14 August 2025- South Africa coach Molefi Ntseki and his charges are bracing for a tough match when they face Niger in a must-win African Nations Championship (CHAN) group clash at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda, on Friday night.

The South Africans are third on the Group C standings with four points from two matches and are two points behind leaders Uganda, who have already played three games. Ntseki’s charges will be seeking maximum points if they are to ensure that they remain in control of their destiny as the group stages near their conclusion.

Second-placed Algeria faced Guinea earlier in the day in the other Group C match that could give the South Africans an idea of what they need to do later in the evening. Ntseki said they will take some important lessons to the clash against Niger after they were stretched by Guinea but still emerged 2-1 victory at the same venue on Monday.

“I think the lessons learned from that game (against Guinea), which we view as positives, include the (strong) mentality of our players and their high level of concentration, despite the fact that they were under siege for the better part of the match.

“We stuck to our discipline, we stuck to our game plan and every member of the team had to dig deep to make sure that the result ended in our favour,” he said.

Ntseki further said the most important thing was the technical discipline when we were out of possession and this was very important. He added that they carried out their technical discipline for almost 60 minutes during the game and there were turnovers in between and there were transitions for and against.

“We managed to hold onto the ball for a longer period and in between we managed to create goal scoring opportunities, and we managed to score the two goals.

“So in terms of not conceding towards the end of the game when the pressure was mounting on us, I think it was a very good lesson and also a plus for our players to show that we can still play under pressure, we can still grind out the results despite the fact that the opponents were coming at us,” said Ntseki.

Senior player and defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele said they respect every team in the tournament and would approach the West Africans with the same regard they afford to all opponents.

“For us as a team, we never underestimate anybody. We treat each game with respect and approach it with a positive mindset.

“One of the strongest components we have in our team is that we’re mentally very strong. We don’t look at the name of the country,” he said.

Mphahlele said whoever they play against, they always try and give their best because they know that they are representing their country. He said so, whether they play Niger, Sudan, or Nigeria, they can never walk onto a football pitch and think they have won the game already.

“We go out there every day to suffer, to protect the badge and to fight for our country. So, in this team, there’s never a moment where we look at the country and say it’s a small country because they haven’t won a game, and then we approach it with a negative mindset.

“We always focus and play to win. So, whether it’s Uganda, Niger, Guinea, Algeria, we go in with the same mentality,” said Mphahlele.

Meanwhile, the CHAN tournament is being held in East Africa in three countries – Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda – between 2 and 30 August 2025.

SPAR Proteas ready for challenge of Nation’s Cup

By REGINALD KANYANE

30 January 2025- The SPAR Proteas have moved from the heat and vibe of Jamaica to a chilly Britain for the Vitality Netball Nations Cup against England, Uganda, and Malawi this weekend, and head coach Jenny van Dyk believes her players are ready for the new challenge.

Van Dyk said this tour has been a great opportunity to test their resilience and mental fitness. She further said the change in climate is quite refreshing.

“We took steps on the journey from Jamaica to ensure that we did not suffer too much jet lag, like keeping the players awake at certain times. It’s never going to be easy, but we need to be able to deal with these challenges if we want to play the best in the world.

“The Nations Cup was an important part of the team’s preparations for the Commonwealth Games next year. Our first match is against Uganda on Saturday, but we are also working on our second match, against England the next day (Sunday),” said van Dyk.

She added they must be able to deal with the different styles of play. Van Dyk said the African teams have their own style and so does England, and they need to be ready to play them all.

The assistant coach, Zanele Mdodana, who was part of the last SPAR Proteas team to tour Jamaica in 2012, said there had been an incredible improvement in the way Jamaica played. Mdodana said most of their players play league netball in Australia and this has made them stronger.

“We learnt so much from playing there, even though we lost all three matches. This will help us in the Nations Cup. Our players are better because of this experience. I am excited to see the growth in the entire team,” she said.

Meanwhile, the SPAR Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane said the team was very excited about the challenge ahead.

“We haven’t had an opportunity like this since the World Cup in 2023. We want to take everything we learnt in Jamaica and implement it. The team would not be affected by the support for the England team.

“Nothing can compare to Jamaica – the vuvuzelas, the pot lids being banged, the general noise. We couldn’t hear the instructions from our coaches. But in England, the arenas are bigger, and the noise won’t be as intense,” said Chawane.

She said the team’s mindset of always wanting to win had not been affected by the losses to Jamaica. Chawane said this team will always fight to the end.

Bross: “We have to beat Uganda”

By REGINALD KANYANE

15 November 2024 – Bafana Bafana have qualified for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) without kicking a ball. The South African senior men’s national team arrived in Kampala, Uganda, on Thursday ahead of their AFCON qualifier against the hosts on Friday and was preparing to go to training when word reached the camp about developments in South Sudan that would have implications in Group K.

The Sudanese pulled off a stunning feat that would have repercussions in Group K after they beat Congo Brazzaville 3-2 in another group match on Thursday, in a result that enabled both Bafana Bafana and Uganda to qualify for the tournament, while sitting in their respective hotels in Kampala.

Broos’ charges can now go into their qualifier against the Ugandans at the multipurpose Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Friday with a spring in their step after securing back-to-back qualification to the AFCON.

While the South Africa camp celebrated the win, Broos said they would not pop the champagne bottles yet and would still go full throttle in the matches against Uganda today and against the self-same South Sudan in Cape Town on 19 November 2024.

“We want to win the game, we want to win to end top of the group and that means we have to beat Uganda. So (qualifying) does not change anything for us.

“I hope that it will be a nice game and a good game. It will be a full house, and there will be a lot of atmosphere inside the stadium. This is motivation for the players and let us hope that the best team wins today,” he said.

Bafana Bafana captain, Ronwen Williams said: “We want to finish the year on a positive note. We have had a wonderful year, a successful year, so we want to keep building on that. It is going to be a tough one (against Uganda), we are excited. The week has been amazing, we have got some of the players back who have been injured and that is good. We lost some of our players (due to injury) and we will be playing on their behalf as well because they have been on this journey with us. It has been a long journey, and we are proud of our achievement getting to AFCON back-to-back.”

Meanwhile, the South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan congratulated the team after they qualified for the next AFCON with two games to spare.

“Congratulations to coach Hugo Broos, his technical and support staff, the players and everybody who contributes to the team. This is a magnificent feat to have qualified for the next AFCON in the same year that Bafana Bafana won the bronze medal at the tournament held in Côte d’Ivoire from 13 January – 11 February 2024. On behalf of the SAFA NEC, congratulations to the team,” said Jordaan.
