Sundowns could dump 10 players

BY Lovemore Moyo

Mamelodi Sundowns will reshuffle their squad again, with up to 10 players to leave or be loaned out – including all three foreigners not in the first team.

Sundowns are keen to offload many of the reserve team players with first-team contracts.

Word is that Nigerian midfielder Solomon Okpako, who has battled for regular game-time since joining at the beginning of the season, will be part of that list.

Also due to leave though on loan is Zimbabwean striker Simba Sithole who has battled to break through into the team despite being registered as one of the club’s five foreigners this season.

Fellow Zimbabwean Lionel Mutizwa, whose injury at the beginning of the season led to him not being registered, will also be let go, although there have to be negotiations about his contract, which is still running.
The duo of Tshepo Ramokala and Lucky Nguzana will definitely leave at the end of the season.

The club is also considering letting go of Innocent Mdledle, while the interest in out-of-favour defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele might tempt the club to let him go.

Mphahlele has attracted the attention of Platinum Stars, SuperSport United and Bloemfontein Celtic.

Further word from within the club is that one “big name player” could be let go if the club finds a way of selling him, as he is no longer giving his best for the club.

The player in question has not made as much of a contribution as was expected this season, with his body language reportedly “no longer being that of a hungry player”.

Neeskens: Anything can happen

Johan Neeskens @ Backpagepix

Mamelodi Sundowns mentor, Johan Neeskens has warned that it might be too quick for anyone to claim bragging rights to the Absa Premiership trophy this season.

Neeskens was speaking ahead of their crucial encounter against rivals Supersport United on Saturday at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in an all important Absa Premiership Tshwane derby.

After the defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in their previous league clash, the Dutch legend believes that his men are mentally prepared and focused to win the Tshwane derby.

“If you look at the league table, we are three points behind Orlando pirates and two behind Moroka Swallows, football is a funny game and anything can happen, “he added boldly.

“In order to contest for trophies, you have to defeat those who are also challenging for honours.”

The Absa Premiership Tshwane derby

“Supersport United are playing great football lately and we have to be careful because we want to win all of our remaining games.

“This match is also going to be played at an intense pace because both teams stand an outside chance of winning the league so it is not going to be easy.

“Both teams have got great players and will be facing each other in two weeks time in the Nedbank Cup final so trust me it is not a walk in the park for anyone, “the 60 year old said.

Sundowns camp news

‘’We have nine players who are sitting on two yellow cards and a few side-lined due to injuries.

“We welcome back Ellias Pelembe and Hlompho Kekana back from suspension, so overall we have players who can do the job on Saturday so depth is not a problem.” he added.

Pressure ahead of the Derby

“If my boys are playing well, credit must be given to them, because they are the ones that have done the hard work.

“Yes we stared the league on a high and took a dip during the season, but that’s football as a coach it is my duty to motivate my boys, because we all want to achieve our own personal objectives,” he concluded.

Trio share Sundowns award

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Player of the Month for April has been shared by three players.

Sandilands: I’m not to blame!!!

Courtesy of http://www.kickoff.com

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands says they let themselves down badly in the 2-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium last night.

Sundowns went into the match needing a win to draw level with Orlando Pirates at the top of the League standings, but delivered a below-par performance as goals from Sthembiso Ngcobo and Siphiwe Tshabalala ruined the party.

Sandilands himself was seemingly directly at fault for the first goal – running past Shabba’s long ball to gift Ngcobo the opener – though he insists the blame can’t lay with him.

“We definitely let ourselves down because if it wasn’t for that first goal we would have at least got a point,” Sandilands tells KickOff.com

“I’m not to blame for that first goal because I made a correct decision by coming out. Perhaps I took my eyes of the ball, but even then the ball was not far from Siyanda [Xulu].

“But overall I think we didn’t create enough scoring opportunities because I don’t remember [Itumeleng] Khune diving for a shot at goal.”

Sundowns are nowthree points behind Pirates with two tough matches remaining against SuperSport United and Free State Stars.

“We can still win the League because if we don’t believe then why are still playing?”

Downs go top!!!

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the top of the Absa Premiership table, when they downed Santos 3-1 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Wayne Sandilands made a return in between the poles for ‘The Brazilians’, while captain fantastic, Teko Modise missed the match as he is still nursing a knock he picked up in the match against Maritzburg United. Veteran Midfielder and Zimbabwean International Esrom Nyandoro captained the side and did so with flying colours.

Nyasha Mushekwi almost broke the deadlock within five minutes of kickoff, when he met Lebohang Mokoena’s well taken corner kick but sent his header slightly wide.

Mokoena and Punch Masenamela were proving to be a handful for the Santos defence on the left flank, with their neat touches which caused all sorts of problems for the visitors.

In the 20th minute the pair combined well to lay the ball back for Hlompo Kekana, who switched play to the right and found Elias Pelembe and the skilful Mozambican drove in a powerful cross which was deflected for an own goal by Santos defender, Pere Ariweriyai to give Sundowns the lead.

A few minutes later Mushekwi almost doubled Sundowns’ lead after connecting well with a cross by Walter Maponyane, who made a spirited run down the right flank.

Pelembe and Mokoena switched sides and Pelembe operated the left side, while Mokoena on the right dished the same devastating pace for the visitors, who were struggling to keep tabs on the speedy player.

Mushekwi was not to be denied for the third time and rose above everyone to slot Sundowns’ second goal in the 38th minute after meeting Mokoena’s well delivered cross.

Nyandoro took the responsibility of being captain in his strides, as he marshalled the midfield like a commander and lead by example in defending and attacking to prove why Coach Neeskens has put so much faith in him.

Sundowns had the lion share of ball possession for most of the first half and the match went into the halftime break with ‘The Brazilians’ leading by two goals.

In the 63rd minute Maponyane hit a long pass from the right to find Cheeseboy, who and the nippy player combined well with Kekana, knitting together a series of beautiful touches before Kekana hit a screamer that left the Santos goalkeeper left for dead, giving ‘Bafana Ba Style’ a 3-0 lead.

In the 68th minute Coach Neeskens made his first substitution of the match and brought in Musa Nyatama for Mokoena, who received a standing ovation from the crowd in attendance as he made his way off the pitch.

Santos pulled one back in the 75th minute through their danger-man Eleazar Rodgers to give the visitors some hope of a comeback.

Coach Neeskens made another change in the 79th minute bringing in Richard Henyekane for Pelembe, who was a headache to deal for the Santos defence.

For most of the second half the visitors struggled to get around the wall of resistance created by Nyandoro and ‘The Rock’ Kekana in the middle of the park, forcing the Cape side to resort to long balls and attacking via the flanks. That did not work too well either for the visitors because the Sundowns defence took no prisoners on the day.

Nyasha made way for Samuel Julies in the in the 87th minute of the match and by then match was done and dusted, resulting in Sundowns going back on top of the Absa Premiership table on goal difference.

Themba Zwane earned himself the man of the match award, with his work rate and overall contribution to the match.
