A learner dies after allegedly consuming suspected poisoned snacks

15 April 2025- A learner from Podile Primary School in Ramosadi village, near Mahikeng, died after suspected food poisoning. On 11 April 2025, two learners, who are siblings, Ogone (8) and Gofaone Sedupelele (10), were ferried to a clinic in Montshioa Township, near Mahikeng, after allegedly consuming snacks they bought from a street hawker. 

It is alleged that, a Grade 3 learner, Ogone died on 12 April 2025, while her sister, Gofaone was ferried to the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital for medical attention. The Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) from Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality was allegedly summoned to the scene, where the snacks were bought. 

According to information, the inspection was conducted at the house, where the snacks were packaged. The bucket containing the snacks was seized so that samples can be taken to the forensic laboratory. 

Meanwhile, the North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi is set to visit the family of the deceased at Extension 38 on Wednesday. Motsumi’s visit is aimed at offering support to the bereaved family and school community during this difficult time.
