Premier Mahumapelo calls for unity against religious intolerance and xenophobia  


Mahikeng- Communities should unite against religious intolerance and Xenophobia, North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo highlighted in declaring support for the “Bring Back Our Girls Campaign” in his Africa Day Message.

“Africa’s funding fathers envisaged a united and strong Africa that is free of violence, political strife and conflicts. We owe it to future generations to give freedom meaning through accelerated service delivery,” Premier Mahumapelo said.

Mahumapelo said that founding fathers like Pixley Ka-Seme, Kwane Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Augustinho Neto, Oginga Odinga, Kenneth Kaunda, Amilcar Cabral, Thomas Sankara, Samora Machel, Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela knew that the existence and experience of peace and stability is as one of the preconditions foreconomic growth and development.

“Good governance enhances democracy as well as efficiency in the economy and is critical for us to sustain our hard-won freedoms,” he added.-TDN

SACP: Stop gambling with workers’ lives


Johannesburg – Platinum mining companies must engage genuinely with all the affected parties in the four-month-long wage dispute in the sector, the SA Communist Party (SACP) said on Sunday.
Spokesperson Alex Mashilo said parties must ensure that a collective bargaining agreement was reached with immediate effect.
“Instead of being intransigent, the mining corporations, which have previously made billions of rands, must appreciate the plight of the workers by improving their working and living conditions through decent work, including better wages and benefits.”

He said the SACP called on the trade unions involved to stop gambling with the lives and jobs of the workers.

“Such unguided militancy has the potential to lead to job losses and roll back the many gains made by mineworkers, especially since 1994.”
Members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) at Lonmin [JSE:LON], Impala [JSE:IMP], and Anglo American Platinum [JSE:AMS] (Amplats) in Rustenburg in the North West province and Northam [JSE:NHM] in Limpopo downed tools on January 23 demanding a basic monthly salary of R12 ,500.

They rejected the companies’ offer that would bring their cash remuneration to R12 500 by July 2017.
The strike has cost employees R8.6bn in earnings and companies have lost R19.5bn in revenue according to a website, platinumwagenegotiations.co.za, created by the companies.
Labour Court brokered mediation talks between Amcu and the companies were ongoing, after no agreement was reached on Friday.

Platinum producers said on Friday they were committed to finding a common commitment to resolve the dispute.

The strike, now on its 122nd day, has been marred by violence and intimidation leading to the deaths of five NUM members.
“The SACP further calls upon workers not to be used in turning against other workers,” Mashilo said.

He said the SACP was gravely concerned with, and also strongly condemned, the intimidation, torture, violence and killings that continue to take place in the Rustenburg platinum belt.

Igesund: This is the team for the future


Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund says regardless of the result when his charges take on the Socceroos of Australia, his squad was bound to go places in years to come.

“They are bound to become integral members of the country’s vision of competing against the giants on the continent and in the world. The Association’s vision is to be constantly number 3 in Africa and among the best 20 countries in the world and these boys will play a major role in the realisation of that dream.

“That journey starts now and this tour will mark the beginning of a new era in South African football,” Igesund told journalists on the eve of Bafana Bafana’s match against Australia.

Bafana meet Australia in Sydney on Monday evening (11h30 South African time) in a fixture which serves as the Socceroos’ final home match before they fly to Brazil for the World Cup in June.

They Australians are in Group B with champions Spain, losing 2010 FIFA World Cup finalists Netherlands and Chile.

“This is a competitive bunch of talented players. They will go places; watch my words,” added Igesund.

“I am very excited with what I have seen from them in the few days we have been together. They are eager to learn and want to leave a lasting impression.”

After Monday’s game, Bafana Bafana leave for Auckland, New Zealand to play islanders on 30 May before returning home on 1 June.

Meanwhile, Australian skipper Tim Cahill told journalists he was very much still enjoying his game and will decide his future after the two-month fiesta in South America.

The New York Red Bulls midfielder said it was every player’s dream to represent his country especially at the FIFA World Cup and was delighted to still be part of the Aussie set-up.

“This type of experience is priceless and is something that you look back on when you get old and tell your children. This is the start of some big things and hopefully the team can be consistent and the boys will realise that just being a good professional and showing a good attitude at the same time will take them a very long way.”-TDN

Mathoho to return to South Africa


 Bafana Bafana defender Eric Mathoho will travel back to South Africa immediately after taking part in Monday’s international friendly against Australia, to attend the funeral of his cousin, who passed away this weekend.

The sad news reached the Kaizer Chiefs defender in Sydney on Sunday, on the eve of Bafana’s friendly international clash with World Cup-bound Socceroos.

The match will take place on Monday, 26 May 2014 at ANZ Stadium at 11h30 South African time.

As a result, Mathoho will not join the rest of the squad in New Zealand for their international friendly in Auckland.

No replacement will be called up to replace the towering Kaizer Chiefs defender.-TDN

Family perish in a fatal accident

Delportshoop- Police are investigating a culpable homicide and drunk and driving after an accident took place 5km outside Delportshoop on the R31 road on Friday at approximately 19:45.

“It is alleged that the Silver Double Cab Bakkie traveling with two families veered off the road and rolled several times. Four persons known as Klaas Letlhaku,40, Leticia Letlhaku,34, Kago Letlhaku,11, and Orakile Letlhaku,1, died” Lieutenant Sergio Kock said.

Kock said ambulances transported the driver and 10 other persons to Barkly West Hospital for medical treatment.

“It is alleged that the families were en route from Kathu to Barkly West for a wedding” he said.

The exact cause for the accident is still under investigation. All information can be forwarded to Det WO Mick Mocwane at 082 448 4850.

Fraud case against new MP


New ANC MP Patrick Mabilo is being investigated for fraud, the Hawks said on Thursday.

“We have a fraud case to do with his credit card,” spokesman Paul Ramaloko said.

“Investigations are still ongoing.”

He said the case was opened in 2012 against Mabilo, a former Northern Cape transport, safety and liaison MEC.

Ramaloko could not give more detail.

According to City Press online, Mabilo had racked up a bill of close to R200,000 in 2012/13 and had not been able to provide the necessary documents to prove his expenditure.

Mabilo was number one on the African National Congress’s Northern Cape’s list of candidate nominations for the National Assembly.

He was sworn in as an MP on Wednesday at the first sitting of the fifth democratic Parliament.

Kaizer Chiefs youth development product, Philani Cele, has  received high praise for some of his natural ability and rich potential. The 22-year-old was promoted to Chiefs’ first team squad in November last year after impressing under Donald Khuse in the development ranks.
He went on to make his official PSL debut when he got some game time against University of Pretoria in December. The rising star is yet to become a regular member of the club’s first 11, however it appears he has a bright future at professional level.
