A man sentenced to four years imprisonment for sexual intimidation

4 November 2025- A man (26) from Kenhardt was convicted and sentenced for sexual intimidation by the Kenhardt Magistrate’s Court on 27 October 2025. The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on 20 November 2024 at approximately 04:40 in Dassierand, Kenhardt, when the accused, Richard Roberts, sexually intimidated a woman (22).

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the victim was at home when the accused arrived and knocked at her door. Shemane said upon opening, the accused pushed her inside the house and demanded to have sexual intercourse with her.

“He attempted to grab her by the arm, but the victim acted swiftly, ran out of the house and Roberts fled the scene. The victim immediately reported the incident at the local police station. A case of sexual intimidation was opened and investigated.

“On 27 October 2025, the Kenhardt Magistrate’s Court convicted and sentenced Roberts to four years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders,” he said.

Meanwhile, the ZF Mgcawu District Police Management commended Detective Constable Claudine Esau of the Kakamas Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for her diligent investigative work, which ensured that perpetrators of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) are brought to justice.

Desmond Tutu’s killer sentenced to 15 years imprisonment

17 March 2025- A man (29) who killed Desmond Tutu (25), sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Klerksdorp Regional Court. It transpired during the trial that, Tutu was with his two friends on Sunday evening, 27 February 2022, at Kanana Township, in Orkney, when the accused, Papa Madule, emerged from the nearby tavern.

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said Madule asked Tutu if he was a member of the SVK gang. Mokgwabone said although the victim replied that he was not, the accused stabbed him in the chest with a knife and then ran away.

“The police and paramedics were summoned to the scene, where the victim was declared dead. A case of murder was registered and taken by the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit for investigation, which resulted in Madule’s arrest on 3 March 2022.

“The accused was later granted R5000 bail. Following a series of court appearances, Madule was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years. The court further declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000,” he said.

Meanwhile, the acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, commended the Investigating Officer, Warrant Officer Benett Tyukatha, and the state prosecutor, advocate Cassius Mona, for working together with other stakeholders to ensure that the accused was convicted. Asaneng further stated that the sentence will serve as a warning that gangsterism and related criminality will be dealt with effectively.

A man sentenced to 26 years in prison for rape

12 March 2025- A man (18) was sentenced to 26 years by the Upington Regional Court for two counts of rape, and assault Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH). On 7 December 2022, a group of boys were sitting together near Leerkrantz, when the accused, Ghys Titus passed them.

The ZF Mgcawu District police spokesperson, Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the boys made some remarks towards him, and he retaliated. Masegela said Ghys chased them and apprehended two boys aged 10 and 11, respectively.

“He started to assault them with a steel wire and instructed them to undress. He raped the one boy, and while trying to rape the other boy, the accused noticed someone approaching, and then fled the scene on foot. A case of assault and rape was registered and allocated to Sergeant Lebogang Mokwene of the Upington Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit.

“The accused was arrested and was brought before court. Ghys was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for rape, five and six years for the two counts of assault GBH,” he said.

Meanwhile, Masegela said the ZFM District management acknowledged the excellent investigation by Mokwene.
