North West Provincial Legislature to Host House Sitting to Debate on Human Rights Day and Social Cluster MECs Reply to Oral Questions

16 March 2026 – The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature (NWPL), Dr Desbo Mohono will hold a Legislature House Sitting, where Members of all Political Parties represented in the Legislature will Debate on the Human Rights Day and Members of the Executive Council (MECs) from the Social Cluster (Department of Social Development, Department of Health, Department of Education and Department of Community Safety and Transport Management) will respond to Oral Questions sent by Members.

Mohono said the house sitting will be held in the Legislature Chamber at 9am. She said the Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN) Supreme Council will also be present at the sitting as part of their official two-day visit (17-18 March 2026) to the Legislature aimed at strengthening cooperation between democratic governance structures such as Legislature, North West Provincial Government and Traditional Authorities.

“The proceedings of the House Sitting will be streamed live on the Legislature’s Facebook page,” said Mohono.

13 March 2026- The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature (NWPL), Dr Desbo Mohono will host Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi and the Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN) Supreme Council during an official visit to the North West Provincial Legislature in Mahikeng on 17–18 March 2026. Mohono said the visit marks a significant engagement between the Provincial Legislature and one of South Africa’s most prominent traditional leadership institutions and is expected to strengthen cooperation between democratic governance structures and traditional authorities.

She further said during the two-day visit, the Royal Bafokeng Nation delegation will receive an institutional briefing on the constitutional mandate and functioning of the Provincial Legislature, while also engaging with Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) on matters relating to governance, legislative processes and development initiatives affecting communities within the North West. Mohono added that the visit forms part of the Legislature’s commitment to fostering collaboration between democratic institutions and traditional leadership structures in advancing development and improving the lives of communities across the province.

Mokgosi to response to 2026 SOPA Debate

9 March 2026- The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature (NWPL), Dr Desbo Mohono will preside over a Legislature House Sitting, where the North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi will respond to the 2026 State of the Province Address (SOPA) debate in the Legislature Chamber on 10 March 2026 at 9am.

The debate where Members of Political Parties represented in the Legislature participated was held on 3 March 2026, in the Chamber. The proceedings of the House Sitting will be streamed live on the Legislature Facebook page.

2 March 2026- The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature (NWPL), Dr Desbo Mohono will hold a Legislature House Sitting, where members of all political parties represented in the Legislature will debate the State of the Province Address (SOPA) 2026 in the Legislature Chamber at 9am.

Mohono said SOPA was delivered by the North West Premier, Lazarus Mokgosi on 26 February 2026, during the official opening of the Legislature. She said the proceedings of the House Sitting will be streamed live on the Legislature’s Facebook page.

Ad Hoc Committee formed to investigate allegations levelled against North West Premier, Lazarus Mokgosi to commence with its work

11 November 2025- The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature (NWPL), Dr Desbo Mohono has in terms of Rule 187 of the Standing Rules of the NPWL, appointed an Ad Hoc Committee in consultation with represented political parties in the Legislature. Mohono said the appointment was pursuant to the allegations that were made by the embattled Naledi Local Municipality mayor, Clifton Groep against the North West Premier, Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi.

She further said Nathan Oliphant was elected as the Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee, Tebogo Modise, as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee, Paul Sebegoe, as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee, Kgalalelo Makgokgowa, as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee, Ofentse Moema, as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee and Christiaan Jacobus Steyl, as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee. Mohono added that Lerato Tsholo was also appointed as a member of the Ad Hoc Committee.

“Other members who have been appointed as alternate members of the Ad Hoc Committee are Karabo Magagane, Sipho Dial, Papiki Babuile and Freddy Sonakile. The Ad Hoc Committee’s Terms of Reference are to investigate, inquire into, make findings, report and make recommendations to me.

“Adv Pule Seleka SC has been appointed by the North West Provincial Legislature to serve as evidence leader to the Ad Hoc Committee, with M.E. Tlou Attorneys Inc, providing support to the evidence leader,” she said.

Mohono said work has commenced, starting with identifying potential witnesses to adduce evidence. She said the public hearings will be held from 24 until 27 November 2025, and will be streamed live on the North West Provincial Legislature’s Facebook page (@NWPLegislature). She said the venue for the public hearings will be announced soon.

“However, the times for the hearings will be from 9am until 1pm and 2pm to 6pm on the above-mentioned dates,” said Mohono.
