Robbers held after chase

Four robbery suspects were arrested after a high speed chase and a shootout with an off-duty police officer, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

“The high speed chase and a shoot-out with an off-duty member of the Hawks resulted in the arrest of four suspects on Saturday after their vehicle flipped into a ditch and exploded in Randburg,” said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

He said one of the suspects was shot and wounded and was under police guard at a hospital. The fifth suspect escaped and police were looking for him.

“The police officer became suspicious when he saw five men loading goods at a house in Monument, Krugersdorp and suspected that they might have broken into the house.”

The suspects confronted him and one of them pulled out a firearm, said Dlamini.

“He also pulled out a firearm and fired shots. A shoot-out then ensued and he followed them along the N14.”

The driver lost control after turning into Malibongwe Drive and the vehicle flipped and rolled, he said.

“The vehicle had been fitted with false number plates. It was stolen in Kempton Park recently.”

All the stolen goods including laptops and a TV valued around R60,000 were destroyed when the vehicle caught fire.

The men will appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of housebreaking, theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and attempted murder. – Sapa
