More 1567 suspects nabbed during Operation Shanela

20 January 2025- More than 1567 suspects were arrested for various crimes ranging from murder, rape, aggravated armed robberies, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and many more others. Moreover, detectives conducted raids to nail wanted suspects for business robbery, murder, rape, assault GBH and house robbery. 

The North West police spokesperson, Captain Mpho Manyoba said in total, 405 suspects were arrested. Manyoba said as part of the operations, 197 premises, 2879 persons and 1244 vehicles were searched. 

“Furthermore, 253 high visibility patrols were conducted including 292 stops and searches. More than 102 second-hand goods dealers and 18 licensed liquor premises were visited for compliance and inspections.  

“The police were focused and able to execute 5901 actions in different crime focus areas. Police visibility was heightened through spontaneous roadblocks, stop and searches and other actions, whereby the authority of the state was once more stamped,” she said.

Meanwhile, the acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, reiterated that police and other law enforcement agencies across the province will continue to squeeze the space for criminals when responding to serious and violent crimes through Operation Shanela, which is focused on enhanced crime prevention and combating.

Asaneng said they welcome the results achieved and urged police to be consistent and dedicated to ensure the safety and security of every citizen in this province.

13 January 2025- More than 1194 suspects were arrested for various offences during Operation Shanela. The suspects were arrested by the police in the North West for working together with other law enforcement agencies and role players.  

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the arrests were executed between 6 until 12 January 2025. Mokgwabone said the suspects were among others, arrested for illicit mining, murder, rape, attempted murder, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm and common and dealing in drugs.

“This includes illegal dealing in liquor, possession of drugs, burglaries at business and residential premises and driving under the influence of alcohol. Moreover, 115 suspected undocumented persons were also taken in for processing by Immigration Officials. 

“Of the total arrests, 614 were effected during detectives’ suspect raiding operations. The arrests include an Angolan national (36), who was arrested in Vryburg on 10 January 2025, for possession of crystal meth,” he said.

Mokgwabone further said a Nigerian national (35), was detained after being found in possession of crystal meth and 91 mandrax tablets. He added that in Lomanyaneng village, outside Mahikeng, the operation which began with a roadblock, led to the shutdown of an illegal Second-Hand Goods Dealership.

“That after information was operationalised that the dealer was operating without a registration certificate. The dealer was as a result, issued with a fine. As part of the operations, 307 premises, 3 888 persons and 1 197 vehicles were searched.

“Moreover, 250 licensed liquor premises and second-hand goods dealers were visited for compliance inspections. The operation further led to the confiscation of liquor, 55 ammunition, five firearms, jewellery, nine cell phones, a variety of drugs and many other items,” said Mokgwabone.

Meanwhile, the acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, lauded the police and other law enforcement officials for their persistent hard work in ensuring the general safety and security of the communities.

13 January 2025- More than 203 suspects were arrested during Operation Shanela in Northern Cape. The suspects were arrested for murder, attempted murder, assault, burglary, illegal dealing in liquor, malicious damage to property and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Sam said this includes robbery, rape, possession of dangerous weapons, dealing in and possession of drugs, illegal immigrants, stock theft and other crimes.

Sam said Operation Shanela, remains steadfast in its objective to reduce contact and violent crimes as schools are gearing up to start the 2025 school year.

“The weekly multi-disciplinary high density operation which commenced on 6 until 12 January 2025, was executed in the five districts as preparations for the reopening of schools started.

“Actions and police activities executed during the operations included vehicle check points (VCPs), stop and searches, foot and vehicle patrols, compliance inspections, drugs and other commodities smuggling,” he said.

Sam further said several vehicle check points (VCPs) and roadblocks were conducted across the province during which a total of 2422 vehicles and 4780 persons were stopped and searched. He added that numerous compliance inspections at second-hand dealers, scrapyards, recyclers, private security, firearm dealers, formal and informal businesses as well as farms were executed.

“The police in Kuruman, while executing crime prevention patrols, received information from the public of a wanted suspect who was seen walking in one of the streets. The police followed up the information and arrested the suspect who was allegedly involved in a case, where a security officer was shot with his own firearm.

“The police also confiscated large volumes of alcoholic beverages, drugs, dangerous weapons, fireworks and cash that is believed to be the proceeds of crime,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, expressed her gratitude to all law enforcement agencies for the collective efforts and actions executed during this period. Otola indicated that the police will promote safer schools’ initiatives during the Back to School Campaigns.

