The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will commemorate World Rabies Day on Friday, 28th September, by engaging on public education. Dubbed “Stand united; End Rabies”, the public education awareness which will focus on school children, will be done in collaboration with the provincial Department of Health.

This World Rabies Day awareness event will be held in Taung, at Manthe village sports ground.

Learners from high schools in Taung who will form part of the day’s programme, will start the day by participating in a 7 kilometer marathon that will be followed by Rabies awareness talk.

As confirmed by the MEC for Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Desbo Mohono, the basis for rabies prevention is vaccination of pets and avoiding contact with the potentially infected animals.

“This worldwide commemoration and awareness offer the opportunity for all to rally towards working together in guiding children on how to help animals and prevent their exposure to rabies”, says MEC Mohono adding that teaching the children more about rabies will help to eliminate this preventable disease.

The month of September has been declared Rabies month, and the department has since the beginning of this month embarked upon massive awareness and vaccination campaigns at schools, community clinics and community gatherings.
