Taung- A case against six suspects from Morokweng village, near Taung was remanded until 12 May 2015.

Johannes Luka, Molefi Dintwe, Ezekiel Staal, Boitumelo Moroke, Kgari Puoeng and Elizabeth Staal briefly appeared before Taung Magistrates Court after they allegedly burnt down a kraal of stock-theft suspect, Marumo Legakwe(48) from Morokweng village, in Taung.

The community members went berserk after Taung Magistrates Court granted Marumo Legakwe and Kwazulu-Natal born suspect, Nicholas Hlela(38).

The two suspects were arrested two months ago at Morokweng village after being accused of stock-theft.

According to residents, Legakwe and Hlela were beaten to the gulp after they were caught red-handed with 31 stolen goats by observant residents at around 04h00am.

The 31 goats were found loaded in Hlela’s bakkie.

Legakwe was deposed from Morokweng village by community members last month where he had close to 200 goats.

The community burnt his kraal and ordered his family to move out of their village.

Six suspects were subsequently arrested in connection of burning Legakwe’s kraal.

The two briefly appeared before court and were granted R1000 bail each against the residents’ will.

On Friday (20 March 2015) the community allegedly went to his kraal and reduced it to ashes.

Morokweng chief, Monnatau Molehe said the decision was taken by community members, so as he is a leader he adhered to the call.

“I can say this man arrived here more than four years in tour village. When he arrived here, he asked to stay only for two days but after two days he refused to go.

“The community wanted him out because he was stealing their livestock, now he has been arrested. They decided to burn down his kraal and remove his livestock out of the village” Molehe said.

One of accused, Boitumelo Moroke said he does not agree with justice system because they trying to fight crime in the area, but instead of the court to prosecute the perpetrators, are the ones being arrested.

“I can never understand the justice system. We fighting crime in the area and now we’re now those who facing jail-time. I was never part of those who burnt the kraal” Moroke said.
