Marikana-Police are investigating a case of murder after a 49 year old man was allegedly shot and killed on Sunday at approximately 20:00 near Wonderkop Sports ground.
“It is alleged that the victim was on his way to work when approached by unknown men who shot him with a firearm in a chest and neck. The suspects allegedly fled the scene with a white Toyota Corolla with Gauteng province registration numbers” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.
The motive of the shooting is unknown and nobody has been arrested.
Preliminary investigation revealed four shots were fired and that the victim is Lonmin employee.
“It cannot be confirmed nor denied at this stage that the shooting is relating to murder cases reported in the area and linked to a suspected rivalry between National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).
Police investigation regarding the matter continues.
