Two striking miners appear in court for assault

Rustenburg-The police have arrested two male suspects aged 29 on Tuesday for attempted murder linked to the ongoing Association of Mineworkers  and Construction Union’s protected strike.

The arrest follows a case of attempted murder that was registered on Monday at Khuseleka shaft 1.

“It is alleged that on the said date a 51-year old male victim was on his way to work when offered a lift by an unknown car with two occupants including the driver” Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said.

Police said upon arrival at the mine, the car allegedly parked near a group of picketing and striking mine employees. The victim was allegedly taken into the group.

“He was allegedly intimidated and forced to walk to the nearby stalls where he was undressed. He was later taken to a dumping site where he was assaulted severely with stones” Ngubane said.

The suspect managed to escape and ran naked towards the shaft where he was rescued by mine security, and he was immediately taken to the mine hospital for medical treatment. The police were informed and the case was registered for investigation.

“The victim sustained serious injuries and even lost two right hand fingers due to the incident” he said.

The suspects were traced and they handed themselves on Tuesday after being aware that the police are looking for them and they were both arrested.

They are expected to appear in Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The striking mine workers are still urged to respect the rule of law and avoid being involved in any criminal acts as the police will deal with them accordingly.-TDN
