Partnership between NCPG and Kumba Iron Ore signifies culmination of extensive engagements

5 November 2025- The Northern Cape Premier, Dr Zamani Saul said they met with the CEO of Kumba Iron Ore, Mpumi Zikalala for the ceremonial handover of the land parcel for the Kathu Industrial Park Development. Saul said the land parcel is 91ha estimated at R62 Million.

He further said the ceremonial handover comes after the signing of the land donation agreement, which marked the formal initiation of the transfer process, a critical step in unlocking the next phase of the Kathu Industrial Park’s Development. Saul added that it represents a landmark moment in the province’s industrialisation and economic diversification journey.

“This milestone signifies the culmination of extensive engagements between Kumba Iron Ore, NCEDA, and the Northern Cape Provincial Government, aimed at establishing a dedicated industrial hub to service the region’s mining and beneficiation ecosystem. As part of this process, Kumba Iron Ore has made strategically located land available towards the development of the Industrial Park.

“The initiative aligns directly with the Northern Cape Industrial Corridor Development Framework, which positions the Kathu node as a strategic centre for value addition, mineral beneficiation, and supply chain integration in support of mining operations across the broader corridor,” he said.

Saul said Kumba Iron Ore Company remains a strategic anchor partner, whose leadership in facilitating the land donation demonstrates a shared vision for inclusive and sustainable growth. He said their contribution will serve as an enabler for further investment from both public and private sector partners, ensuring that the park evolves into a multi-industry ecosystem built on innovation, beneficiation, and shared prosperity.

“The project also positions the Northern Cape Provincial Government through the Northern Cape Economic Development, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (NCEDA) to leverage additional partnerships with other key role players.

“The Northern Cape Provincial Government remains committed to working with the Private Sector to ensure that we create jobs for the people of the province,” said Saul.

Saul to lead Provincial Heritage Day commemoration

23 September 2025- The Northern Cape Premier, Dr Zamani Saul will lead the Provincial Heritage Day Commemoration, a significant event aimed at celebrating the province’s cultural richness and shared heritage. Saul said the commemoration will take place on Wednesday, at the Robert Gunda Stadium in Paballelo, Upington and will run from 8am until 3pm.

He further said held under the theme “Reimagine Our Heritage Institutions for a New Era,” the event will feature a dynamic programme that reflects the diverse traditions, identities, and histories that shape the Northern Cape. Saul added that he will deliver the keynote address and will be joined by Members of the Executive Council (MECs), the Executive Mayor of Dawid Kruiper Municipality and the Executive Mayor of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality.

“The day promises to be a vibrant celebration of unity, inclusion and the evolving role of heritage institutions in modern society. The Provincial Heritage Day Commemoration, which will feature a programme highlighting the province’s cultural richness and shared history.

“The day will include key details such as the ceremonial renaming of Schroder Street to Alfred Qayiso Gubula Street. The proceedings will begin with the official announcement of the renaming of Schroder Street, this is an act of restorative justice and symbolic transformation of public spaces,” he said.

Saul said the official Heritage Day Ceremony is a celebration of their rich cultural diversity, unity in heritage and reflection on the evolving role of cultural institutions in the 21st century. He said the opening of the Northern Cape Provincial Indigenous Games will be immediately following the ceremony.

“We will also launch the 2025 Northern Cape Provincial Indigenous Games, taking place from 24–26 September 2025. These traditional games serve as an expression of our living heritage, promoting intergenerational learning and cultural pride.

“The media are invited to attend, cover, and amplify this important commemoration as the province celebrates Heritage Day by promoting unity, cultural diversity, and the rich heritage that shapes our shared identity,” said Saul.

Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul to lead Provincial Women’s Day Commemorative event

6 August 2025- The Northern Cape Premier, Dr Zamani Saul will lead the Provincial Women’s Day Commemorative event, which is set to take place on 9 August 2025 at the Bongani High School in Douglas. The commemoration will take place under the theme: “Building Resilient Economies for All”.

Saul spokesperson, Naledi Gaosekwe said this year’s commemoration marks two major milestones. Gaosekwe said it marks the 69th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings and the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s official National Women’s Day.

“These milestones reaffirm our collective responsibility to continue the fight for gender equality, socio-economic inclusion and the empowerment of women in all spheres of society. Members of the Executive Council (MECs) as well as the Executive Mayors of the Pixley Ka

Seme District Municipality and Siyancuma Local Municipality will join Saul.

“As we gather in Douglas, we do so not only to celebrate but also to honour the strength, courage and contributions of women – past, present, and future. This event will also shine a spotlight on the vital role played by women in Douglas and the wider Pixley Ka Seme District, particularly in the areas of economic development, leadership and social cohesion,” she said.

