21 October 2024- As part of the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme-Thuntsha Lerole Reloaded, the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, embarked on an operational and capacity assessment of the Sun City and Mogwase Police Stations in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality.
On behalf of the governance cluster, the North West MEC for Treasury, Kenetswe Mosenogi was joined by the Community Safety and Transport Management Head of Department, Dr Hans Kekana and the Chief Director for District Development Model, Mike Keetile on the oversight visit.
Amongst issues hindering the ability of the Sun City Police Station from optimal service delivery, is the worn out building, which poses health risks to officials and the public. Mosenogi said there is a need to look at alternative measures regarding the occupation of police officials as an interim solution, while processes of relocation are being accelerated.
“The safety of officials and the public is a concern at this point. We believe it is urgent to address issues of the building, which is putting the lives of police members at risk.
“At this point, we need to seek alternative solutions to address the challenge. It would also require the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Public Works and Roads, Provincial Treasury, to come together and see how best we can intervene with a sustainable solution,” she said.
The Mogwase Police Station currently services over 30 surrounding villages. A problematic crime trend for the station is domestic violence, mostly associated with liquor consumption.
Meanwhile, the North West Community Safety and Transport Management, Head of Department, Dr Hans Kekana said there is a need to escalate anti Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) campaigns in the area.
“Recently, we embarked on a crime imbizo in the community of Lerome village, with a stern focus on GBVF. The aim was to raise awareness on the dangers of violence against women, children and the elderly.
“We believe that there is a need to escalate and spread implementation of the campaigns to make a greater impact in the lives of our people,” said Kekana.
