The road between Koster and Derby, R509 in the North West has been closed following a collision between a truck and a train carrying 29 700 kilogram of LP gas.
The accident happened on Friday, 15 June 2012 at about 03:00 earlier hours of the morning. This occurred after the gas spilled on the road and the railway line.
The two trucks were travelling on R509 road when they collided with each other when they tried to avoid potholes as the road is dilapidated with dongas of pot holes.
According to the information received, after the collision one of the trucks carrying frozen chickens landed on the railway line.
“The driver and a passenger managed to escape before the truck was hit by a goods train with 12 carriages. The train derailed from the railway line” Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.
The driver and passenger of the truck as well as the driver of the train were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
No visible injuries were detected. The driver of other truck that carried beers which was involved in the first collision, did not sustain any injuries.
A case of reckless and negligence driving has been opened.
The police urge motorists to use alternative routes and be patient while the accident has been cleared.
