The Directorate of Public Safety in the City of Matlosana together with Local Economic Development (LED) Directorate, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District (DKK) Environmental Department and other external stakeholders such as South African Police Service (SAPS) and Home Affairs, continued with the Clean-Up Campaign that was launched in May 2024.

The City of Matlosana spokesperson, Ntswaki Makgetha said the operation focuses on compliance of businesses within the Klerksdorp CBD on regulations and safety standards.

“During the compliance processes, City Mall was found not to be compliant, indicating a risk of the building. According to the Building Inspectors, the Mall building needed to be closed immediately as the contractor did not comply with the National Building Regulations Act.

Assistant Director of Fire and Rescue , Steven Mpato, confirmed that as per the Disaster Risk Management Act 57 of 2002 and the South African National Standard Act 10400, which reduces the risk of disaster, the City Mall is temporarily closed with immediate effect and everyone was expected to vacate the building,” she said.

Makgetha said the City of Matlosana will update the community as the investigation unfolds.
