DA moves to shut down online gun trade with Cyber Commissioner

By BAKANG MOKOTO

14 October 2025- The Democratic Alliance (DA) said criminals are using online networks to traffic guns and the South African Police Service (SAPS) is struggling to stop them. The DA said it proposes a Cyber Commissioner to fight cyber-enabled crime.

The DA spokesperson on Justice and Constitutional Development, advocate Glynnis Breytenbach, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP), said this institution would help dismantle criminal networks and protect communities. Breytenbach said recent reports show criminals are increasingly using online platforms and covert couriers to move illegal firearms into the Western Cape.

She further said this exposes a major weakness in South Africa’s policing. Breytenbach added that, despite identifying the proliferation of illegal guns and the need for secure cyberspace as top priorities in its Strategic Plan, SAPS has not yet fully intercepted the digital networks driving organised crime.

“The DA believes the solution lies in creating a dedicated Cyber Commissioner, an independent Chapter 9 institution, as proposed in our 20th Amendment to the Constitution. The Cyber Commissioner would provide the government and the private sector with the tools and expertise needed to tackle cyber-enabled crime.

“It would act as a central hub to monitor online threats, coordinate training, and set clear standards to protect sensitive information. Most importantly, it would give SAPS and other law-enforcement agencies the capacity to investigate and disrupt criminal networks that use the internet to move firearms, drugs, and other illicit goods,” she said.

Breytenbach said now that the Western Cape Police Commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, has admitted that the SAPS cannot contain this situation. She said they call on the Minister of Police, Prof Firoz Cachalia to step in and fully support this initiative and ensure it is implemented without delay.

“This new institution would work hand-in-hand with existing policing measures. Intelligence-led operations, cyber-forensics teams, real-time tracking of lost and stolen firearms, and partnerships with tech and cell phone companies to flag suspicious activity would support the Commissioner’s work.

“Together, these measures would allow law enforcement to not only make arrests but also secure convictions and dismantle criminal networks,” said Breytenbach.

She said by establishing a Cyber Commissioner, the DA is putting forward a practical solution to protect communities, secure cyberspace, and stop criminals from exploiting online networks to fuel violence. Breytenbach said modern organised crime demands modern institutions and this is a decisive step toward making our country safer.

DA slams SANDF disaster inaction

By REGINALD KANYANE

18 June 2025- The Democratic Alliance (DA) said the reports today reveal that disaster management authorities formally requested South African Air Force (SAAF) assistance for flood relief in the Eastern Cape, but no help was forthcoming until yesterday-more than a week after the floods began.

The DA spokesperson on Defence & Military Veterans, Chris Hattingh, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP), said according to African Defence Review Director Darren Olivier, the request was made fairly early, but the SAAF could not respond due to a lack of available aircraft and flight crews. Hattingh said the DA condemns this failure in the strongest terms.

“Over 90 lives have been lost and thousands displaced, yet the SANDF only managed to deploy a single Oryx helicopter, days too late and wholly inadequate for the scale of the disaster. This is not an isolated incident. It is the latest evidence of a deep and systemic collapse in the SANDF’s operational capability.

“The same dysfunction was exposed during the chaotic withdrawal from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. What was once a foreign policy failure has now become a domestic humanitarian crisis,” he said.

Hattingh further said the SAAF, once a critical first responder during floods, fires and natural disasters, is now near collapse. He added that most aircraft are unserviceable, maintenance budgets have been gutted and key personnel, especially flight engineers are leaving the force due to poor pay and conditions.

“This is not just a funding problem. It is a failure of leadership and political will. The DA calls on Defence Minister Angie Motshekga to appear urgently before Parliament to account for the delay in deploying aerial support, despite early requests from disaster authorities.

“To disclose how many flight engineers, serviceable aircraft, and qualified pilots are currently operational. Present an emergency plan to address the looming flight engineer shortage that could halt air operations entirely by December; and explain how her department intends to restore domestic disaster response capability,” said Hattingh.

He said the people of the Eastern Cape were not abandoned by chance—they were failed by a government that has allowed the SANDF to decay through years of budget cuts, mismanagement, and political indifference. Hattingh said the DA reiterates its call for a full parliamentary inquiry into the SANDF’s operational failures and demands that the President and Cabinet take immediate responsibility for the dangerous state of our national defence capabilities.

“It is time to treat the collapse of the SANDF as the national crisis it is,” he said.

Load shedding continues to be a nightmare in SA

By BAKANG MOKOTO

20 March 2025- The Democratic Alliance (DA) said the unannounced return of loadshedding will bring more economic devastation and leave families across the country in turmoil. The DA said it shares in the outrage of all South Africans at this bout of loadshedding with zero notice.

The DA spokesperson on Electricity and Energy, Kevin Mileham, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP), said they stand together in outrage. Mileham said this shows the incontrovertible need for a competitive energy generation market.

“The DA calls for Eskom’s immediate horizontal unbundling to break its monopoly and end its ongoing failure to meet South Africa’s electricity needs. South Africa needs new generation capacity to be built now. This is an immediate and pressing concern for our nation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Eskom spokesperson, Daphney Mokwena said, while they have made notable progress in their generation recovery efforts, Eskom faced the loss of five generation units before the peak period. Mokwena said consequently, Stage 2 load shedding was implemented at 6:25pm yesterday and will remain in effect until 5am today.

“We continue to prioritise planned maintenance to strengthen system reliability ahead of the winter months, while ensuring adherence to environmental and licensing conditions. In light of the ongoing system constraints, we urge the public to use electricity sparingly.

“Eskom sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused and will continue to provide updates as required,” she said.
