Maritzburg United advanced to the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals after edging Platinum Stars 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Moruleng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Bhongolwethu Jayiya, Robyn Johannes and Heinrich Isaacks converted their penalties, to save the potential blushes of Mario Booysen, who failed to do so.

Stars captain Vuyo Mere slotted his effort from the spot, but his teammates Henrico Botes, Solomon Mathe and Sibusiso Msomi were unsuccessful with their attempts.
