22 July 2025- A man (37) was sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Postmasburg Regional Court for touching a woman (19) in a sexual manner without her consent. However, the sentenced against the accused, Shahabudinn Halder, was wholly suspended for five years in condition that he is not convicted of sexual assault during the period of suspension.
The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Sam said the victim went to buy electricity at a tuck shop, whereby she was assisted by the accused. Sam said that Halder requested a hug from the victim for which she refused and that resulted in the accused stretching his body over the counter and forcing a hug that made the victim uncomfortable as she pushed him away.
“The victim immediately reported the matter to the police, who registered a case docket. The accused was found guilty of sexual assault. The court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm,” he said.
Meanwhile, the ZF Mgcawu District Police Commissioner, Major General Monica Sebili, applauded the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Gaolatlhe Mongake from the Postmasburg FCS Unit for thorough investigation and presentation of the case. Mongake said the police encourage the public to support crime-fighting efforts by participating in the “Rate Our Service” online survey.
“Community members are also urged to report any criminal activity via the MySAPS App or by contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” he said.