Gaosekwe further said the commemoration is important and the province will continue to promote the rights, dignity and empowerment of women across all sectors of society.

Saul to visit families of neglected patients at RMSH and NCMHH

5 August 2025- The Northern Cape Premier, Dr Zamani Saul said he has noted the report on the investigation conducted by Prof Taole Mokoena and his team. Saul said the report released last week by the Health Ombudsman has brought to the fore the major governance inadequacies, violation of clinical protocols and financial mismanagement at both the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital and the Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital.

He further said all these discrepancies have cost families their loved ones. Saul added that he sends his most heartfelt condolences to the families mentioned in the Ombudsman report. 

“We unequivocally apologise to the many patients who have experienced substandard health services at both institutions. I will soon visit the affected families, having studied the report and after a number of consultations, I have instructed that the Director General of the province, Justice Bekebeke, chair the task team that has been set up to ensure full implementation of the recommendations by the Health Ombudsman.

“I have also instructed the Northern Cape MEC for Health, Maruping Lekwene to within 7 days, provide me with an update on the immediate actions to be taken as recommended by the Health Ombudsman in its report,” he said.

Saul said upon assuming office in 2019, he prioritised Public Health and Public Education. He said in an effort to improve the two sectors, bulk of the provincial budget and adequate support is given to the two departments and this is evident in the Human Development Indicators.

“It is therefore important that in light of the damning report by the Press Ombudsman corrective actions are instituted as a matter of urgency. I wish to reiterate the government’s commitment to transparency and clean governance as well as reforms in the public health system.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that our public health facilities function optimally as more than 80% of the people of this province cannot afford private healthcare and are solely dependent on government facilities,” said Saul.

RSA President, Cyril Ramaphosa to visit Northern Cape

16 July 2025- The Northern Cape Premier, Dr Zamani Saul said he is pleased to announce a visit by the President of the country, Cyril Ramaphosa to the province later this month. Saul said Ramaphosa will be accompanied by Members of the National Cabinet for a meeting with the Provincial Executive Council.

He further said this visit forms part of a commitment by Ramaphosa in the 2024 Presidency Budget Vote to work closely with provincial and local governments to address service delivery challenges. Saul added that the visit aims to engage with the Premier, Members of the Executive Council, and the Executive Mayors of the five District Municipalities on programmes being implemented in the province by various government departments and municipalities.

“This aligns with Section 154 of the Constitution, which requires National and Provincial governments to support and strengthen the capacity of local government to carry out its functions. This will be a significant occasion, as the entire Cabinet will be visiting the province. We view this as a very important and historic visit.

“The Northern Cape Provincial Government would be allowed an opportunity to engage the President and Cabinet on the state of the Northern Cape and its constituent municipalities. Deliberations will focus on Inter-Governmental support and interventions where it is needed, as well as reflecting on challenges and opportunities that exist for inclusive economic growth, job creation and improving service delivery,” he said.

Saul said in addition, it is also expected that the Cabinet will engage and propose solutions to the Northern Cape Provincial Government to be jointly focused on. He said they are looking forward to the outcomes of this meeting and they are confident that those outcomes will propel the provincial administration to greater heights and set the province on a progressive developmental trajectory in advancing the vision of a modern, growing and successful province and positioning the province as South Africa’s new growth front.

“The meeting is scheduled to take place on 25 July 2025 in Kimberley,” said Saul.

Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul expands his cabinet

21 January 2025- The Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul has expanded his cabinet. Saul said in his capacity as Premier, his foremost commitment is to ensure that his government is strategically positioned to deliver services effectively and address the pressing needs of the communities.

He further said in light of this commitment, he is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Members to the Executive Council (MECs), effective immediately. Saul added that this decision follows an extensive period of consultation, rigorous evaluation and a clear assessment of how best to align their leadership structure with the challenges and opportunities before them.

“The rationale for expanding the Executive Council is straightforward and compelling- to enhance the capacity of this government to meet its mandate

and accelerate progress on our strategic priorities.

“These appointments are not merely about adding positions, but about strategically positioning expertise where it is most needed to drive meaningful change,” he said.

Saul said as they are facing increasingly complex demands in service delivery, it is imperative to have a leadership team that is not only diverse and capable, but also firmly committed to achieving the goals of a modern, growing, and successful Northern Cape. He said the two appointees embody this vision and bring with them proven track records of excellence, dedication, and an unwavering focus on public service.

