‘SA Tourism a sinking ship’

By REGINALD KANYANE

14 August 2025- The Minister of Tourism, Patricia De Lille, has noted information in the public domain regarding the precautionary suspension of the CEO of the South African Tourism, Nombulelo Guliwe by the SA Tourism board.

De Lille said according to the legal advice, this decision by the SA Tourism Board is unlawful.

She further said as of 31 July 2025, the South African Tourism Board, does not have a Board Chairperson following the resignation of Professor Gregory Davids. De Lille added that this means the board in its current form is not properly constituted to take such a resolution.

“However, we remain committed to ensure the adherence to sound governance principles at South African Tourism and will address the above with the board,” said de Lille.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson on Tourism and Member of Parliament (MP), Haseena Ismail said they have called on de Lille to urgently account to Parliament following the precautionary suspension of Guliwe.

Ismail said instead of focusing on the serious allegations against Guliwe, she has focused on whether the Board had the authority to suspend her without a Chairperson, a distraction that risks letting the CEO off the hook.

“The DA is committed to due process. However, it cannot be that the Minister attacks the board while giving no attention to serious allegations against the CEO.

“This forms part of an unfortunate pattern, where the Minister has abdicated responsibility for disciplinary issues in her Department, only intervening once the damage is done,” she said.

Ismail said SA Tourism, which takes up the vast majority of the Department’s budget, has been a consistent problem for tourism in South Africa. She said despite overspending on its already significant budget, it failed to meet 11% of its performance targets last year.

“These are not the hallmarks of an agency in good health. We cannot allow yet another year of underperformance from SA Tourism, at the expense of other job-creating programmes like Working on Tourism.

“Three years of acting CEOs, from 2021 to 2024, significantly destabilised the entity. The Minister must act quickly to steady the ship, by allowing an independent, transparent, and swift investigation to take place, and taking action accordingly,” said Ismail.

She said the DA is in government to fight for jobs and growth. Ismail said tourism is vital to both and if de Lille would not make sure their entities are working, they will.

Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille calls for accuracy and balanced reporting about SA

By BAKANG MOKOTO

4 June 2025- The Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille said she noted the recent update by the United States Department of State to its travel advisory for South Africa. De Lille said they respect the sovereign right of all nations to provide guidance to their citizens travelling abroad.

She further said they also acknowledge the recent meeting between Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa and Donald Trump and the subsequent media coverage that has followed. De Lille added that, however, it is important to offer broader context and reaffirm their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety, comfort and enjoyment of all visitors to their country.

“South Africa remains one of the most sought-after and rewarding travel destinations in the world- known for its natural beauty, cultural diversity, and the warm hospitality of its people.

“While challenges such as crime exist, as they do in many countries globally, the overwhelming majority of international visitors travel safely and leave with positive, enriching experiences. Visitor safety is, and continues to be, a national priority,” she said.

De Lille said it is actively addressed through a range of coordinated efforts between government, law enforcement, the tourism sector and local communities. She said their tourism infrastructure remains robust and resilient, with several established safety measures, including increased security presence in key tourism nodes, supported by trained Tourism Monitors stationed at popular attractions and visitor hotspots.

“This includes the ongoing collaboration between government, law enforcement and the private sector to ensure proactive safety monitoring and swift incident response. It is worth highlighting that travel demand from the United States remains robust.

“In 2024, arrivals from the U.S. returned to pre-pandemic levels and the United States surpassed the United Kingdom as South Africa’s largest source market. In the first four months of 2025 alone, South Africa welcomed 111,491 visitors from the USA — reaffirming the destination’s enduring appeal and strong market confidence,” said de Lille.

She said they understand that travellers may have concerns, and they encourage all visitors to exercise the same level of vigilance and awareness they would when visiting any international destination. De Lille said they also call on media outlets and government agencies globally to report on South Africa with accuracy and balance, recognising the distinction between isolated incidents and the broader reality experienced by millions of safe and satisfied travellers.

“We are engaging closely with the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation on this matter and wish to reassure all travellers that South Africa remains open, welcoming, and committed to ensuring a safe and pleasurable journey for all who visit.

“We look forward to continuing to welcome travellers from the United States and across the globe, to share in the richness of our landscapes, the depth of our culture, and the warmth of our people,” she said.

Tourism partners host Africa’s travel Indaba Media launch

By BAKANG MOKOTO

23April 2025- The Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille said the 2025 edition of Africa’s Travel Indaba is one of the most powerful platforms for collaboration, innovation, and transformation for tourism during the official Media Launch of the 2025 Africa’s Travel Indaba held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban today. De Lille said KwaZulu-Natal is not just a province, but a mirror of the continent’s warmth, resilience and potential.

She further said South African Tourism officially launched its latest global brand campaign, ‘South Africa Awaits — Come Find Your Joy!’— a celebration of the country’s boundless energy, rich culture, and extraordinary experiences. De Lille added that this dynamic campaign invites travellers to rediscover their sense of wonder, embracing the joy that travel to South Africa can unlock.

“In this spirit, we cannot wait to welcome various delegates from across Africa and around the globe to the eThekwini Metro in the province of KwaZulu-Natal for this year’s Africa’s Travel Indaba trade show.

“The theme for Africa’s Travel Indaba “Unlimited Africa,” is not just a slogan – it is the essence of this all-important gathering because Africa’s Travel Indaba is not just a trade show. It is a celebration of who we are,” she said.