“The police will ensure visibility in and around schools, monitoring the carrying or storage of dangerous objects, and the possession or entry of alcohol or illegal drugs.

“Through robust community participation and support, the police’s actions will be strengthened. We appreciate the public’s efforts in fighting crime together,” she said.

Safer Season Operations To Continue Unabated

6 January 2025- The police in Northern Cape said safer festive season operations will continue unabated. The police said as the festive season celebrations wind down, they will continue to squeeze the space for criminals to operate.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said during week long disruptive actions across all five districts in the province, a total of 230 suspects were arrested for crimes including murder, attempted murder, rape, assault GBH, dealing in drugs, possession of drugs and illegal dealing in liquor.

Ehlers said a zero tolerance approach by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in collaboration with other government departments and law enforcement agencies to address priority crimes resulted in these arrests and confiscation of drugs, alcohol, dangerous weapons and money believed to be the proceeds of crime.

“In Kakamas, two suspects were arrested after dagga with an estimated value of R31 500, was found in their possession. Disruptive actions included roadblocks, vehicle check points, high visibility patrols, and stop and search actions, which resulted in the search of 8 993 persons and 4442 vehicles.

“A total of 13 arrests were executed for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Compliance inspections were conducted at liquor outlets, second-hand goods dealers, scrapyards, and recyclers. This led to the closure of 20 unlicensed liquor outlets,” she said.

Ehlers further said traffic flow is expected to increase as holidaymakers return home. She added that hence, the police urge all motorists to adhere to road traffic rules and to practice road safety at all times.

“Communities are encouraged to share valuable information and to continue aiding the police by reporting incidents via the MySAPS app or 08600 10111,” said Ehlers.

More than 948 suspects arrested for various crimes during Operation Shanela

25 November 2024- More than 948 suspects were arrested for various crimes in the North West during Operation Shanela. The operation was conducted by the police and other law enforcement agencies between 18 until 24 November 2024.

The North West police spokesperson, Colonel Amanda Funani said, the suspects were amongst others, arrested for illicit mining, rape, murder, assault GBH, malicious damage to property, burglary residential and business premises. Funani said these include possession of drugs, theft out of/from motor vehicles and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Out of the 948 arrested suspects, 439 were wanted for contact crimes like murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), assault common, illicit mining, house robbery and business robbery.

“Two hundred and fifty-nine, were arrested during Detectives’ suspect raiding operations. Additionally, 64 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing,” she said.

Funani further said the arrests were effected through execution of several actions, which included stop and searches, roadblocks, patrols, vehicle check points, visiting and inspecting of licensed liquor premises, second-hand goods dealers and many others. 

She added that the operations also culminated in the confiscation of a variety of drugs, dangerous weapons, computers, laptops, counterfeit goods, 9 cell phones, illegal cigarettes, 29 ammunition, four firearms, copper cable, liquor and four vehicles.

“During the operations, 14 illegal liquor outlets or shebeens were shut down. The Operation Shanela continues to yield more positive results,” said Funani.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, congratulated the police and other stakeholders for their continuous support in fighting crime in the province and for making sure that the citizens are protected.

More than 2000 suspects nabbed during operation

11 November 2024 – More than 2570 were arrested for various offences during operations conducted between 4 and 10 November 2024. The North West police said with the focus on stabilising identified crime hotspots in the province and applying a multi-disciplinary approach to prevent and combat serious and violent crimes, police are working together with other law enforcement agencies to curb the crime.

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the alleged offenders were among others, nabbed for crimes ranging from sexual offences, murder, rape, attempted murder, assault with the intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and common.

Mokgwabone said this includes dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, possession of drugs, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, burglaries at business and residential premises, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of gold bearing material to illicit mining.

“During the operations, 301 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing by Immigration Officials. Of the total arrests, 372 suspects were arrested during detectives’ suspect raiding operations.

“As part of actions executed, 203 premises, 2 569 persons and 543 vehicles were searched. In addition, 131 licensed liquor premises, 72 second-hand goods dealers and 29 farms were visited for compliance inspections. The operations also led to the confiscation of 83 ammunition, eight firearms, three vehicles, a variety of drugs and assortments of liquor,” he said.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, lauded all role players for their dedication and stamping the authority of the state to ensure the safety and security of all citizens during this period.

14 October 2024– More than 1000 suspects across North West, were arrested for various offences during Operation Shanela. The police in the province in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies arrested 1 258 suspects between 7 and 13 October 2024.