“Mangaliso Matika has been appointed to lead the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture. His mandate will include driving the transformation of this critical sector, ensuring that our cultural heritage is preserved, and promoting the diverse artistic and linguistic richness of our province.

“His extensive experience positions him as the ideal leader to advance initiatives that uplift and unite our communities,” said Saul.

He said Limakatso Koloi will assume leadership of the Department of Transport, Safety, and Liaison. Saul said her role is pivotal in fostering a secure environment and advancing mobility for the people of the Northern Cape.

“Her extensive background and commitment to safety and infrastructure development make her an invaluable addition to the Executive Council.

Both appointments reflect my administration’s dedication to responsive and results-driven governance.

“I am confident that their leadership will significantly enhance our collective ability to deliver on the priorities that matter most to our citizens. The swearing-in of the new MECs by Judge Pule Tlaletsi, Judge President of the Northern Cape High Court Division, will take place at 12pm today.

“I wish them both success in their new roles and look forward to the positive impact they will make as we continue our work to build a brighter future for the Northern Cape,” he said.

Northern Cape Premier Wishes Learners, Teachers, and SGBs Well for the 2025 Academic Year

15 January 2025 – The Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul, extends his best wishes to all learners, teachers, School Governing Bodies (SGBs), and communities as they embark on the 2025 academic year. Saul emphasizes that education is a societal responsibility that requires collective effort.

According to Saul’s spokesperson, Naledi Gaosekwe, the Premier will kick off the Northern Cape Provincial Government (NCPG) Back-to-School campaign. As part of this initiative, Saul will visit Khiba Secondary School in Gamopedi, located in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District. He will be accompanied by the District Mayor, Queen Mogatle-Thaone.

“The Northern Cape Provincial Government’s Back-to-School Campaign aims to ensure that all teachers and learners arrive in class on time and begin their learning activities on the first day of school. Through this campaign, the government will confirm that everything is in place for the academic year,” said Gaosekwe.

She further noted that Saul’s government is committed to collaborating with its social partners to invest in initiatives that enhance access to quality basic education. This includes upgrades to school facilities, the construction of new schools, the expansion of modern digital learning opportunities, and the provision of additional resources for students in need.

Additionally, Saul encourages those who faced challenges in the previous year to take advantage of all opportunities provided by the government for a second chance.

Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul lauds Class of 2024

14 January 2025- The Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul said his government has recorded a number of milestones in 2024. Saul, who delivered a keynote address during the release of provincial 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results on 14 January 2025 in Kimberley.

He further said as a province, they received the highest number of clean audits, 8 clean audits in total. Saul added that they have achieved this by putting proper systems in place in an effort to enhance accountability and transparency.

“We also managed to create a huge number of jobs last year. In the first three quarters of the year, we created 27 000 jobs. This, we managed to achieve due to the initiatives rolled out by the provincial government with our key stakeholders.

“Last year, amongst our key highlights for the year is the matric results that we are celebrating here today. We broke an all-time record by receiving 84.2%. So for the provincial government, 2024 was a good year and we are working towards an even better year in 2025,” he said.

Saul said reaching many little milestones that might seem insignificant for some, but for them and the people of the Northern Cape, it is the little milestones that count. He said although they will do it again when they enter the hall, allow him to, on behalf of the Northern Cape Provincial Government (NCPG) to congratulate the top three learners and their parents for the sterling performance last year.

“Kutlo Motlhoioa (Kimberley Technical High School), Petrus Nel (Duineveld High School) and Kutlo Motshwana (Galaletsang High School). You have made us proud. We sincerely wish you well in your future endeavour and look forward to welcoming you back into the province to come and help us build a Northern Cape we are all proud of.

“Today, we can proudly state that we are reaping the rewards of years of investment into a system that we believe can change the Northern Cape. You will remember that in 2019, The Northern Cape Provincial Government (NCPG) took a conscious decision to prioritise Health and Education,” said Saul.

He said they will not be able to attain their vision of modernising, growing and making the Northern Cape a successful province, if they do not educate the young people. Saul said they went out galvanising support from their key stakeholders to help them improve the education system. 

“The annual release of the matric results provides us with the opportunity to benchmark our education system against national standards. It further allows us to give recognition to our top achievers, who have excelled academically and prepare for their tertiary education.

“The Class of 2024 has done remarkably well and exceeded our expectations. This is also an indication that our education system in the province has stabilised and we are witnessing a gradual improvement in our matric results year on year,” he said.

Meanwhile, a total of 179 978 answered scripts were marked by 839 markers, 45 chief markers and 45 internal moderators. The quality assurer, Umalusi found that they have sound systems in place and the whole examination process was conducted with integrity.