De Lille said a declaration of what they believe. She said it is a declaration that they want to think and act without limits.

“It is a bold manifestation of the African tourism sector that we, together, are further developing and fulfilling our true potential. To speak of “Unlimited Africa” is to believe in an Africa unbound by stereotype, unhindered by the past, and unleashed in its full potential.

“It means imagining a continent where tourism is not just about visitors but about value. Not just about destinations, but about dignity. Not just about business, but about belonging,” said De Lille.

She said it means seeing themselves not through the lens of others, but through their own proud, radiant perspective – and reflecting that to the world.

Africa’s Travel Indaba: Economic Impact

De Lille said Africa’s Travel Indaba is more than an event. She said it is their collective voice and stories echoing across the globe.

“From its origins over four decades ago as a local platform, Indaba has grown into the most vibrant travel marketplace on the African continent. In 2024 alone, over 9000 delegates walked the halls of the Indaba. Over 1200 exhibitors shared their dreams and 24 000 business meetings turned ideas into action.

“R226 million in direct economic activity was generated right here in Durban, with another R333 million rippling across KwaZulu-Natal. Behind these numbers are real lives, more than 1000 jobs created, opportunities unlocked for youth, for students, and for entrepreneurs from all walks of life,” said De Lille.

She said through funding from the Department of Tourism, 120 SMMEs were empowered to showcase their offerings and access the global stage through our Market Access Support Programme. De Lille said this is what inclusive growth looks like.

“This is a transformation in motion. This is what it means to leave no one behind. As we go into Africa’s Travel Indaba 2025, we currently have participation from 26 African countries including South Africa.

“We have also seen consistent interest in the number of tourism products from across the continent. With over 1200 exhibitors currently confirmed, this includes 297 tourism products, demonstrating confidence in the event as a marketplace for African experiences,” she said.

De Lille said this also reflects their success in positioning Indaba as a truly pan-African event. She said notably, their floor space is completely sold out, signalling increased demand and enthusiasm from exhibitors.

“A total of 908 buyers have been vetted and approved, with 7 430 meetings already confirmed on the Indaba online diary platform. Interest is surging from major markets including the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and India.

“In fact, a total of 55 countries are represented in our buyer profile. As we go to Africa’s Travel Indaba, there is much about South Africa to be celebrated and highlighted as is the case for the rest of the African continent. For example, today we are here at Moses Mabhida stadium recognising the value sport plays not only in our economy but the tourism sector too,” said de Lille.

Department of Tourism strengthen its ties with China

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

17 March 2025- The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Maggie Makhotso Sotyu said the Republic of South Africa and the People of Republic of China have a special bond that ties them together. Sotyu said the Chinese community’s history with South Africa dates back to the 1800s and is considered as an integral part of the society, and contributes significantly to the cultural and economic landscape.

She further said the prestige gathering they had is not only a reflection of the strong ties between Africa and China, but also a recognition of the vital role that women play in shaping industries, particularly in tourism. Sotyu added that the tourism sector remains a powerful driver of economic growth, job creation, and cultural exchange.

“However, for it to reach its full potential, we must ensure that women, who make up the majority of the tourism workforce, are given equal opportunities to lead, innovate, and thrive.

“In South Africa, we are committed to fostering gender equity within tourism, and I am proud to highlight several key initiatives that align with the vision of tourism,” she said.

Sotyu said Tourism is more than just showcasing landmarks. She said it is about storytelling, authenticity, and cultural exchange.

“Through our Cultural Immersion Programme for South African Tourist Guides, we are equipping our guides with skills and knowledge to create meaningful experiences for Chinese visitors, ensuring they gain a deeper understanding of our diverse heritage.

“This initiative strengthens our commitment to service excellence and ensures that tourists leave with not only beautiful memories but also a rich appreciation of our history and traditions,” said Sotyu.

She said it is important to inform the public that the implementation of the cultural Immersion programme for South African tourist guides and departmental officials in China took place in October 2024. Sotyu said given the growing significance of the Chinese Market to global tourism, her department identified Mandarin Language proficiency as a strategic opportunity for tourist guides.

“The department has taken steps to enhance the skills of South African tourist guides by implementing the Mandarin Language Programme. Since its inception, in 2019, to date, a number of guides have successfully passed the Hanyu Shuipin Kaoshi (HSK) exams at level 1 as part of phase1) and 2 as part of phase 2 respectively, reaching a proficiency that allows them to offer tours in Mandarin.

“A total of 22 tourist guides were recommended for phase 3 to visit China last October. I am sure that you would agree when I say this was a wonderful initiative that will ensure that South African tour guides can better meet the needs of Chinese tourists and provide them with memorable experiences,” she said.

Sotyu said to further encourage Chinese visitors to visit the shores, the South African government announced a ground-breaking Trusted Tour Operator Scheme which significantly eases the process and allows for a seamless visa application process for Chinese travellers and tour operators.

She said this scheme is truly a massive win for the tourism and business events sector.

“The Department of Tourism uses the new visa initiatives as enablers to grow tourism arrivals to South Africa which will in turn drive inclusive economic growth and job creation.

“It is also crucial to recognise the women in the tourism sector who face unique challenges, from access to funding and training to leadership opportunities. And it is for this reason that the Department of Tourism projects are designed to provide skills development, mentorship, and financial support to women entrepreneurs in the industry,” said Sotyu.