 The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the suspects were among others, arrested for murder, rape, attempted murder, assault with the intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and common. Mokgwabone said this includes dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, possession of drugs, burglaries at business and residential premises and driving under the influence of alcohol.

“In addition, 81 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing by Immigration Officials. Of the 1 258 arrests, 421 were for wanted and circulated suspects brought to book during detectives’ suspect raiding operations.

“The operations also led to searching of 262 premises, 2 490 persons and 835 vehicles. Moreover, 385 licensed liquor premises and second-hand goods dealers were visited for compliance inspections,” he said.

Mokgwabone said the operation further resulted in the confiscation of liquor, 120 explosives (fireworks), 10 ammunition, five cell phones, 13 dangerous weapons, a variety of drugs and three vehicles.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended the police and other law enforcement officials for their relentless efforts to ensure the safety and security of the communities.

More than 258 suspects were arrested for various crimes during Operation Shanela across the Northern Cape. The suspects were arrested by multi-disciplinary teams in all five districts for crimes such as illegal possession of firearms, dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, robbery, murder, attempted murder, rape, assault and burglary.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said the Detectives traced and arrested 103 wanted suspects for serious crimes, including business robbery, murder, rape and assault GBH.

Ehlers said the multi-disciplinary teams conducted the searching of premises, stop and search actions, high visibility patrols, compliance inspections, roadblocks, and vehicle check points.

“A total of 21 863 persons and 11 436 vehicles were stopped and searched. Twelve unlicensed liquor outlets were closed, and over 2 000 litres of alcohol was confiscated. A considerable amount of drugs, counterfeit goods, and dangerous weapons were seized during the actions.

“Operation Shanela will not relax efforts to combat priority crimes in hotspot areas in order to secure the safety of all inhabitants and essential infrastructures in the Northern Cape,” she said.

Ehlers further said the Operation Shanela said was executed from 17 to 23 June 2024, throughout the Northern Cape to address priority crimes, including illegal firearms, contact crimes, trio crimes and aggravating robbery.

More than 234 suspects nabbed for various crimes during Operation Shanela

More than 234 suspects were arrested connection with serious crimes such as murder, rape, assault GBH and illegal possession of firearms. Out of 234 suspects, 119 were allegedly wanted suspects.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said these wanted suspects were arrested by Detectives. Ehlers said other arrests comprised of dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, possession of drugs, murder, attempted murder, attempted rape, assault and burglary.

“A total of 5503 persons and 2835 vehicles were stopped and searched. Five unlicensed liquor outlets were closed and a significant amount of alcohol was confiscated. A considerable amount of drugs and cash believed to be the proceeds of crime was also seized.

“Operation Shanela disruptive actions will continue relentlessly to ensure that priority crimes are addressed throughout the province. The arrests were executed by the multi-disciplinary teams in all five districts from 27 May until 2 June 2024,” she said.

Ehlers further said these actions included the searching of premises, stop and search actions, high visibility patrols, compliance inspections, roadblocks and vehicle check points. She added that Operation Shanela will not relax efforts to combat crime in hotspot areas and national key points in order to secure the safety of all inhabitants and essential infrastructures in the province.

More than 369 suspects were arrested during Operation Shanela for various crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft out of motor vehicle and illegal possession of firearms.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Timothy Sam said this includes illicit mining, malicious damage to property, dealing and possession of drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as well as undocumented illegal immigrants.

“The suspects were also apprehended for stock theft and illegal possession of ammunition. The actions and police activities executed during the operations included, Vehicle Check Points (VCPs), stop and searches, foot and vehicle patrols, compliance inspections, drugs and other commodities smuggling.

“Several VCPs and roadblocks were conducted across the province during which a total of 3194 vehicles and 5657 persons were stopped and searched. Numerous compliance inspections at secondhand dealers, scrapyards, recyclers, private security, firearm dealers, formal and informal businesses, farms and mines were also executed,” he said.

Sam further said Operation Shanela is a weekly multi-disciplinary high density operation, which commenced on 25-28 January 2024 with a focus on the reduction of contact and violent crimes.

“More than 109 daily wanted suspects were also traced and brought to book for evading court appearances and contravention of court orders.

“The police confiscated large volumes of alcoholic beverages, drugs, non ferrous metal items and cash that is believed to be the proceeds of crime,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, expressed her gratitude to all law enforcement agencies for the collective efforts and actions executed during this period. She commended the community for their support and being whistle-blowers by reporting crime.
