The best gift to give former president Nelson Mandela on his 94th birthday would be to act like him, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said on Monday.

“The greatest gift our nation could possibly give uTata Nelson Mandela for his 94th birthday this week would be to emulate his magnanimity and grace,” Tutu said.

“Mr Mandela taught us to love ourselves, to love one another and to love our country. He laid the table so that all South Africans could eat; we must ensure all members of the family are invited.”

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has responded to a Capetonian who stated publicly that she will turn her back on her Jewish roots because of the policies of the Israeli government.

In a letter to the Cape Times earlier this week, journalist Moira Levy

said because of Israel’s recent “violent racial repression”, she had cut ties with her past, legacy and family roots “and, painful as it is, turn my back on being a Jew”.
