SA U15 Boys and Girls teams prepare to make their mark on the continent

24 April 2025 – The South African U15 Boys and Girls teams that will represent the country at the CAF African Schools Football Championship this month were given a special send-off at the Jabulile Secondary School in Orange Farm, Johannesburg, on Thursday. The tournament was staged in Accra, Ghana, from 21 – 26 April 2025 and the South African teams travelled to the West African country on 19 April 2025.

The send-off function was attended by representatives from the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, the Department of Basic Education, Gauteng and Free State Provincial government officials, the South African Football Association (SAFA) and SAFA Schools Football.

SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan wished the teams well ahead of the tournament and reiterated that schools remain the basic basis of all South African football teams.

“We start there in the schools. We wish the players, technical teams and officials well ahead of this assignment in Accra and they have our support,” said Jordaan.

Meanwhile, the SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao thanked Jabulile Secondary School for hosting the send-off function and said she hoped the event inspires the learners in the school to elevate to greatness and rise to the South African U17, U20, U23, Banyana Banyana and Bafana Bafana teams.

“We thank the Gauteng Provincial Government for their unwavering support in our various football activities, the Department of Sport, Arts & Culture and the Department of Education. Without your support we would not have access to the pool of talented players in our various schools, and also ensure that they participate in sport.

“Sport, in particular football, changed my life. It teaches life skills, values and builds lifelong camaraderie. Let’s remember that the late President Tata Nelson Mandela said, ‘Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does,” said Monyepao.

U15 girls coach Ntombifuthi Khumalo said: “It is challenging because we are the champions and we have to defend the cup. What I did as a coach and my technical team, and the support from the Department of Sport, Arts & Culture, the Department of Education and the Federation SAFA is to give a chance to a child who deserves it, who has the talent to be a part of this team.”

The U15 Boys’ team will be looking to make history by lifting their first continental trophy.

SA U15 Boys coach Selekedi Mogale: “It will be history for them and it will be very exciting, it will be a good benchmark for South African football, although it’s not the end or the beginning of their journey. The U15 level gives us this great opportunity to play against other countries at continental level. But we all know that if we can carry through the results right up to Bafana Bafana, it will be such an honour and great pride.”

Plans to confront water challenges

By OBAKENG MAJE

1 March 2025- The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Penny Majodina said they will continue to confront water supply challenges, whenever they rear their ugly heads. Majodina said this during the launch of National Water Month in Eikenhof, Johannesburg, Gauteng.

She further said the National Water Month is commemorated annually in South Africa during the month of March. Majodina added that, it is South Africa’s expansion of World Water Day, which is observed on 22 March and focuses its attention on the importance of fresh water and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

“National Water Month is a moment to reflect on water supply challenges, strides we have made together to expand access to water, and the long road that we still need to traverse. The department and its partners reaffirm their unwavering commitment to addressing the pressing water challenges faced by communities across South Africa.

“Anchored around World Water Day observed annually on 22 March, this critical period highlights the urgent need to tackle water scarcity, improve infrastructure, and ensure equitable access to clean water and sanitation for all,” she said.

Majodina said the National Water Month programme is particularly significant as it aligns with Human Rights Month and International Women’s Day, underscoring the critical role of water as a fundamental human right and its disproportionate impact on women, who often bear the brunt of water scarcity. She said water is the foundation of life, essential for human survival, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

“Yet, millions of South Africans continue to face challenges in accessing clean water and safe sanitation. The government has elevated water to the top of its agenda, recognising that universal access to water and sanitation is not only a moral imperative, but also a prerequisite for sustainable development.

“It is befitting and symbolic that we are hosting this event in Eikenhof, Johannesburg. The City of Johannesburg and other parts of the province and country have experienced water supply disruptions,” said Majodina.

She said through the January 8 Statement and the State of the Nation Address (SONA), water has been elevated to one of the apex national priorities. Majodina said as a department and the water sector in general, they are determined to respond practically to this clarion call by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“We welcome the announcement that the government will spend over R940 billion on infrastructure over the next three years to revitalise roads and bridges, build dams and waterways, modernise our ports and airports and power our economy. In response, our department is identifying key unfunded projects (both national water resource infrastructure and water services infrastructure) to be considered for funding by the Treasury.

“This will put the department in a good position to gain access to the R100 billion mentioned by Rampahosa. We are developing innovative ways of funding infrastructure,” she said.

Majodina said they are engaging local and international financial institutions and investors to unlock R100 billion in infrastructure financing. She said to date, the Infrastructure Fund has secured R23 billion for seven large water infrastructure projects.

“We are taking a series of decisive actions to resolve the water crisis, to enable our people to get water where they live, whether in townships or rural areas. Starting this year, we will work with our municipalities to establish professionally managed, ring-fenced utilities for water and electricity services to ensure that there is adequate investment and maintenance,” said Majodina.

