Police probe shooting incidents in Rustenburg

22 January 2025- The police in Sun City have launched investigations following shooting incidents that occurred on Thursday morning, 16 January 2025, at Portion Zero (Tuse Mine), Witrandjie village, near Sun City, outside Rustenburg.

The North West police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh said the reports suggest that employees of two private security companies exchanged fire, which resulted in three men sustaining serious injuries. Myburgh said following the intervention and stabilisation of the situation by Sun City Visible Policing and Rustenburg Public Order Police (POP), firearms that will be subjected to ballistic tests, were seized.

“In addition, two attempted murder charges and three separate cases of malicious damage to property were registered after three vehicles were found with bullet holes.

“The motive of the incident is yet to be established. No one has been arrested and investigations are underway. We would like to indicate that contrary to social media reports, the shooting incidents did not involve the police,” she said.

Myburgh further said members of the community are once again urged to use social media platforms responsibly rather than peddling lies and causing unnecessary panic.

An elderly man sentenced to 20 years for raping a minor

8 November 2024- An elderly man aged 75 was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Bafokeng Sexual Offences Regional Court in Tlhabane, near Rustenburg for rape. On 4 June 2023, the accused, Themba Moya, called Tshwetso Letshaba (15) at around 12pm, to assist him with something in the house at Lethabong Township, outside Rustenburg.

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said on arrival, Moya who is the victim’s neighbour, invited her to his bedroom, where he raped her.  Mokgwabone said the matter was reported to the police and the suspect was arrested.

“Sadly, the victim allegedly killed herself a few weeks after the rape incident,” he said.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded the Investigating Officer, D/Sgt Letshabang Mzinyathi and the state prosecutor, Advocate Dzimema and other role players for working together to secure the conviction.

A dog return home after three days as the owner goes missing

The police in Phokeng request the community’s assistance in locating James Mogotsi Mmolotsane (23), who is residing at Mafenya Rasimone Section in Phokeng, outside Rustenburg. The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said Mmolotsane was last seen by his mother on 12 July 2024, when he left home to buy cigarettes at a local tuckshop with his dog. 

“Three days later, the dog returned, but Mmolotsane never did. A search was conducted around the township and surrounding areas of Phokeng without any success. Furthermore, extensive investigations were done and all leads were followed up with no success.

“At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a mustard jacket and light brown trousers. He is dark in complexion, with a slender build body,1.6m tall and has black hair,” she said.

Myburgh further said anyone with information regarding Mmolotsane’s whereabouts, can contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Johanna Masenya of Phokeng Detectives on (014) 566 1700 or 073 801 7173. She added that those who have information can go to the nearest police station.
