Harshly penalise minibus taxi driver – Peters

Johannesburg – The driver of the minibus taxi involved in an accident in which 11 people were killed in Mpumalanga must face harsh penalties, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Monday.

“I am calling for a harsh penalty, with no bail of the driver who allegedly was in possession of a fake driver’s license,” the minister said in a statement.

The taxi owner should also be held responsible for hiring a driver without verifying his credentials.

“The taxi associations and council must take action,” Peters said.

The provincial community safety department said on Friday that apart from the 11 killed, six others were injured when the taxi and a truck collided head-on on the R23 between Perdekop and Standerton.

Eleven people died on the scene on Friday afternoon when the minibus they were travelling in failed to stop at a “stop and go” construction site, spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said in a statement.

The driver of the taxi, who at the time of the accident did not have right of way, continued to drive on in the single lane road.

“The driver skipped the ‘stop and go’ operation and collided with the truck,” Mabuza said at the time.

On Sunday, the department said the taxi driver had been arrested for having a fake driver’s licence.

Peters said the crash was being investigated by the transport department, Road Traffic Management Corporation, and the provincial government.

Apart from determining the cause of the crash, the investigation would look at ways to prevent future accidents from taking place.

The minister sent her condolences to the families of those killed and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Ngobeni should be fired- DA

Johannesburg – Allegations about KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni’s dealings with businessman Thoshan Panday should see her fired, the DA said on Sunday.

“The DA calls for the immediate axing of Ngobeni,” said Democratic Alliance member of the provincial legislature Rishigen Viranna.

Last week, The Witness newspaper reported on a dossier it had obtained which it claimed indicated Panday had paid for a party in 2010 for Ngobeni’s husband.

The newspaper reported that the dossier contained invoices, payment slips and sworn statements that indicated Panday had paid for the celebration.

In the same year, Panday was also linked to an investigation into the allegedly inflated prices – apparently amounting to R60m – that his company charged police for World Cup accommodation deal.

Previously, the Hawks investigated Ngobeni and Panday in connection with the party payments, but the inquiry was abandoned, reportedly due to a lack of evidence.

On Sunday, Viranna said that the DA called on provincial community safety MEC Willies Mchunu to take a “firm stand” on the matter.

“We call on him to present an executive statement to the provincial legislature without delay, outlining the punitive actions he will be taking against Commissioner Ngobeni.

“This must include the immediate firing of the Commissioner.”

Comment from Mchunu’s office was not immediately available.

Date set for EFF hearing on Parly fracas

Johannesburg – The powers and privileges committee in Parliament will on Tuesday commence with a disciplinary hearing against 20 EFF MPs who heckled President Jacob Zuma in the National Assembly.

“The committee will communicate with the media and the general public after the initial deliberations to determine whether or not to open the proceedings to the media,” the parliamentary communication services said in a statement on Sunday.

It said according to the rules of the National Assembly, the meeting should be a closed session, but provision can be made for the committee to open proceedings if all parties agree to it.

On 21 August, Economic Freedom Fighters MPs brought Parliament to a standstill by shouting “pay back the money” at Zuma during presidential question time. This was in reference to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s recommendation that Zuma pay back part of the money spent on his private home in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

On 29 September, the Western Cape High Court denied the EFF an urgent interdict to halt the disciplinary proceedings.

MEC Mohono conveys her heartfelt condolences to families of four Chinese tourists

Rustenburg- The North West MEC for Tourism, Desbo Mohono has expressed in shock her deepest condolence to the families of four Chinese tourists who recently lost their lives following a fatal accident which occurred on the R556 road between Sun City and Brits in the Bojanala Platinum District while on their six-day Africa tour organized by the Walk Through Africa Tours (WATAT).

“It is with a heavy heart that we convey our deepest and most sincere condolences to the families that lost their loved ones. It is truly unfortunate and disturbing to us as a province that such atrocity occur when these tourists were here to experience our tourism products which we have to offer. We would also like to sympathize with the families of the injured, wish them well and hope their loved ones recover soon”, said MEC Mohono.

The Chinese tourists whom most are from the northern part of China were reportedly traveling to Johannesburg after their tourism trip to Sun City when another vehicle collided head-on with their tour bus.

MEC Mohono said that such incidents are becoming a deterrent to the department’s endeavors to attract more tourists into the province.

“We are committed to ensuring that the North West province becomes a preferred tourist destination, and we can only achieve that if we ensure that our tourists are safe from all sorts of harm. However, I am still adamant and would like to assure all our tourists both local and international that the North West province is still a safe province to tour”, she concluded.
