Johannesburg – Three more ANC MPs quit Parliament on Friday, bringing to seven the number of resignations since Sunday, the office of the ANC chief whip said.

“They are former minister of correctional services Sibusiso Ndebele, former minister of women children and persons with disabilities Lulu Xingwana, and former deputy minister of social development Maria Ntuli.

“As it is normal with similar resignations, there were no reasons provided in their letters,” Stone Sizani said in a statement.

The resignations are effective from Friday.

Seven ANC MPs have resigned since President Jacob Zuma announced his new Cabinet on Sunday.

These resignations follow those of former National Assembly speaker Max Sisulu, former tourism minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Tito Mboweni and Zizi Kodwa.

Zuma replaced Sisulu with Baleka Mbete and shifted Science and Technology Minister Derek Hanekom into the tourism portfolio, leaving Van Schalkwyk – who has served as a Cabinet minister for the past decade – out in the cold and set to serve as an ordinary ANC MP.

Kodwa has been appointed as spokesman for the ANC.

Sizani said his office extended the ruling party’s deepest appreciation to the former MPs for “the distinguished and diligent service” they rendered to the country.

“While their departure from Parliament will leave a void, we derive satisfaction from the knowledge that we will continue to tap into their wealth of political and leadership experience they accumulated over decades.

“Indeed these comrades have expressed their commitment to continue serving the movement and the people of South Africa in other capacities,” Sizani said.

Bloemhof- With only few days in the office the North West Department of Local Government and Human Settlements, Collen Maine, has hit the ground running to resolve the water debacle at Lekwa-Teemane Municipality. Local residents were admitted at the local hospital and clinics for diarrhea and stomach cramps after drinking contaminated water.

MEC Collen Maine said a bacteria was detected in the municipal dam which subsequently contaminated the water.

“The water system was then flushed out and reservoirs emptied to clean up the water distribution system. The tests are still being conducted to determine the type of bacteria in the water; though it is suspected to be the E coli. The Municipality had to stop distributing water to the community for safety precautions and the population of 30 000 was affected” said MEC Maine.

Results of water tests will be out on Monday but further test will still be conducted to ensure that the matter is amicably resolved. MEC Maine further said “water has been restored to residents since yesterday evening and the situation will normalize as from next week. However residents are still advised to boil it before drinking or cooking.

As a temporary measure residents are also being provided with water through tanks. Two technical committees which consists of officials from Lekwa-Teemane local and Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality, Department of Health, Department of Water Affairs, Sedibeng Water and other stakeholders has been established to mitigate the effects of the incident including and make awareness campaign including health safety measures.-TDN

Durban – A schoolgirl, who started prostituting herself at 13-years-old for R50 per sexual encounter, told the Durban Regional Court on Friday she wanted to see nothing more than her pimp punished.

“I am still angry with him. I will never forget what he did [to me] even when I sleep. I would truly like for him to be punished for that,” the girl said.

She was responding to a question in court about whether she was angry at Sandile Patrick Zweni, the man who allegedly operated a prostitution ring out of Durban’s Inn Town Lodge.

Zweni, Dr Genchen Rugnath, Rugnath’s wife Ravina, Nonduzo Dlamini, and Bhabha Dubazini are accused of running a brothel with girls as young as 12. The five have pleaded not guilty to 156 charges, including assault, rape, sexual exploitation of a child, and racketeering.

The girl, who is now 19 and cannot be named, told the court during her evidence in chief earlier this week that she would charge R50 for sexual intercourse and R100 for both sexual intercourse and oral sex.

‘Everything I said is the truth’

On Friday, under cross-examination by Mbulelo July, for Zweni, she denied she was fabricating her evidence, but admitted that she was extremely angry with him.

She told the court she was also angry with Zweni because he had had sex with her.

“I’m not lying about him. Everything I said is the truth about him.”

She said that while she worked at the Inn Town Lodge, the money she earned would go towards buying drugs.

Inn Town Lodge is owned by Rugnath, who claims he knew nothing about prostitution at the hotel, located in Durban’s Point Road area and left the running of his hotel to manageress Veena Budhram.

Point Road is known for its red-light activities.

Budhram was also initially charged, but has since turned State witness.

Auckland- Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund said the Australasia tour, which saw his charges draw with Australia and New Zealand, had achieved its desired objectives.

South Africa drew 1-1 with 2014 FIFA World Cup-bound Socceroos on Monday, 26 May and 0-0 with the All Whites of New Zealand at Mt. Smart Stadium on Friday, 30 May to round off what the coach described as a satisfactory tour.

The Bafana Bafana entourage leave New Zealand on Saturday and are expected to land at OR Tambo Airport at 16h15 on the same day.

Reflecting on Friday’s game against the All Whites, Igesund said his team had dominated possession but was not ‘very happy’ that they failed to convert their dominance into victory.

“We should at least have put away one or two chances but we at times over-elaborated when taking a shot would have been a better option. At times, I detected that some players didn’t want to take the responsibility. But overall, I am quite pleased with how the boys played,” he said.

Igesund who brushed aside talk of his imminent abdication of the national team duties said New Zealand were not pushovers as many had predicted.

“They are enthusiastic, full of running although some of their tackles, especially on Thulani Serero bordered on recklessness. I thought the referee should have been more firm and stamped his authority. But there was nothing malicious apart from it being youthful exuberance on the home side’s players.”

The 57-year mentor said football matches involving Australia, New Zealand and South Africa should become regular occurrences just as is the case with rugby and cricket.

“The three countries have a lot in common and I think the only missing link is to solidify relationships on the football front. The two Australasian countries are a good destination for most South Africans both on the cultural and sporting front and football should seal that bond,” added Igesund.

A local schoolboy died in an explosion after attempting to recreate a science experiment at home on Thursday.

Chauncey Davids, a fourteen-year-old pupil at a Mitchells Plain school in Cape Town, had allegedly been attempting to recreate a science experiment when the material exploded and started a fire in his home, according the Cape Argus.
