented to Parliament on Tuesday.

Hartswater deadly car crash case postponed

Hartswater- A case against a driver who was arrested after a deadly accident that left 15 people dead, was postponed on Monday by Hartswater Magistrate Court.

Elias Morebudi,66, appeared briefly before Hartswater Magistrate Court after he allegedly killed 15 people in a fatal accident in Magogong village, Taung.

The deadly accident took place on Saturday when Morebudi failed to adhere to the stop sign and allegedly ploughed into a taxi.

Morebudi’s nephew, Eric Sepato poured out his sincere message to all affected families.

“We would like to apologise to all bereaved families and as the family of the accused our heartfelt condolences goes out to them. We are all into this and hopeful Almighty will give them serenity” Eric Sepato said.

Morebudi was granted a R3000 bail which his family agreed to, but will only pay it at the later stage.

The case was postponed until 22 October 2014 and police investigations continue.-TDN

Woman who translated the Bible into Nama recognised


“She is not invisible any more,” Ursula Truper says with a thick German accent outside the VGK Church at Steinkopf in Namaqualand.

Truper is referring to her “great, great, great, great, great” grandmother, Zara Schmelen (nee Hendricks), a Nama woman who was born at Steinkopf in the late 1700s.

15 killed in Hartswater accident


Two more people have died after a bakkie accident on the N18 near Hartswater, bringing the death toll to 15, Northern Cape police said on Monday.

“Two more people died in hospital yesterday [on Sunday],” said Lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana.

A mini-bus taxi collided with a bakkie on Saturday afternoon killing 13 people, police reported on Sunday.

“Some of those who died are children but I cannot confirm how many or their ages until their families have come in to identify them,” Tawana said.

Twenty-four other people, including the driver of the taxi, were injured in the crash, he said.

“The passengers from the bakkie were flung off and strewn all over the N18 and others landed into a nearby water canal,” Tawana said.

Four bodies were found in the canal while the jaws-of-life had to be used to free people who were trapped inside the taxi.

The injured were taken to Hartswater,Taung and Klerksdorp hospitals.

The 59-year-old driver of the bakkie was expected to appear in the Hartswater Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“He will now be facing 15 charges of culpable homicide,” said Tawana.

One arrested, three at large for Business Robbery

Swartruggens- Police are investigating a case of business robbery after four male suspects robbed the complainant on Saturday at approximately 02:00am at Mazista near Swartruggens. 

“It is alleged that the complainant was asleep when the suspects gained entrance through the roof and hit the complainant with an iron bar. The complainant was allegedly forced to hand the tuck-shop key to the suspects who opened and took cigarettes and grocery to the value of R2000” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said. 

The suspects were traced and one of them aged 30 was eventually arrested.

He is due to appear in Swartruggens  Magistrates Court soon.

One died, another one critical injured

Wolmaransstad- A case of culpable homicide has been registered after a vehicle knocked down two male pedestrians aged 21 and 24 at Extension 10 and N12 road junction on Saturday at around 04:30.  

According to the information, one died on the scene while the other one sustained serious injuries, and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

“It is not yet known what could have led to the collision, and investigation continues” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

A man bludgeoned to death in Mahikeng

Mmabatho- A 24-year-old suspect is expected to appear in Mmabatho Magistrates Court on Monday for the alleged murder of a 40-year-old man at approximately 04:30 on Friday,says North West police. 

“It is alleged that an argument that led to a fight ensued between the two. The suspect allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest, and he died on the scene” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.  Investigation into the matter continues.-TDN

Hartswater crash driver arrested as 12 people succumb to injuries

Hartswater police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a bakkie which was fully loaded with passengers collided into a taxi. The incident happened Saturday at about 15H00 and 16H00, on N18 between Taung and Magogong.

The emergency services personnel had to utilise the jaws of live to free other passenger who were trapped inside the taxi as a result of the impact of the vehicle collision.

The passengers from the bakkie were flung off and strewn all over the N18 and others landed into a nearby water canal.

“During our investigation on the accident scene four lifeless bodies were retrieved from the canal and other bodies were scattered on the road. Twelve people were certified dead on the accident scene and one died while admitted at the hospital” lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana said.

Twenty six occupants who survived the accident with critical injuries, have been transported to Hartswater, Taung and Klerksdorp Hospitals to receive medical treatment.

The driver of the bakkie, a 59-year-old man have been arrested and charged with culpable homicide, he will appear before the Hartswater Magistrate’s Court Monday.-TDN
