1241 suspects nabbed during Operation Shanela 2

2 September 2025 – The police in the North West have during the weekly High Density Operation Shanela 2 operations, arrested 1241 suspects for a variety of crimes ranging from burglaries at residential and non-residential premises, aggravated robberies, murders, rapes, dealing in and possession of drugs, driving under the influence of liquor, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The police said this includes illicit mining among others.

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said operations were conducted between 25 and 31 August 2025, in all five districts. Mokgwabone said out of the 1241 arrested suspects, it is worth noting that 460 were arrested by the Detectives as those on the circulated wanted suspects’ lists and 20 illegal immigrants were arrested for being in the country in contravention of the Immigration Act.

“As part of the operations, the police addressed identified crime generators through Joint law enforcement compliance inspections to enforce the provisions of the Liquor and Second-Hand Goods Acts.

“As a result, 13 unlicensed liquor outlets (shebeens) were closed, and large quantities of liquor were confiscated,” he said.

Mokgwabone further said in addition, the operations led to the confiscation of 25 cell phones, copper cables, seven firearms, 303 rounds of ammunition, precious metals and tobacco products. He added that in the Bojanala Platinum District, a disruptive illegal mining operation by Vala Umgodi team, Rustenburg based Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) and Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, at Bapong Illegal Mining Site, near R556, Mooinooi on 28 August 2025, led to the confiscation an abandoned excavator, two generators, four jack hammers, drill bits and electric cords, which are used for illegal mining.

Meanwhile, the acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, said that as the country and the province prepare for the start of the normally hectic festive season, the intensified South African Police Service led high density integrated Operation Shanela is relentlessly tracking, apprehending, and locking no less than 1000 wanted suspects every week.  Asaneng aid among the arrested suspects are the province’s circulated wanted, dangerous repeat offenders whose reign of terror has been nipped in the bud.

Eight suspects nabbed for dealing in drugs

10 March 2025- Eight suspects aged between 27 and 42, were arrested contravention of the Immigration Act, dealing in and possession of drugs, resisting arrest, assault on a police official, defeating the ends of justice and robbery with a weapon. The suspects were arrested during Northern Cape multi-disciplinary Operation Vala Umgodi team, tasked to combat illicit mining activities.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Sam said the operation was executed from 6 March 2025, in the Frances Baard and Namakwa Districts, respectively. Sam said the police from the Kimberley and Kleinsee Venue Operations Centres (VOC), executed disruptive activities, including vehicle check points (VCPs), stop and searches, as well as crime prevention patrols in and around the mining areas and communities.

“Shift B of the Kimberley VOC while patrolling,& received information of drug dealing at a house in Galeshewe, Ramatshela Street. They verified and operationalised the information and found Mandrax tablets, Crystal Meth and Khat, with a total value of approximately R3180, as well as R8 780 cash that is believed to be the proceeds of crime.

“The team further arrested 3 assailants who robbed a member of the public not far from were they searched the drug house. All suspects will appear in their respective Courts of Kimberley and Port Nolloth soon,” he said.

Sam further said numerous traffic violation fines were issued at several VCPs in Frances Baard and Namakwa. He added that, the combat teams will intensify its efforts by squeezing the space for illegal miners to operate.

More than 203 suspects nabbed during Operation Shanela

13 January 2025- More than 203 suspects were arrested during Operation Shanela in Northern Cape. The suspects were arrested for murder, attempted murder, assault, burglary, illegal dealing in liquor, malicious damage to property and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Sam said this includes robbery, rape, possession of dangerous weapons, dealing in and possession of drugs, illegal immigrants, stock theft and other crimes.

Sam said Operation Shanela, remains steadfast in its objective to reduce contact and violent crimes as schools are gearing up to start the 2025 school year.

“The weekly multi-disciplinary high density operation which commenced on 6 until 12 January 2025, was executed in the five districts as preparations for the reopening of schools started.

“Actions and police activities executed during the operations included vehicle check points (VCPs), stop and searches, foot and vehicle patrols, compliance inspections, drugs and other commodities smuggling,” he said.

Sam further said several vehicle check points (VCPs) and roadblocks were conducted across the province during which a total of 2422 vehicles and 4780 persons were stopped and searched. He added that numerous compliance inspections at second-hand dealers, scrapyards, recyclers, private security, firearm dealers, formal and informal businesses as well as farms were executed.

“The police in Kuruman, while executing crime prevention patrols, received information from the public of a wanted suspect who was seen walking in one of the streets. The police followed up the information and arrested the suspect who was allegedly involved in a case, where a security officer was shot with his own firearm.

“The police also confiscated large volumes of alcoholic beverages, drugs, dangerous weapons, fireworks and cash that is believed to be the proceeds of crime,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, expressed her gratitude to all law enforcement agencies for the collective efforts and actions executed during this period. Otola indicated that the police will promote safer schools’ initiatives during the Back to School Campaigns.

“The police will ensure visibility in and around schools, monitoring the carrying or storage of dangerous objects, and the possession or entry of alcohol or illegal drugs.

“Through robust community participation and support, the police’s actions will be strengthened. We appreciate the public’s efforts in fighting crime together,” she said.