Rustenburg learner amongst country’s top achievers

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

13 January 2025- Determination has paid off for a Rustenburg-based Grade 12 learner, Thobeka Langa (17). Despite coming from a financially poor background, without parental support, Langa was among the country’s 2024 matric top achievers, who were honoured by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube during a Ministerial Breakfast held in Randburg, Johannesburg, on Monday.

She said this has proven that determination and hard work can change one’s outcomes.

The 39 top achievers were honoured ahead of the announcement of the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results, which takes place later today.

Speaking to SAnews on the sidelines of the event, Langa admitted that she was not expecting to be among the top achievers, especially after a challenging Physics exam.

“It has been a really rough journey, and after writing that Physics Paper, I really thought that all my chances of coming here were shattered, but God had other plans.

“As a social grant beneficiary, I will be studying Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria. My dream is to be among those who make an impact in the world,” she said.

Langa emphasised the importance of education as a means of opening up doors to a brighter future. She further said as SASSA [South African Social Security Agency] grant beneficiaries, they are often undermined.

“Having grown up without both parents, I really thought that I would not become anything, but here I am now. This is confirmation, clarification, fulfilment, and coming to an end of a marathon.

“After completing my studies, I will be a qualified engineer, probably specialising somewhere. Maybe I will still be in South Africa or abroad. Who knows?” said Langa.

Another top achiever, Nqubeko Bekwa from Emzamweni High School in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, said he could not believe that he was among the top students.

The 19-year-old, who will be pursuing his Actuarial Science studies at the University of Cape Town, maintained that in life, there are no miracles, but “one must push hard, have a vision and be disciplined” in order to see positive results.

“You must work hard, even though you feel tired and sleepy. I could not sleep at night because I wanted to be here, and once you change your mind set, everything just happens without any struggle,” Bekwa said.

According to the Department of Social Development, out of 882 336 registered learners who sat for the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, 697 502 are social grant beneficiaries, representing 79% of registered learners.

“Out of this number, 1 068 of the learners were children who were in conflict with the law during their schooling years,” the department said in a statement.

Gwarube and Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule will announce the NSC results for the class of 2024 in Johannesburg at 6pm. – SAnews.gov.za

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

Two people aged 35 and 52 were arrested by the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team in Soweto, Johannesburg, for alleged fraud. North West University alumni honoured as Emerging Psychologist of the Year

By REGINALD KANYANE

The North West University (NWU) alumnus, Marelie Botha, was recently honoured as the Emerging Psychologist of the Year at the Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology of South Africa (SIOPSA) Presidential Merit Awards held at the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg.

SIOPSA is a member-based, Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) established to enhance the industrial and organisational psychology profession in South Africa. These awards are held annually in recognition and celebration of excellence in industrial and organisational psychology.

This accolade stands as a testament to Botha’s exceptional contributions to the field of industrial psychology. She said receiving the award was a tremendous honour and represents the collective hard work of those dedicated to driving change.

“Receiving the award is a testament to my efforts in advancing the field of industrial psychology. Professionally, it validates the contributions I strive to make within the industry.

“Personally, it is a recognition of the perseverance and dedication required to overcome the numerous challenges in this field, and it motivates me to continue striving for excellence,” said Botha.

Botha’s journey has been characterised by perseverance, hard work, and a tireless commitment to advancing the field of industrial psychology. Throughout her career, she has been a champion of addressing key challenges faced by emerging industrial-organisational psychologists.

Her efforts, alongside like-minded individuals, led to the establishment of an interest group aimed at tackling issues such as unclear registration processes and limited internship opportunities. She said this collaborative initiative has fostered a more supportive environment for emerging professionals in the field.

Botha has carved a path of success through sheer determination. Her dedication to the industry is further reflected in her role as the chairperson of the Assessment Centre Study Group, chairperson and EXCO member at SIOPSA, and Project Manager of the SIOPSA Learning Academy.

“I was influenced by my family’s deep roots in psychology, with my grandfather and mother being renowned industrial psychologists, so my career path in this field was a natural progression.

“My dedication and hard work eventually led to the establishment of Inpsyght Consulting, a thriving business specialising in talent management solutions and workplace counselling,” she said.

Botha grew up in Vanderbijlpark and completed her undergraduate, honours, and master’s degrees at the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus. During her studies, she sought opportunities to job shadow and assist industrial psychologists in administrative tasks.

During her master’s studies, she worked as a psychometrist and began her journey as an industrial psychology intern.

“The path to registration in our field is tough, so I took over my mom’s consultancy and turned it into a successful business specialising in talent management and workplace counselling. It was a challenging journey, working around 17-18 hours a day, but it all paid off in the end.

“Building a robust professional network, staying up-to-date with industry advancements, seeking mentorship, and fostering a supportive environment are crucial for success. Additionally, maintaining resilience and adaptability is key, as the journey to becoming a registered industrial psychologist can be demanding but immensely rewarding,” said Botha.

She counsels aspiring industrial psychologists to prioritise continual learning and evidence-based practices.
