Kraaipan- The Department of Arts, Culture and Traditional Affairs will on Saturday host an event in celebration of International Museums Day.
The event will be held at the Kraaipan Museum located in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.
Under the theme “Museum Collections Make Connections,” the event is aimed at reviving traditional methods of engagement adopted by museums in order to remain relevant to their stakeholders.
The official International Museums Day has celebrated world-wide on May 18, since 1977.
“As important story tellers of a community’s cultural heritage and collective memory, museums contribute strongly to the development of their society by connecting visitors to different types of collections” departmental spokesperson Shirley Montsho said.
This year’s International Museums Day celebrations will be combined with the launch of the Robert Sobukwe exhibitions.
The exhibition material was loaned to the Province by the Robert Sobukwe Foundation.
“It will be circulated around the North West Museums to allow communities the privilege to view them and learn the history of one of the country’s most respected liberation icons” Montsho said.
The celebration will kick off with the launch and unveiling of the Robert Sobukwe exhibition by MEC Tebogo Modise and will conclude with a tour to heritage sites around Kraaipan village.
Places that will be visited include the Ga Thulo (Rock Art); Mahukubung; Kraaipan Monument and the Anglo Boer War First shooting sites.
