Bafana Bafana midfielder Thulani Serero has been declared fit to train and travel with the team.

South Africa faces Mauritania on Saturday, 5 September in Nouakchott, Mauritania in a CAF Orange Africa Cup of Nations Gabon 2017 qualifier.

Serero was called up for national team duty and his club had said he was recovering from an injury – the Bafana Bafana medical team assessed him this morning and found him ready to be part of the squad.

He trained with his compatriots, completed the session and showed no signs of pain.

The session was moved to Sturrock grounds at Wits after the UJ grounds were found to be waterlogged.

“Serero is fine, pain free and was able to complete the training session so we are happy with the results. He is ready to travel with the team. He had an ankle injury which he was recovering from hence the team sent us the scan and the report that had an injury, but he is good to go after we checked him,” said Bafana Bafana medico Dr Thulani Hlatshwayo.

Serero arrived in camp on Tuesday night alongside Germany-based Daylon Claasen, bringing the number of players in camp to 24. Only Kaizer Chiefs left back Tsepo Masilela hasn’t reported for national team duty after his club informed Bafana Bafana that he was injured.

“We had requested that he also come in for medical assessment, just like Serero, but the status quo with Masilela remains the same from yesterday – he has not yet arrived in camp and the issue has been reported to the Association so they can deal with it administratively because it is now out of our hands. And that’s where we are at the moment,” added Dr Ngwenya.

Mzikayise Mashaba did not finish the session after he was injured at training on his ankle, but he should be fit for the match.

Eric Mathoho, who sat out training on Tuesday as a precaution after he complained of pains on his foot, was back at training and showed no signs of discomfort.

Meanwhile Bafana Bafana have called off the Wednesday afternoon training session to give the players a bit of rest ahead of the trip to Mauritania.

The squad leaves on Thursday, 3 September on a 13h00 flight.

They will have their last training session on Friday at the match venue in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

Bafana Bafana are expected back in the country on Sunday, 6 September at 06h00.

They will then start preparations for the 2015 Nelson Mandela Challenge clash against Senegal which takes place on Tuesday, 8 September at Orlando Stadium. Kick-off is at 19h00.

Kaizer Motaung says he was “blown away” by Steve Komphela’s successful bid for the Kaizer Chiefs job.

Chiefs on Wednesday unveiled Komphela as their new coach on a three-year contract.

The former Maritzburg United mentor replaced Stuart Baxter, who led Amakhosi to a League and MTN8 double this past season prior to joining Turkish side Genclerbirligi.

“Three weeks ago we bid farewell to an extraordinary coach,” Motaung said.

“We got a lot of CVs from all over but mainly from the national team coaches.

“I look at Steve as a coach, not as a black coach. His presentation blew me away.

“I am fully confident, that with the experience he’s gathered over the years, he deserves this platform.

“We welcome him back to the Kaizer Chiefs Village, he was once a player and also an assistant coach.

“The mandate is to continue the Kaizer Chiefs’ legacy of winning.”

The club’s football manager Bobby Motaung added: “We had about 25 to 30 applicants [for the job] … Steve Komphela was tops in terms of the criteria.”

Komphela represented Chiefs in defence during his playing days, while he was an assistant coach to Muhsin Ertugral at Naturena from 2000 to 2002.

The 47-year-old has also had stints in charge of Free State Stars, Platinum Stars and Bafana Bafana (caretaker boss in 2012).

Motaung: There is no ‘Pretoria Soccer League’ now

Despite Kaizer Chiefs no-show in the title challenge, chairman Kaizer Motaung says he is pleased to see the end of the ‘Pretoria Soccer League’.

Either Orlando Pirates or Moroka Swallows will take the League tomorrow, ensuring that the trophy stays in Soweto, and Motaung wishes both teams “all the best”.

Defending champions Pirates are favourites to lift the trophy, as they lead second-placed Swallows by two points going into the final matches.

“I want to wish the two teams which will be fighting for the League on Saturday all the best; I know we are not there,” Motaung says.

“At least the League will remain in Soweto, there is no more that thing of the Pretoria Soccer League now.”

Yeye to miss last match

BY Tiyani Mabasa

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane will miss the club’s last match of the season against AmaZulu on Saturday at the FNB Stadium.

Yeye has just returned from a long lay-off owing to a knee injury and he suffered another setback when he was cautioned against in Chiefs’ 2-1 win over Free State Stars over the weekend.

Letsholonyane received two yellow cards earlier in the season and his booking against Stars was his third of the campaign, which culminated in the suspension.

Also sitting out the clash against AmaZulu is Tefu Mashamaite, who will also be serving a one-match suspension.

However, Chiefs will welcome back Lucky Baloyi who missed the trip to the Free State also due to suspension.

Back from an injury, Kaizer Chiefs skilful midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane made a grand comeback to Naturena with an impressive performance against Mamelodi Sundowns last night.

He had kind words for his Kaizer Chiefs teammates and technical staff for the support during his long layoff. ‘Yeye’ was injured during a Bafana Bafana camp early this year.

“We worked very hard in training and we were unfortunate to have lost our previous games and in our match today the hard work finally paid off.

“I am happy to have received the man of the match award today as it is a huge confidence booster moving going into the future.

Frustrating time on the sidelines

“The doctors gave me a rough estimate about the duration of my injury which was originally end of the 2011/12 season. Through God’s will, power and doctors help I was able to return much sooner and hopefully help my team reach greater heights with these remaining three games, “he added boldly.

“It’s never easy to watch your teammates struggling and battling to collect points, because at the end of the day it also affects all of us especially our supporters.

Fitness levels

“Every day I am working twice as hard to get to regain my full fitness, but it is still early to push myself to much as I have just returned.

The Soweto born player concluded. “Watching my players train motivates me to work harder and to recover faster and the three points today against Sundowns was an excellent gift.
